Remember, Actors Change Appearance for Roles – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr.Rassman,

I did read your Mel-Gibson story. Please remember that especially actors does a lot of changes in their appearance.

Take Al Pacino. His hair was thinned out for his role in Godfather due to his characters age.

Here’s a snippet from the DVD cover of the Godfather Part III, showing Al Pacino’s aged look that you mentioned.

When a role requires an actor to look older in the theater or on film, stylists (or the actors themselves, perhaps) tend to gray the hair and might even put some balding or thinning appearance to the hair. When the role seeks a younger look, they add more hair and reverse the balding. That is the natural course for the aging man, because half of the male population will have some degree of balding by the time they reach their mid-40s.

Pinker Scalp Pigment Under White Hairs in 18 Year Old – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m 18, and last year i started getting a spot of white hairs on my head. The skin on this spot is pinker then the rest of my skelp. Also I think the white hairs are falling out in this area. Is their anything that i can to to help thinkin this area?

These are genetic pigmentation spots that occur in some people. These areas are also subject to genetic balding if the rest of the hair has pattern balding (in some people), so I would make the same suggestions I always make — get your hair mapped out for miniaturization and find out if you are really losing hair in the white spot area, as well as other areas around your head.

A Second Hair Transplant Surgery – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr. Rassman;

Second Surgery.
How long should one wait for a second hair transplant procedure? I’ve read some articles of men who have had a second surgery only six months after the first and a third only within six months after the second. Is this correct? I had my first surgery 7 months ago and I’m still seeing new little hairs coming up where there were no hairs before. I had to look at my 2 days post op pictures to realize that these are transplanted hairs. So if I’m still getting new hairs coming in after 7 months how can a Doctor suggest to a patient to get a second procedure after only 6 months?

Again thank you for your honesty and for answering our questions.

Kind Regards.

You are absolutely correct. I generally tell my patients that 8 months is the minimum waiting time between hair transplant procedures, because as you suggested, more hair is still growing in until that time. By 8 months, you can generally expect 80-90% of the growth and by 1 year, 95+% of the growth.

There is usually a big difference between the first procedure and the second procedure. In the first procedure, the doctor will make most of the decisions with the patient’s guidance. In the follow-up surgery, the patient makes most of the decisions, because now the patient understands that value of the new hair, particularly with regard to hair and graft distribution.

14 Year Old with Bald Spots – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 14 years of age. I don’t know how many bald spots I have, but when my hair is wet, I notice quite a lot, especially on the spots where I gel my hair. When I gel my hair, I do notice hairs in the comb. You said it should grow back, but I’ve been waiting 6 months to a year, and no signs of regrowth. How long should it take? Is this normal?

Oh, yeah. 1 more thing. My cousin hit me with a baseball bat, and then there was a bump where I got hit. After my mom put some green oil (it’s an Asian thing, not sure what it’s called). Now there’s a bald spot there. Will it grow back?

These bald spots need to be evaluated by a good dermatologist. A fungal infection is the most common cause of such spots and there are other medical conditions that need to be evaluated as well. You don’t want to be your own doctor here.

The traumatic baseball bat type of injury has been know to produce temporary hair loss at the point of impact. It should grow back in under 6 months.

Hair Loss InformationTreatments Available for Female Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Over the over again, women from all over the world are writing to me asking, “What can be done for me?” I will list alternative options below, but I want to warn those of you who are reading this material to recognize that none of this is proven to solve the hair loss problems of most women. If it works, it may work in selective women, those that have a more clear androgenic (male-like) component of their hair loss. In addition, some women with combined genetic hair loss and Polycystic Ovaries (PCO) develop male-like patterned hair loss and could be candidates for the hormone treatments discussed below. I am loathe to recommend these treatments, because I do not personally feel comfortable with recommending hormone altering therapies, as some of them may impact ovarian, breast, and uterine cancer risks — so with that warning, please read on.

Finasteride use in women:
There have been articles on the failure of 1mg of finasteride to impact women’s hair loss. Now, for the use of higher dose finasteride than normally prescribed in men, the Iorizzo article (see references below) concludes, Sixty-two percent of the patients demonstrated some improvement of their hair loss with the use of finasteride, 2.5 mg/d, while taking the oral contraceptive. It is unclear whether the success was due to a higher dosage of finasteride (2.5 mg instead of 1 mg) or to its association with the oral contraceptive containing drospirenone, which has an antiandrogenic effect. These two drugs may complement each other and to get the effect, they both may be needed. Further studies are necessary to understand which patterns of female pattern hair loss respond better to this treatment, for I am sure that all women will not respond the same way. The article leaves us confused. It is not clear which are those who can be treated and there are no statistics on safety and side effects (this was not the focus of the article, however). The entire article is based upon conjecture, something that the authors recognize is the problem that the limited study creates. What concerns me is that with the promise that 62% of women may be helped by Propecia, desperate women with the help of inexperienced doctors will start taking finasteride without understanding the long term impact of these drugs on women. Maybe downstream, we may see a Vioxx type side effect with regard to cancer. With that said, there is a suggestion in this article that finasteride may have value for women and if this can be seen with better, more controlled studies, then this may be a breakthrough. I suspect that women with a ‘male pattern’ to their hair loss may experience more benefit over those without it. This is conjecture (an educated guess) on my part.

