Transplanting Into Big Scar — Poor Blood Supply Problem? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 30 y/o.I just want to know if hair transplant is still effective for me since i want to have my scar on the scalp be covered again with hair.I had an accident 20 years ago which left a big scar on my scalp.Would hair transplant be still effective?i know there is already poor blood supply on a scarred tissue which made me think that hair wont grow anymore on the scar after hair transplant.

I can’t answer your question without knowing more. Many large scalp scars are best treated with scalp expanders and the results can be very impressive. As you used the word ‘big’ scar, am I correct to assume that the scar is larger than a baseball? You can send photos (please reference this post) and I’ll be able to tell you more.

Long Term Effects from Chemical Burns – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

what are the long term effects from chemical burns from hair highlighting? how long can it take a burn to heal completly? for first to second chemical burns what are normal treatments for those?

thank you

The mechanism of healing in chemical burns usually follows the healing of heat burn wounds. A first degree burn, which only has some redness and sensitivity of skin, is expected to recover within hours. A second degree burn generally involves deeper layers of skin and may include blisters. You need to visit a physician for a second degree burn, especially if a large area of skin is involved. Healing may take days to months depending on size of the burn.

Is It Worth Me Taking Propecia at 35 Years Old? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr Rassman,

I am a 35 year old male, and my hair is thinning fairly evenly on ALL of the top of my head.

Bearing in mind how Propecia is more effective in younger men, and how the drug is effective mainly on the crown, would it really be worth me taking it? Could propecia halt thinning/stimulate hair growth on all of the top of the head, particularly as I’m mid 30’s?

Thankyou.

Yes, yes, yes. If you have any balding or thinning, then Propecia (finasteride) is the only FDA-approved way to go to prevent or slow the hair loss progression.

How Could a 19 Year Old Get Proscar for Treating Hair Loss? – Balding Blog

hey doc! this is a great site.
im 19 and i have finally stopped denying that im going bald ( took me long enough ). i was wondering how i could get my hands on some proscar? i thinking that my doctor will only prescribe me propecia because proscar is not offically used for MPB. THANKS, i have recently become a daily reader!

Proscar and Propecia are both finasteride and the only difference is their strength. Proscar (finasteride 5mg) is 5 times stronger than Propecia (finasteride 1mg) and that is why it need to be cut into 4 pieces (cutting pills into 5 pieces is not easy) to provide 1.25mg of finasteride. There shouldn’t be any reason not to prescribe Proscar for hair loss. You can share this post with your doctor in your next visit if you wish.

Hair Loss InformationThe Common Message You Give to Readers is Almost Useless – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr. Rassman,

I’ve been reading your blog for a very long time and really appreciate all the time you’ve put into it.

A common message that you send out to all your readers is 1) the importance of a master plan, and 2) miniaturization mapping…

Now, with all due respect, I believe this advice is almost useless to a lot of us. Almost every doctor I’ve come across has been absolutely clueless to these two topics, and every hair specialist that I’ve encountered have been pushy salesmen that you just can’t trust. It’s very rare – and probably in many circumstances / areas – almost impossible to find a doctor like you.

Can you perhaps provide us with some more PRACTICAL advice given these circumstances? Your advice is very much relevant, no doubt, but I don’t know how ‘realistic’ it is…

Again I don’t mean any offense, I just wanted to make you aware of what a lot of readers might be experiencing.

SalesmanI am both pleased and frustrated by your question. What I say and what I try to teach in this blog should be basic to every good doctor who claims expertise in any field. If you think about it, when someone has a progressive medical problem (cancer, morbid obesity, kidney or liver disease, or hair loss) it would be malpractice not to have a plan of treatment beyond a single visit.

Imagine if you were unfortunate enough to get cancer of the testicle and your doctor took out one testicle and said, “Call me when the other testicle has a tumor and I would be pleased to take it out.” Can you imagine the doctor saying to himself, “I got the big $$$$ for taking out the testicle, now let him fend for himself until there is enough money in it for me to get involved again“? Such thinking is untenable to me and to every person needing a ‘doctor’, one who is supposed to care and spend enough time to lay out a Master Plan for following up his treatment. Fortunately, most doctors who do cancer surgery, follow liver disease, treat AIDS or diabetes do care about their patients so the untenable behavior outlined above, is not the typical case scenario that a person with cancer has to face.

