Norwood Class 4 Patient — Is 2500 Grafts To Hairline Risky? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr. Rassman….Happy New Year. I’m scheduled for a 2500 graft procedure with a “top doc”. I’m 32…norwood 4 with so so donor. Do you think it’s risky to do a 2500 graft procedure in the hairline at this point? My doc feels that even if I thin out in the back I’ll be fine

Norwood 4AThis is what I do. One large session of 2500 or so grafts in a Norwood Class 4A pattern is about the right number. Be sure that you are taking finasteride (Propecia) prior to having the transplants. You need to keep what you have.

Good luck!

I’m Stressed, But I Think Protein Shakes Are Beneficial to My Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi,

2006 was a stressful year. I had a lot on my mind and my sleep was disrupted quite a lot. At the same time, I started going to the gym regularly and drinking protein shakes. Towards the latter part of the year I’ve noticed my hair has been thinning more than usual and is now brittle too. I’m a 26 year old male. The ingredients of the powder seem to be beneficial to the hair.

My theories:

  1. I’m not taking on enough protein/carbs to rebuild muscle as well as keep my hair healthy.
  2. The opposite: the powder is affecting my hair even though the amino acids etc in it seem good for hair.
  3. Not enough rest/sleep.
  4. None of the above.

If I stop taking on this powder but theory 1 is correct then things will get worse. Is there anyone in the world who can give me a definitive answer? Any advice?

Many thanks

A positive nitrogen balance (achieved with good nutrition) should not impact hair loss, unless you were malnourished in the first place. The high protein intake (from protein shakes) will not help prevent or reverse hair loss.

You are stressed. The four major causes of hair loss in men are:

  1. Genes: If you have genetic balding, it should show by mapping out your scalp for miniaturization.
  2. Hormones: If your testicles are working, you will have the hormones.
  3. Stress: Sounds like you have more than your share of stress. Working out will reduce the stress for many men.
  4. Time: The longer the exposure of hormones and stress to the genetically impacted hair, the more the balding pattern will evolve.

These are the patterns that evolve from balding:

Took Propecia and Minoxidil, Then Just Propecia, Now I Want Both Again… – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello, I know people thank you all the time for this blog, but I think you deserve it again. Thanks!

Well, unfortunately for me, life threw me a curveball. My hairline started to recede already at the age of 18. I’m 20 now and have been on propecia for a year and seven months. My hair hasn’t gotten worse since I’ve been on propecia. I started taking minoxidil through the Extreme Hair Therapy regimen. It made my hair look a little better, but eventually, I ran out of patience. After 10 months of taking the minoxidil, I stopped. That was about 4 months ago. My question to you is, if I decide to start using minoxidil again, will I regain what I may have lost having stopped it? Bare in mind that when I stopped using the minoxidil, I still continued taking propecia.

I want to preserve as much hair as I can. Eventually, I want to get a transplant done so I can fix my frontal hairline.

Thank you very much for taking time to read this.

I am not clear. Did you lose hair after stopping minoxidil? If so, there is value in it and you should continue its use again. If you lost no hair after stopping minoxidil, I would not go back on it and just stick to the Propecia. I can not say if taking minoxidil will help, but it is worth a try if you had a clear benefit from its previous use.

Possible to Shampoo Too Much? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi,

Is it ok to shampoo my hair twice a day. I shampoo my hair when I wake up and then again after I work out. I have read on some sites that using shampoo too much can contribute to baldness. Is this true?

Thanks

Frequent (twice daily) shampooing will not cause hair loss or promote it, providing that you are not very aggressive at pulling on the hair.

My Doctor Said Shock Loss After a Hair Transplant Will Regrow – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello,

Towards the end of November I underwent hair transplant surgery. Recently, I’ve been experiencing incremental hair loss and I’m becoming concerned. I spoke to my doctor and he said that additional hair loss or shock loss commonly occurs in post-op patients and that the lost hair will grow back in time. Well, after reading some of your blog entries it seems that my doctors explanation is conflicting. As such, I was hoping for your expert opinion in respect to my particular case. As background information, I’m 26 years old and I’m taking both Propecia and Rogaine. Thanks in advance for your help, as well as the informative blog.