Antiandrogen treatment for hair loss in women:
The second article (see references below) starts off, “It has not been conclusively established that female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is either due to androgens or responsive to oral antiandrogen therapy.” This opening correctly set the tone of the article. Two different medications were used: spironolactone and cyproterone acetate. Neither was clearly better than the other. Discussion of the authors said, “The treatment under a doctor’s care went for 16 months. 44% had improvement, 44% had no improvement and 10% had further hair loss“. Many dermatologist are presently using spironolactone and cyproterone acetate and there is selective enthusiasm for these drugs, but it is not universally accepted as the mainstay for treating women’s hair loss. Doctors come under a great deal of pressure to do something. The question here is will spironolactone and cyproterone acetate treatment provide enough benefit for the costs and the pain of the injections that are required with repetitive treatments over a prolonged period of time?

Staph Infection Causing Hair Loss? – Balding Blog

I have a 15 yr. old daughter about 9 mths. ago her hair started falling out. I thought it was a perm. It came out around the sides and back. I have taken her to different daughters and I have no results yet. She have risens alot this time she have two in her had this is the first time she ever had a risen in her head. One dermatologist treated the risen saying she had a steph infection. How this happen I dont know but could this be why her hair has fallen out and just want grow back I am very stressed over this please help us. Thank you so much

Infections can cause hair loss. Your email is not clear for me to understand what you are really asking. I would suggest that you ask your dermatologist, who seems to understand what is happening. Get the doctor to explain it to you. A good patient-doctor (or in your case, parent-doctor) relationship is important and can be very helpful in getting all of your questions answered by the person that is treating your daughter.

Nourkrin, Hair Loss and Hair Regrowth? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Iam a young 50 year old female apart from my hair, which really depresses me. For the last 4 months I have been using Follicle Nutrient Supplement, but it doesn’t appear to be making any difference. I have been to the doctor who suggested Regaine, but I have read about Nourkin and wondered what you thought on this. I will try anything.

I have written much about naturopathic medications that have no science behind them. Their claims are:

  1. Natural protein and mineral food supplement.
  2. Clinically proven to reduce thinning hair (proven by whom and where is the proof?)
  3. Improves the strength of existing hair and promotes the growth of new hair. (Can the hair lift weights that prove it is stronger? Where did the company prove that there is growth of new hair and on who?)

The Nourkrin site claims, “The key ingredient in Nourkrin is a protein compound of marine extracts. This is blended with an organic, soluble silica and vitamin C, making a unique hair recovery programme.

Ugh.

Enough on this product. There are so many of these types of products that just have no scientific proof to back up their statements, and the makers prey on those like you that will try anything. I hate to be so bold, but you need to be smarter about this and stop chasing these products that may not work. Get your hair evaluated by a medical doctor. Women with hair loss often have a medical condition causing it.

Miniaturization Mapping After Taking Propecia for 3 Months – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 39 yrs old male and have been taking propecia for 3 months and 2 weeks (no effect so far). I have been to two doctors in Canada and none of them mapped me for miniaturization (they just prescribed propecia). My question is can I still get mapped for miniaturization or will the 3.5 months of propecia use affect the results. Also, do you know of any doctor in Canada (Toronto) who does miniaturization mapping. You are too far away or I would like to come to you.

Thaknk You and please help out.

Show your doctors the piece on miniaturization that I wrote, Miniaturization: Critical to the Master Plan for Hair Loss. They should easily be able to do what I described. Sometimes, a little push and education from a patient to the doctors goes a long way.

Keeping Hair Past the Age of 30 – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr. Rassman,

I read a while ago that if a male keeps most of his hair by the time he is thirty, he probably won’t go completely bald. It has something to do with testosterone levels. Is this true? If so, is it also true for individuals who keep theie hair by the use of Propecia or Minoxidil?

If you have not lost any hair or have any miniaturization of the hairs on your head by the time you are 30, then it is most probable that you will not lose it. The drugs you mentioned only slow down or reverse hair loss and they will not impact hair that is normal. Hair loss has more to do with DHT than testosterone, but if there is more testosterone, then there could be more DHT. Drugs like Propecia (finasteride), block the effect of DHT and it is the DHT that causes balding when the defective genes are in the person.
