thank you

We are all unique individuals and you may just have a higher hairline than others. If you send me photos of your face from the eyebrows up, I will give you an opinion about your hairline. Please take at least 2 pictures — one with your eyebrows lifted up as you look up, and the other with your eyes looking down.

Losing Hair from Illness – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

When you lose hair due to illness, do you lose hair from all over your scalp or just on top? Is the location of the hair loss different than it would be with genetic factors?

Block Quote

Stress such as an illness can produce hair loss. This is explained because illness requires that your body conserves its resources to fight off the illness. Hair is a high metabolic organ, consuming considerable amounts of nutrients, blood supply, cardiac output, etc.. The body diverts is support activities and abandons those organ systems of low importance. Hair qualifies for that sacrifice. I might expect hair loss to be a generalized loss over your entire scalp, possibly including some body hair as well. That being said, the illness or the stress may have set off a genetic “switch” that probably kick started male pattern hair loss process when the gene is carried by the patient.

I Had 3 Procedures – Did I Receive Optimal Care? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Thank you for sharing your time and expertise with the hair loss community. I’ve had three successful transplants with a prominent hair transplant surgeon between the years of 2003-2005. The graph count of all three sessions was approximately 5,200. Lately I’ve noticed hair transplant sites lauding the success of a few doctors who are able to surpass 5,000 graphs in one session. Surely I would have preferred to receive my 5,000 graphs in one session as compared to three. Did I receive optimal care by my physican or did he lack the skill, resources, and know-how to produce the results (5,000 graphs)in one session? Or, are there factors that make it necessary for a person to have three smaller sessions as compared to one larger one? I’m a 48 year old male. Thanks again!

Block Quote

Sometimes large sessions (5000+) may not be possible on some patients when the size of the bald area is small. If the size of the bald area is large, to get a large session you need three things:

  1. good laxity (looseness) of the donor scalp
  2. very good densities in the donor area
  3. a specialized surgical team capable of doing this work in less than 8 hours

You should always have a good, trusting relationship with your doctor. I cannot comment on optimal care and would not suggest that you received less than optimal care. Maybe your surgeon’s team is not capable of performing these large sessions in the ascribed time period. Maybe your scalp is too tight or your balding area is too small. If you describe your surgery to be a success and are pleased with the results, then that is the determinant for the quality you recieved and I would go by the results you obtained when compared to the expectations you had prior to starting the process.

Some doctors seem to make up terms that do nothing but confuse the public with marketing mumbo jumbo. With your confusion, this sounds like such a case. I did search for the term using Google and found the description for the “Pinpoint” technique appears to be follicular unit transplantation, of which I wrote a published classic article on the subject over a decade ago. Based on the limited text available on the doctor’s site, I don’t see anything different, new, or innovative about this technique.

Artichokes and Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My Grandmother told me that in Sicily where she grew up it’s widely held that artichokes cause hair loss. I’m not sure what to make of this. Any thoughts?

Block Quote

ArtichokesThere is no connection between artichokes and hair loss that I know of. Sometimes I laugh at myself as I put in some quick research to be sure that there are no connections between hair loss and the variables presented to me on this blog time after time. Every once in a while, I am surprised that I actually find an informative connection that makes me wiser and more humble.

Hair Length – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello,
My hair is not thinning, however, it just won’t grow. I’ve had the same length for most of my 52 years. Can’t even get it to shoulder length. The back will grow very slowly but the sides and the front just won’t move. My sisters and daughters all have hair that grows like a weed. Is this a vitimin deficiency?

Block Quote

It is possibly a vitamin deficiency if your diet is poor, but it sounds more like a short hair cycle. When you say the hair is not growing, I believe that you are saying that the hair stays the same length. It is almost certainly growing, just growing very short so that the hair cycle is very short. Hair, as regular readers of this site should know, goes into telogen usually 3+ years after it starts to grow, but in your case, the cycle may be very short (only months). The way to confirm this is to mark a few hairs with some color (use an indelible marker). If I am correct, the marked hair will just disappear when the hair is cycled. Of course, it will be replaced by a new hair that will grow from the scalp at about the same time and it will grow until it reaches the maximal length, which is you is very short.

Proper Xandrox Dosage? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My question is about side effects of using xandrox lotion.and also I donot know if i use 5% or 12.5%.I will be thakful if you answer me.

Block Quote

This medication appears to be a combination of minoxidil and an acid which is supposed to potentiate the absorption of the minoxidil. I would assume that the side effects would be itching of the scalp (it is an acid, which does burn the skin), dizziness (minoxidil may drop your blood pressure), allergic reactions, etc.

Look up the posted side effects from the drug manufacturer and know what you are getting yourself into.

Is Thinner Hair in the Crown Normal? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’m a 29-year-old male with an extremely thick head of hair…may not sound like a problem but I’ve noticed that it is somewhat (not much, but noticeable to the feel) thinner in the crown area. I still have full coverage however, but I’m just wondering if this is something to keep an eye on or if it is natural of most people’s heads and nothing to worry about.

Block Quote

Some people develop crown thinning leading to crown hair loss (which is what I had). Get your scalp mapped out for miniaturization to determine if you have genetic thinning of the crown and if you do, drugs like Propecia (in its early stages) can completely reverse the process and maintain a reversal for years and years in some people.

Vitamin A and Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have heard that too much vitamin A can cause hair loss, is this true? My multi-vitamin contains 100%DV and I recently found out that a medium sweet potato has over 400%DV. There are other items in my diet as well with small amounts of vitamin A.

Block Quote

Too much of a good thing can be bad, and yes, getting too much Vitamin A can produce hair loss. But, I doubt natural foods such as sweet potato can cause you to lose your hair, nor any ordinary supplements with Vitamin A in it.

Propecia and Testosterone Booster – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

is it ok to take propecia with a testosterone booster? and will i still lose my hair like crazy if i already am losing my hair?

Block Quote

Propecia is not 100% capable of undoing the hair loss effects of testosterone. It may have some protective effect against the testosterone (in hair loss), but better just to not take the testosterone and you will not have to protect yourself against something that you are not taking. I hope this is as obvious to you as it is to me.
