Could Pre-Existing Gynecomastia Return with Propecia Use? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Is it possible to increase a pre-existing case of gynecomastia when taking Propecia? If the gyno is surgically removed, is it possible for it to return when continuing use of the drug?

If you had gynecomastia without the Propecia and it was successfully treated by surgical excision, the impacted target organ (the particular breast tissue that was the cause) is now gone, so I would be surprised to see you get it again from Propecia.

A New Drug for Hair Loss, NEOSH101 by Neosil – Balding Blog

Hello and thanks so much to you and your colleagues for creating this wonderful resource.

I recently read an article about phase II results of a new experimental topical hair loss treatment called NEOSH101 by a company named Neosil. The study includes statistical results, but I am not sure how these results compare to those of mainstream solutions such as Finasteride. Assuming that the results are true, how does this treatment stack up?

Please see this link for the info: http://www.sys-con.com/read/319216.htm

If the link is dead please search for NEOSH101 in google to find the press release. Thanks

There’s some information at these 2 links:

This is a drug in early clinical trials. Time will be needed to see if its value is as significant as finasteride or minoxidil (this comparison with minoxidil is in process at this time). I am encouraged by such clinical research and hopeful that it will be better than minoxidil.

The Transplanted Widow’s Peak (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

If I have a hair transplant, I want to know if you can put back the Widow’s Peak that I had as a kid?

Block Quote

Yes. See the photos of Extreme Makeover patient Marque below. The photo to the lower right shows a frontal hairline restoration with a widow’s peak, just as you asked. The photo at the left is before 2 procedures totaling 3455 grafts. When I create a widow’s peak, I generally do not like to make it ‘regular & tight’ and prefer to have some patchy elements to it, for it makes it look non-man made. Please click to enlarge.

Topical Estrogen and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

You recently wrote “Yes, any hormonal manipulation can cause hair loss”. can topical estrogen or estradiol cause hair loss in other parts of the body such as eyebrows & if so what are the chances that it would grow back.

Using estrogens, as in topical anti aging creams, has minimal systemic absorption and should not affect hair growth. Having said that, using topical estrogens for a long time or on a large area of the body may produce enough serum concentration and act like systemic drug. Estrogen is generally considered a protective hormone and hair loss is seen with its withdrawal, but playing with one hormone impacts other hormones and they might contribute to hair loss in special circumstances with some particular genetics influences (eyebrows or lashes). We know, for example, that female genetic hair loss is often not protected by estrogens.

Repairing Mediocre Transplant Results from 10 Years Ago – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello Dr. Rassman. I had mini-grafts preformed at [name removed] 10 years ago, with mediocre results. The grafts were placed in the wrong direction, and I also have “ridging”. Can mini-grafts be removed and then re-transplanted as smaller (follicular) units? Can anything be done to reduce ridging? Thanks

I have written extensively on this type of repair. The condition of ridging reflects a build-up of reactive tissues below the skin so that the skin at the hairline has an elevated ridge that is easy to see. This was a common result of the older plugs, rarely (if ever) seen in follicular unit transplantation. The ridge is best removed with the old plugs, just like we did on Dean’s Story and in the recommended articles below:

Ibuprofen Gel for Thinning Hair – Balding Blog

Use of Anti-inflammatory on scalp ? What is your view of applying small amounts of Ibuprofen gel to thinning hair. I have read that one component of hair loss is due to an inflammation reaction within the hair follicle. Would this help reduce that effect?

There is no evidence that either topical or systemic anti-inflammatory medications prevent hair loss. If anti-inflammatory medications could stop hair loss, the people with rheumatoid diseases who have taken high doses of these medications for a long time should have had immeasurable hair on their head, yet they bald at the same rate as those who do not take anti-inflammatory medications.

I Live in the UK, but NHI is in the US – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr Rassman,

I have read you’re blogging website avidly now for the past year..

I am a 24 year old male who has been on propecia for 6months I dont have any hair loss at the crowd I just have a receeding hairline which I want to consult with a HT. In an ideal world I would like to have a consultation with you but obviously distances would not allow that as you emphasis its important to keep up an on going relationship with your HT surgeon. Would it be possible for you to recommend any good HT clinics in the UK that you would recommend as Ive heard so many scare stories about poor HT I want to find the right doctor. Alternatively do you think its possible to have HT done by the NHI if I was to fly over, how would this work in the long term though as I know you outline the need for a long term master plan.

I hope you have the time to reply to this email and hope you had a good Christmas and New Years.

Yours faithfully

You can check on the ISHRS site for doctors in the UK using their physician search. If you want to come to California (air fares are very inexpensive now) please let’s establish the diagnosis over the phone (send photos here to start). With that, I can make certain assumptions about you. Six months of Propecia may not be adequate timing, but lets start by talking. I have many fly-overs from Europe.

FYI: If you live more than 150 miles from our office, you are eligible to participate in a travel program. NHI will reimburse you for up to 5% of your net procedure cost for reasonable transportation expenses incurred while traveling to one of our facilities for a seminar, consultation or procedure. If you drive to one of our facilities, you can choose to be reimbursed for either mileage or gasoline expenses. In addition, you will receive one night’s stay at a pre-selected area hotel at our expense if you have a surgery with us. Even from the UK, travel reimbursement may be covered with the promotional fees on various UK to LA runs.

Herbal Hair Shampoo – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi there, I am a 30yr old male and am interested to hear your thoughts on a product called ‘Herbal Hair Shampoo’ (http://www.herbalhairshampoo.com) which was rated top product on website http://golden-reviews.com/hair.html. Your comments are appreciated.
Cheers

The claims made by the company are far too extensive to be believed. The shampoo may be good, but I would doubt that it will grow any hair.

Has Your Attitude on Avodart Harshened? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Doc:

While I’ve never read where you actually recommended someone take Avodart for hairloss, it seemed in the past you were more open minded about it when the subject came up. Nowdays I sense you feel it’s a very bad idea. Has your perspective changed?

I would recommend Avodart only under unusual circumstances. As a general rule, I believe it is best staying with medications that are known effective and safe for a particular problem. Avodart use in a young man who could potentially get their wife or girlfriend pregnant, does not have enough data for my comfort.

If anything, I am more open minded now than I was before on the off-label use of Avodart, but I have only rarely prescribed it so far. The issue of dosing of the drug is still up in the air as the long half life of the drug (5+ weeks) could means that less frequent dosing is appropriate, but as there is no scientific information on the value based upon dosing, it adds to my general discomfort level for use.

Benicar and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi,

I am talking Benicar 20mg daily for about 3 years. Recently I lost a lot of hair (Type VI) without any specific reason. I wonder if Benicar is causing this?

Thanks

A rare side effect of Benicar is hair loss (source: WebMD / AOL Health). Get your health checked and your hair mapped out for miniaturization and cover all bases. Maybe, just maybe, your hair loss is from other causes.
