Half of My Moustache Stopped Growing! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello. I am a healthy 24 year old male. I have been growing facial hair for a while and can grow a full beard. All of the sudden the hair on the left side of my mustache stopped growing!!!! I have no idea why? It is completely bare. I have a full beard around it with this weird blank spot! Have you ever seen this before? What causes it to happen? How can I make the hair grow back? I want a beard again! Thanks.

No, I have never heard of this before. Please send me your picture. In the meantime, you may want to see your doctor for an examination. Minoxidil applied for 6-12 months may be a way to handle it, provided that there are no medical conditions, such as alopecia areata.

Hair Loss After GNC Mega Men Vitamin – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I was taking GNC’s megamans vitamn for about 3 months and many of my friends noticed an increased in my hair loss. I have stopped taking it since. My question is will my hair grow back after i stopped taking the vitamins?

We have written on this before.

If you are concerned about hair loss, you should have your scalp hair mapped for miniaturization to see if there is a pattern to the hair loss. If this has accelerated your genetic hair loss, chances are it could be permanent.

Hair Loss InformationFUE vs Strip Harvesting for Transplants – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am considering doing an FUE, and later on need I recognize that I may want another transplant, won’t the FUE cause my donor availablity to be less as compared to having the strip transplant?

Block Quote

I think that you must put the various surgeries that you may want into a Master Plan for your hair loss. If you are not going to be very bald, then an FUE solution is not an unreasonable one. The long term yields for an FUE may have to do with donor density, but for strip harvesting, I have exceeded 10,000 grafts over more than one surgery. With regard to your query, I do not believe that anyone really knows whether FUE will cause your donor availability to be less than that of the strip procedure, but I would personally doubt that FUE will yield more hair for transplantation than strip harvesting. There may be a role for combined FUE and strip at the end of the process.

What If I Take Avodart Once a Week? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello, I am a 23 year old male and have been taking propecia on and off for about 3 years, I recently began taking it every day and am hopping to see some new results. It has worked well until recently I have noticed some thinning on top, with little to no receding in front. Is it losing its effectiveness and will the new dose plan have any positive effect? Before i was taking it every couple of days.

I am considering adding avodart to my plan and am wondering if by taking a dose maybe once a week or so I would see any benefit and hopefully reduce some of the side effects, Will the long halflife of avodart make this possible?

In theory, you are correct. Nobody, however, really knows the real answer to the question on the dosing for Avodart (considering that it has a 5 week half life). The experience with Avodart is with older men (usually over 55) and the focus on sex is often less than in a 23 year old. There are significant sexual side effects on the 55 year old men taking Avodart and amongst the doctors who are recommending it in the ‘hair’ circle, there are reports of more sexual side effects with Avodart in the young man. As the drug is not FDA approved for hair loss use, there is really only anecdotal information and opinions on the subject available. You seem to want to be your own doctor. I always was told that a person who treats himself, may have a fool for a doctor. Your call.

I’m 20 with No Facial Hair, But My Teenage Brother Has a Mustache! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr.
I am 20 and have NO facial hair! my brother who is 15 has mustache. plz is there someting i can do to get facial hair? plz plz plz help me out.

Everybody is different. Having facial hair is genetic. I’m not sure if you’ve gone through puberty and have no pubic hair as well.

Case in point, Dr. Pak’s brother and father do not have facial hair, yet he can grow a full beard in a day.

Hormone Replacement Therapy and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 51 years old and have been on a combi patch for hot flashes for about 7 months. I have noticed my hair is falling out at an alarming rate. Have you heard of hormone replacement therapy causing hair loss? I have been considering either going off the meds or tapering it down by waiting an extra day or 2 to change the patch. Will the hormone flucuation cause more hair loss? Thanks

Yes, any hormonal manipulation can cause hair loss, and we see this condition regularly. Imbalance of estrogen and progesterone levels can accelerate hair loss in some women. You can try to switch to different medications to see if it helps. Changing the frequency of hormonal replacement therapy can be helpful, but needs to be done under supervision of a physician.

Hair Loss After Gastric Surgery – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 65 years old and in Aug 06, I had gastric surgery due to 5 yrs of partial bowel impactions caused by scar tissue & adhesions formed from previous surgeries. Also 10″ of colon removed. Since then, I have had excessive hair loss from scalp whenever I comb or wash my hair. Also, I’m using Roux Rinse Temporary Rinse weekly. What do you think could be causing my problem? Is there a cure or medicine I can take?

A big surgery can trigger telogen effluvium and accelerate hair loss. You can also read the post, Hair Loss and Gastric Bypass. Your surgery could have caused hair loss through two mechanisms:

  1. Stress of a big surgery and compensatory mechanisms of your body to divert nutrients toward vital organs.
  2. Removing part of the intestine can cause mal-absorption. When there is rapid weight loss, hair loss is not uncommon.

In those people with the switch for genetic hair loss inherited, the switch can be turned on by either stress or weight loss. Both of these conditions can either be temporary or permanent. Make sure you have a balanced diet with adequate amount of proteins, vitamins, and minerals.

Hair Loss InformationPropecia Causes Damage to the Penis – If It’s on the Internet, It Must Be True! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I take 1/2 Propecia once every other day and this seems to have completely halted hair loss and it will not cause the permanent side effects documented at www.propeciasideeffects.com and the forum at www.propeciahelp.com

Another strategy might be to take just 1/4 a table every day based on the pre-approval data submitted to the FDA which shows no statistical difference between .25 mg and 1 mg in the actual level of DHT at the scalp.

The bottom line is that although the Merck studies only cite a 2% occurance of side effects that were observed, this drug does cause change and damage to the penis itself if taken long enough.

So I think one should try to find a balance between the minimum amount of propecia needed to halt hair loss and then use other compounds to stimulate regrowth.

If you look at the placebo comparisons with finasteride, you will see that they are relatively close, but when people talk about drops in libido, the placebo data is rarely discussed. We offer finasteride (Propecia) at doses lower than 1mg per day to our patients (take a 1mg pill and cut it in half) if they have a drop in libido with the medication. In some patients, the side effects go away with lower doses of finasteride. In many patients who get the side effect of decreased libido, the side effect goes away in a month or two without changing doses. There is no research to support that lower doses of finasteride causes less side effects and this is only suggested on rare times by us based on logic. There is also no proof to show that lower doses of finasteride can provide the same results on prevention of hair loss in balding patients, in fact, the clinical tests show that the 1mg dose is the best dose for effectiveness against hair loss. There are some studies on effectiveness of lower doses of finasteride on animals, but before we see more results from human studies, we can not recommend a lower dose hair loss treatment.

DHT is crucial for growth and development of male genital organs before puberty, but there is no report of any changes in size and shape of male genitalia in adults who take finasteride for a long time. I have to emphasize that finasteride is contraindicated in children and pregnant women, and may adversely affect development of genitalia in male children or unborn babies.

Why Does Propecia Take Months to Show Benefits? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Doctor,

You have the best website by a mile! I have a couple of unrelated questions:

1) Why does Propecia take 8-12 months to show hair regrowth ?
2) Any comments on hair club for men’s biomatrix process (which is advertised on their website). I believe it is a hoax but wanted to confirm.

Thanks

Thank you for your compliment!

  1. It takes months 6-12 months for finasteride (Propecia) to show its effectiveness, because it is dependent on the hair growth cycle which takes about that long just to ‘switch gears’. Then hair grows at 1/2 inch per month.
  2. I believe Hair Club’s Biomatrix is a type of wig applied with a special process. Sometimes it is difficult to tell what it is that is being sold.
