I have recently noticed in my moustache i have 2 very very small spots which are missing hair. it’s very random but i did use an expired facial cleanser with Benzoyl peroxide. could this have caused it? will hair grow back? can i rub minoxidil for it grow back?

I doubt expired pimple medicine has cause hair loss. Even if on a remote possibility, hair should likely grow back.

Doctor Said I Can Quit Propecia After 6 Months – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi doc. I’m 20 years old and nw 1,5. I’ve been using propecia medication for 6 months with very good response but in the last appointment with my doctor he told me ‘it’s time to quit propecia and you will no more lose your hair.’ I have doubts what should I do? Can it be real, is it possible to beat MPB by taking early medication? If my doc is wrong what my decision have to be? Thanks.

Propecia (finasteride 1mg) works through inhibiting production of DHT, which is responsible for male pattern baldness. By stopping Propecia, you allow the DHT to be made from testosterone again, which can deleteriously affect your hair growth. If you look at this diagram of Propecia effect on hair count, you can clearly see that the rate of hair loss increases in patients who stopped Propecia and were put on placebo (solid circles on graph) and even after restarting them on Propecia after one year, the number of hairs doesn’t reach to the patients who continued using the medication.

The only reason to stop taking the medication is that a diagnosis of genetic male pattern hair loss is not present. To make this diagnosis, your doctor can map your scalp and if there is no miniaturization present, I would agree to recommend that you go off the Propecia; however, if miniaturization is present, then you should stay on the drug for the rest of your life as there is no cure for MPB. Talk to your doctor and make sure there is not any other reason for discontinuing the medication. You can take a copy of this blog posting and go over it with your doctor.

Do Animals Go Bald? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr. Rassman,

Do any animals go bald? If not, why don’t they?

Thanks.

Yes, there are animals that do go bald. I know of some mice with alopecia that is similar to some human family lines (alopecia totalis). Also some mice lose their hair as they get older and some have complex polygenic diseases that produce hair loss such as alopecia areata. There has been much written about mice, because they have been the human experimental models, but I am certain that similar problems must exist in other mammals. Guinea pigs are known to lose hair when they are pregnant (like some human females).

Can I Do Anything to Promote Facial Hair Growth? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr. Rassman,
I am 19 years old and still cannot grow a beard. I grow a little hair on my chin and a little on my upper lip. I cannot have side burns or a beard, both of which i would love to have. Is there anything at all that i can do to promote facial hair growth? Vitamins, certain foods?

I had a weak beard when I was 19 and freaked out on it. My father had a full, fast growing beard that I envied. Now I am like my father was and wished I had my 19 year old beard. It seems that we never really get what we want and if we do finally get what we want, we may no longer want it. Show patience and it will probably grow out as you get older.

After I Shaved My Mohawk, I See Hairs Falling Out – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I just had a mohawk for a little and decided to cut it off. I buzzed my head with an 8 so my hair is about an inch all over.

I notice hair now through out the day laying in front of me. When i shower I lose about 40 close to 50 hairs everytime. I look at my hand and actually count them. I put bees wax in my hair and spike it on the top into a mini fohawk.

This is really freaking me out. I’m wondering if I’m balding or not. Any help would be great thank you so much.

It is normal to lose 100 hairs a day. If you are still concerned about losing hair, you can have your scalp hair mapped for miniaturization to microscopically determine any hair loss pattern.

FUE Scarring, Healing, and Other Questions – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

  1. will FUE transplanted grafts grow in donor strip scar tissue?
  2. Do you recommend GraftCyte for healing of graft recipient sites?
  3. If a person wanted to have as much hair as possible and not care about having any hair at all on the back and sides of thier head, simulating a rock musician look or marine type cut. Can one successfully FUE that entire area artistically and move it all to the top?
  4. would the tiny dot scars left by the FUE punch eventually be able to tan or blend as not to be too noticeable in person?
  5. And finally if one is nearly totally bald on top – say a 5 vertex – how many grafts will give a thick head of hair on top, not the 50% theory but rather full density, 8000 10,000 or more?

thank you

Block Quote

I will answer your diverse questions in the order you wrote them:

  1. Yes, and it is a good method of revising scars of the scalp and can also be used for bad scars in donor area.
  2. Yes, GraftCyte contains copper peptide with a mild cleansing effect and we recommend using it for post operative patients who have a tendency to hold on to the red color after the surgery. It may enhance the healing of the recipient and donor area (claimed by the manufacturer) and it may be helpful to control scabbing and crusting of incisions.
  3. This is not practical and I doubt that any doctor would do this. We generally FOX-test most of our patients and the result dictates whether the patient would be a good candidate for FUE procedure or not. We do not recommend FUE for the patients with negative FOX (having high transaction rate).
  4. The scar of FUE is usually not noticeable, but it is there and does not contain pigment cells (as a rule) so the hairless spot will be noticed by discriminating eyes if the scalp is shaved.
  5. As a general rule, you need 3000+ grafts (about 6000 hairs if you are Caucasian with average density), to cover an area of the size of an adult hand with a reasonable density. For more density, for those with dark hair and light skin, or very fine straight hair, a redo procedure may become necessary.

Medical Causes of Miniaturized Hair? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

in regards to low testosterone and low lh question that was answered…..

Are other medical causes that would contribute to hair miniaturization other than DHT/aga?

Male pattern baldness is not the only cause of miniaturization, which could be seen in many other conditions, such as Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA). Most of the cases of miniaturization are chronic conditions with gradual thinning of the hair. In more acute balding conditions, such as stress related hair loss, fungal infections, or alopecia areata, you may not see any miniaturization.

Kevis – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I can find NO information/reviews of KEVIS on your website. Would you please research it and provide your opinion?

Kevis is a topical formulation comprised of non-drug, natural ingredients claimed to stop DHT from destroying hair follicles. Although, it has been commercially available in Europe for a while, no FDA-regulated studies have been conducted in United States that I know of, as the product does not need FDA clearance provided that claims for direct benefit is not made. Searching for available literature on this product, I could not find many convincing ‘objective’ evidence from any source which shows the effectiveness and safety of the product. They have had a strong marketing presence in the United States some years ago but like many similar products, there are too many promises of great hair loss remidies with too little to show. I guess we should wait for more credible research on this product, before making any further recommendations.

Hair Stopped Growing But Has Not Fallen Out – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i have a friend thats hair has stopped growing all together on one side. it hasnt fallen out an the scalp. it isnt red, sore, or look infected. i was wondering what could cause this?

It is not easy to make a diagnosis without the right information. I will assume that your friend is a young man and that he may be undergoing early male patterned genetic balding. Some men who are losing their hair from genetic causes will just stop growing their hair in the impacted area. Although this is not the common presentation, it does occur and it may last for months, even years before it falls out. The hair is often miniaturized (small, thinner hair shafts) and eventually a bald area will appear. Live hair follicles never stop growing and going in and out of their growth cycle.

T-Gel Shampoo and Recent Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

20 days post operation.

I am a 24 year old male and just had a hair transpant (2000 grafts). Everything seems to be going OK, however, I used a Tar Shampoo (T-Gel) for direct shampooing on the recipient area (twice) before reading that this may interfere with the growth of the grafts. I have switched to another shampoo, however, I am wondering if this has already affected the transplanted area in a negative way.

You can burn the hair below the skin. For a description of the product and its risks read MedicineNet. It would be unusual to negatively impact the new transplants at 20 days. You should go back to the doctor who did your transplants and ask him/her. I generally advise that after a transplant, you use gentle shampoos like baby shampoo, which is safe and will not burn the skin.