The problem in the hair transplant industry is that there are just too many doctors that behave like ‘used car salesmen’ and are looking to make a fast buck. For these doctors, a hair transplant procedure seems to be a good way to do it. I would personally never see a doctor for any reason if he/she did not treat me with respect by giving me enough of his/her time to address my fears and care about my feelings. Every medical condition requires a follow-up and hair loss is no exception. I know what you are saying is true, too much so, and I am outraged by those who think of the transplant patient as a way to pay off their expensive car. There are many good doctors out there and it is your duty to find them and not accept the ‘scummy’ doctors out there, It is a buyer beware problem and if you are interested in a hair transplant, it is your problem if you make the wrong selection. You can establish a dialogue with me if you wish (emails work and a photo consultation is offered to all at the email address on the contact page, or I am available by phone toll-free at 1-800-NEW-HAIR). Personally, I feel that you should never compromise on the quality of care you should be demanding. You have the control over your destiny, so use your power to make good decisions and stay away from those doctors who are hardened, uncaring, greedy and self-serving.

Hair Loss InformationOvercoming Hair Cloning Obstacles – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello

As far as I understand the three main obstacles with hair cloning are:

1) unpredictable direction of growth
2) unpredictable density
3) unpredictable quality

Cant all these problems be solved by first injecting the multiplied cells to a different part of your body (for instance the back of you upper leg), wait for the hair to grow out (in a wild unpredictable pattern), and finally transplanting the new hair esthetically to your scalp like you perform an ordinary transplant surgery?

It is not that simple. I was told that the mice that had it done as you suggested (in the late 1980s), had died from overwhelming infection. I wish I could track down a published source to back that up. The answer is far more complex, but this is not the place to write a book on the subject.

Article – Trichotillomania Resistant to Treatment – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Doctors in my field have been reluctant to take on patients with trichotillomania, because the condition is a compulsive disorder which stays, only to bring about recurrence of the hair loss. In many ways, trichotillomania is analogous to obesity, for when a person loses weight, if the cause of the eating disorder is not cured, the weight loss is bound to return.

Minimizing Damage Caused From Bleach Burning Scalp – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

what do you recommend if your scalp gets burned from a hair bleaching??

I cant FIND ANYHING ABOUT WHAT TO DO! There must be some way of minimizing the damage afterwards….

Cool it off? Apply something?? Anything??

regards

If your scalp is burned AND your hair is impacted by the burn AND there are changes in the hair character (thinner, finer hair) that last more than 6 months, you may have permanent changes. Generally, temporary problems resolve in 6-8 months. I have no suggestion as to what you might do if the hair is damaged below the skin. Hopefully, it is not a diffuse damage and it is possible that if there are localized areas where the problem is greatest (and the back and sides are in good shape), a hair transplant into the problem areas may have value provided that they are not extensive. You need to be examined by an expert.

I Had 2 Hair Transplant Procedures Totalling 390 Grafts – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I had 2 hair transplants. 1 in 2002, about 300. And I had to go back in 2004 to get about 90 more because most of them fell out. Its starting to do it again. Please help me.

I don’t mean for this to sound rude, but how do you want me to help you?

Hair transplants should be permanent, as permanent hair from the back of the scalp is transplanted to the balding area. You may have hair loss from the native (original) hair that was around your transplant, and the hair transplant may have failed.

What troubles me is that typically 300 grafts or 90 grafts are very low numbers to transplant and may not provide the adequate coverage, unless perhaps you are filling in a very small area. If that is the case though, I might question if you needed a procedure (or 2) at all. You may want to get a second opinion. If you would like, I can review your case, but I’ll need more information and photos. Please arrange for a private consult by calling (800) NEW-HAIR. Emailing pictures to the address on the contact page will help. Your privacy is guaranteed and they will not be placed on the internet unless your permission is given. Please reference this blog posting when sending photos or calling.
