Can I Stop Minoxidil After My Hair Transplant? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi, as a female with a HT, I have been afraid to use Minoxidil because I CANNOT find the answers to my questions. Is MINOXIDIL a life sentence? Can I stop using it once I feel my HT has reached full potential WITHOUT ANY NEGATIVE EFFECTS on my “new” or existing hair?

A response would be truly helpful to me and many others.

Thanks you sooooooooooooo much for this blog. I consult it daily.

xoxo

Minoxidil is not a life sentence. You can stop using it, and it will not affect your transplanted hairs. However the pre-existing hairs that Rogaine has supported or the new hairs that were the result of Rogaine may fall out. Unless you noticed a huge benefit from Rogaine, I suspect you really will not notice any difference if you stop using it.

African American Female with Bald Crown – Balding Blog

I am an african American female 35 years old. My entire crown is bald. What do I do now? I’ve been using 2% minoxidil and it continues to fall out.

You need to be seen for close examination of your hair and scalp. A diagnosis should be made. You could have a variety of non-genetic hair conditions causing it. You might have genetic female balding limited to the crown as well. I need to know the miniaturization mapping results of your scalp and the pattern of your hair loss before making any diagnosis and treatment plan. You need a good doctor to take charge of your hair loss.

Is Avodart Going to Be FDA Approved for Treating Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I read someone’s comment in one of your blog entries from long ago, suggesting that Avodart was seeking approval from the FDA (something about being in Stage 2 trials). We know it hasn’t gotten FDA approval, but are they actually seeking it?

AvodartThere is a report just published two weeks ago on the U.S. government website ClinicalTrials.gov which indicates that phase III clinical trials are in process for Avodart in Korea. That is great news for us, because the indications are strong that Avodart (dutasteride) will be more effective than Propecia for the treatment of male patterned genetic hair loss. The most pointed questions which need to be answered are the frequency of side effects, particularly sexual libido supression.

There are some studies out there proving the efficacy of Avodart (dutasteride) for prevention of hair loss. It is documented that blocking type one 5-alpha reductase may be as important as type two in treatment of baldness. Unfortunately, the study done at Duke University, published in December 2006, is limited to 24 weeks and we don’t have enough information on the long term effects of dutasteride on hair loss.

Hair Loss InformationCould Propecia Side Effects Start Months or Years Into Treatment? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

How common is it for side effects from propecia to develop months, or even years into treatment? With so many horror stories posted on the internet, is it unreasonable to assume that if you are months into treatment and have had no side effects that you are in good standings and potentially could take the drug (so long as it is working) for more of a long term treatment? Finally, in your personal opinion do you feel that noticiable thinning but no bald spots at 22 is too young to begin propecia, or that I am using up the drug’s period of effectiveness too soon? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Most of the side effects of the medication Propecia (finasteride) are seen in the first few months immediately after starting it. As a matter of fact, most side effects improve with time. The most problematic side effect, which is decreased libido, is proven to get as low as in the placebo group if patients continue taking the drug for over one year. The reality, however, is that as we age, our sexual performance may decrease, our marriages tend to get stale and if you are taking Propecia, it may produce performance issues as you get older for either of these reasons.

With you in your early 20s (with significant thinning vs. balding), you are a better candidate for Propecia than a man in his 50s and the sexual issues, with all of the testosterone floating around, is rarely the problem.

Hair Loss InformationSo When Should We Invest in Intercytex Stock? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

If in fact intercytex is only a few years away from a permanent fix for baldness, when is a good time for us bald guys to invest in their stock so we can not only get hair but also make a absolute killing on the stock market ?

Good question and I wish I knew the answer. This company has many good products and appears to be a good investment on their main line offerings. Be sure to check them out properly. If you believe that the company will live or die on cloning hair, don’t hold your breath.

I Still Have Hair In The Hairline — Will Propecia Help or Hurt That Area? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Thank you for your very informative and interesting site. I have read about Propecia extensively and it seems the wording describing the known benefits on the frontal hairline are very vague. I know Propecia has “very little evidence to support regrowth in the temporal regions,” but what if you still have hair in the frontal region? Will Propecia help or hurt the campaign to maintain hair growth in that specific area?

I am assuming that you are a male. What is your age? I can not do you justice to work in the dark. I will therefore answer your question as if you are a young man, under 25 years old. Propecia was only studied for its impact in the crown, so the drug company can make no claims about its impact on frontal hair loss. I can, however, tell you my experience as a clinician. I have seen frontal hair loss reverse (not commonly) and hair fill in behind the hairline in many young men with thinning. Propecia has no impact on non-genetically damaged hair. A normal person taking Propecia (one who has no balding) will not get any observable effect from the drug. Therefore, any hair that is normal and still present in the frontal area will not be negatively impacted, but if hair is being lost in the frontal area, then as a young man you can expect that if you do not protect the hairs that remain in the frontal area, they too will be lost. If you are balding, be sure to get your hair mapped out for miniaturization to determine the diagnosis and get a baseline that will form a Master Plan for your future under the guidance of a good, honorable, caring doctor.

How Bad Is It If I Forget to Take My Propecia One Day Every Once in a While? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

In the grand scheme of things, what is the effect of NOT taking Propecia one day every few months? I have been on the medication for a year now, and it seems like once a month or so (for some reason or another) I miss taking the pill. How serious is this?

If a diabetic skipped insulin every other day, he/she may end up very sick. Skipping Propecia is not the recommended routine, but it is not life or death. If you forget to take the pill once in a while, you won’t lose all of your hair or benefits of Propecia. I wouldn’t recommend skipping it, but if it you happen to forget one day, you won’t run a huge risk in losing medication effectiveness.

Hair Loss from Asacol or Prednisone? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m taking prednisone and asacol, my hair is falling out quite a bit and the dr. doesn’t agree that it’s from Asacol. He thinks it may be from the prednisone. Will this subside? I’ve been taking asacol for about 3 months and about a month ago is when my hair started falling out drastically. Its getting very thin, and I’m afraid of going bald and as a female that’s very scary.

Based on the medications you are taking, I assume you have IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). Prednisone is one of the many medications that may cause you to lose hair or have thinning of the hair. It causes many other negative side effects. However, if you need to be on these medications for a medical condition, it is a catch 22 situation. You need to speak to your doctor about your side effects and your concern for hair loss. You should never stop taking any medication on your own without speaking with your doctor.

The “Baby” Hairs – 5 Months After Hair Transplant (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Take a look at the very early growth in the first photo below, which reflects the first wave of growth following a hair transplant procedure of 2730 grafts. The new short hairs are easily covered by the hair from behind. When combed forward, the new hair blends with the old hair nicely. I’ve also included the before photo and a photo from 2 weeks after his procedure, just to be complete and so that you can get the full scope of what was done. Some of the short newly transplanted hairs have already fallen out and others that appear to be pointing the wrong way are actually about to fall out. Click the photos to enlarge.

For an example of a past patient with similar results (but further along), please see radio host Steve Hartman‘s results. I’ve posted 3 photos of Steve below — the first photo is before the procedure, the middle photo is at the 5 month mark after his procedure, and the photo on the right is at around 14 months post procedure. I apologize that the angles are slightly different, but they illustrate the point that the above patient still is in the early stage and has a lot to look forward to. Click the photos to enlarge.