As you are on Propecia (finasteride 1mg), you are taking the most effective step at preventing shock loss after a hair transplant. In young men, my experience has shown that shock loss is rare when the patient is on Propecia, but if it is the original miniaturized hair that you are losing, it may not come back. Hopefully, the new hair from the transplant will more than offset the hair lost from shock. I have no crystal ball, so you must wait out the regrowth cycle (3-5 months).

I Had 2 Hair Transplants, Both Times Hair Didn’t Grow – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I had hair transplants twice, 1500 and 800. Each time hair grew for 8 to 10 months then most fell out. The doctor was in first year doing hair transplants. He said something is wrong with me. He said they should have grown. What do you think happen? Thanks

This does not sound kosher to me. If the new hair grew, it should have kept growing. Did it really grow? Did you lose native hair rather than transplanted hairs? You need a second opinion that you can trust.

Galvanic Spa for Hair Health? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Have you heard of the Galvanic Spa for hair?

One of the sources that I located said: “갈바닉 스파 브로셔 pdf파일변환”. It did not make much sense to me (a small language problem, but I am sure that some of my readers understand the message). One English source showed a picture of it that looks like a cattle electric shocker (see here). It delivers an electric current to the area it is applied to. Also look at Nuskin.com for more.

There are doctors who use electricity to stimulate many things. We know, for example, that an electric current put between two ends of a broken bone will prevent ‘failure to heal’ complications and may accelerate bone growth. There is also some experimentation on diabetic mice that show electrical stimulation may enhance hair growth on the backs of these mice. So it is not way out of line to think that some type of electrical stimulation might have value, but human experimentation with ‘odds’ that are not favorable on such speculation (what is the duration of the electrical application, how is it going to be applied, how frequently, voltage and amperage?), does not make good sense for your use at this time. I can not endorse this product.

Baldness Miracle Pill Conspiracy? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

If baldness was cured tommorow would you still have a job? I dont mean that as disrespect but I think its in your best interest and all these various other baldness product companies to keep all us guys with struggling hairlines chasing that miracle cure, that never really fully works. If for example someone was to create a miracle pill tommorow companies like Merck (the company that makes Propecia) would stand to lose MILLIONS of dollars and there stock would litterally plummet over night! If and when the day comes it will be very interesting to see what occurs. There might be some sabotage involved! Anyway I think its all a bit of a conspiracy. Great website by the way, I enjoy reading many of the posts….Extremelly Amuzing

If there is a cure for baldness, it would be the best thing that could happen to my job. Who else would be more qualified to administer this ‘cure’? There are those who believe the moon landing occurred in a movie studio in Arizona, and for those, the conspiracy may still live on (even in the field of hair loss).

Any Physician Preference of Shampoo or Conditioner? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have always been wondering if there is a preferred method by physicians on how we should wash our hair… shampoo only? Use seperate shampoos and conditioners? Use a 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner? How, if it all, would this change if you have dandruff? Thank you and regards.

ShampooThere is no particular shampoo that I recommend. Everybody is different and has individual preferences. I do not believe one is better than the other. As long as it works for you that should be all that matters. Shampoos or conditioners do not affect hair loss that is associated with male pattern (genetic) balding. You should try quite a few and settle in on the ones that achieve your goals best. I tend to focus upon the suds and the smell that I like.

Hair Loss InformationMajor Scabbing a Week After Surgery, Not Sure How to Aggressively Wash – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi, It has been 7 days since I had my FUSS procedure. I am pleased with the results, however i still have major scabbing, and blood clots on the receipient area. I have tried to search your website and previous answers to find out what how to aggressively wash the area so that the scabbing and clots are reduced, but I was unable to find any clear answers. I would really like the scabbing to go down in the next week or so as I have to return to work. Please help.

Block Quote

This is a question you should be asking your doctor. Good cleanings after surgery must be started on the first post operative day. With major scabbing now, you run the risk of graft loss if you dislodge them at this stage (see Washing Scalp After Transplant).
