When Should I Expect Regrowth from Propecia? – Balding Blog

Hi, I have a question about Propecia’s ability to possibly regrow hair on men experiencing MPB. I understand from your previous posts that regrowth (if it occurs) will typically happen with young men with recent hair loss.

Does regrowth of hair typically occur with men who respond quickly to Propecia (eg after about 3 months taking the pill)? If I don’t see regrowth after about a year of taking Propecia, is it still possible to see a sudden and dramatic turnaround after 12 months? Thanks.

Hair regrowth benefits from Propecia may be detected within the first 1-8 months after starting the medication, but the hair must grow out to see the real benefit so we generally put the timeline at 8-12 months. This timeline does reflect the value seen my patients who report either cessation of hair loss or hair regrowth. Based on the results of the studies, if you don’t see a significant result after one year, it is unlikely that you will become blown away after that.

FUE and Scars – Balding Blog

i saw the ‘Follicular Unit Extraction’ video on ur website. i want to know whether the donner area will have any scars and weather the donner area will grow any hair in future. how about a person who wants to keep very short hair??

The FUE will produce scars that are punctate, which that means they look like very small dots. The hair can be cut very short, but not shaved completely. A shaved scalp will show these small dots.

Hair Loss InformationI Think I Have Triangular Alopecia – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello:
I am 19 years old, male. I have been strugling with what, I have recently found, must be Congential Temporal Triangular Alopecia. I’ve had a receded hairline, mainly on the sides, including the temples, for as long as I can remember. My hair has always been full enough in the widow’s peak, front, portion that I could style it to (try to) hide it. (I feel like I am getting to old for that now though, I’m going to have to admit my terrible hairline exists eventually.) But it’s always been there; in fourth grade the girl I sat next to in class first told me that I had a receding hairline. Since then, it has been un uphill battle. I’m now a freshman in college, and my hair is getting to me more than it ever has before. It’s hard to see most of my classmates enjoying their youthful hair, and I’m left with a hairline worse than most 50 year olds.

But, back to the condition. I have bald temples, more or less, on both sides. The right side seems to be a little worse than the left. As far as hair loss, I think I may have been experiencing it my whole life (I have always toweled off my body first when I get out of the shower, or else I will get little hairs, from my head, all over my body,) but I can’t be sure as to the extent, since I have nothing to compare it with. I have never had hairloss come in patches, though. And I don’t know if I am actually losing my hair, or if it’s just my naturally bad hairline playing tricks on me. I know you are going to suggest that I see a physician to find out whether or not I am experiencing genetic balding, which I will do, but my concern now lies in the condition itself. I haven’t been able to find out much about it. I am also interested in treatment options. I have considered, later down the line, maybe transplating some hair to my temples so my hairline doesn’t go back like a V and STRAIGHT down at the sides (like it does now). I have included pictures, but I ask that you do NOT publish them, I’m sure you can understand why. Thank you so much for your time; I have been struggling with this for so long alone, and it feels great to have someone knowledgable on the subject to ask questions of.

Thanks again

As per your request, I have not published the photos you included with your email. Thank you for sending them though, as it is a big help when answering questions like this.

If what you have is indeed triangular alopecia (it looks that way to me), hair transplantation is a good option. I would want to know if you have any miniaturization anywhere else in your scalp. You could also have genetic balding that is not seen in your photographs, and it may not yet appear at your present age. If you have genetic balding as you get older, then you may not have enough hair (supply / demand issue) to follow back the further hair loss. Am I correct to assume that the triangular alopecia shown here in the photographs you sent to me is stable now?

Hair Loss InformationScalp Massage After Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

i am a male who had approx. 1800 grafts 4 months ago. i have yet to see growth of any kind. about 2 weeks after i had the procedure done, my girlfriend gave me a scalp massage. none of the grafts were lost as a result, but could damage have been done and could this be the reason i haven’s seen any growth yet?

We’ve studied pulling hair within the first few days after the surgery, and our studies have shown that you can not dislodge hair grafts after the eschar (scabs) are gone. The persistence of eschars is a matter of how well you wash your hair after the surgery. Good washing techniques make the scabs disappear faster. I doubt your girlfriend damaged your hair with scalp massage. Give it a few more months and you should see new hair sprouting (it takes 3-5 months for most of the hair to start growing after a hair transplant).

Hair Loss InformationIf I Pull Out a Hair, When Does It Start to Grow Back? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

If a hair is pulled out prematurely but the hair follicle isn’t damaged (brushing, drying your hair too roughly with a towel), does the next hair begin growing ‘immediately’, or does it wait until the next hair cycle (which could be many months away)?

Also if a hair is pulled out prematurely is there a risk that the hole in the skin could heal / close up before the next hair has a chance to grow out, especially if the hair is miniaturized?

If you pull out a miniaturized hair, it might be permanent (depends upon where it is in its loss cycle). Generally, pulled hair (healthy hair that is) will return fairly quickly after it is pulled out and the pore that it exits from does not close up.

Hair Loss InformationNo More Morning Erections After Taking Propecia for a Month – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’ve been on Propecia for just over a month, and I realized I don’t get morning erections anymore. (I know for a fact I got them before) Is this something to worry about?

I’m only 21 and any change in sexual function for me is something I want to pay close attention to. Do you think this is just my body trying to adjust to the drug?

Block Quote

Sexual function has a very complicated mechanism and several factors are involved. The most important factor is usually stress that often could be seen with acceleration of hair loss. One way that you can see if your sexual function changes are due to the new medication is to stop it and monitor the changes. Are you having difficulty maintaining and getting an erection?

Inversion Therapy – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Inversion Therapy: What is your view of this i.e hanging upside down for a few minutes each day to increase blood flow to the scalp. Any benefits to slowing hairloss or re-growth ?

Thanks

The theory of baldness being due to lack of blood is outdated now. In fact there is no evidence to prove the scalp blood supply in balding people is less than in non-balding people, but when the balding happens, the blood supply goes down as a response to the hair being lost. Hair has a very high metabolic rate, so when it dies off from genetic balding, there is no real need for the blood supply that once bathed the hair follicles.

One of my patients actually had this type of therapy for 6 months, haning from his feel for a few hours each day. Guess what? No news is not good news! It did not work!

Can You Place Grafts Between Growing Full Hairs? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Doctor Rassman,
I have very full hair on my head, pretty long, but the forehead starts getting lighter. Also in between I do not like that it starts shining through and becomes thinner. Is there a chance even to put grafts in between of the growing full hair just to make the appearance even fuller? Also I would like to think about working on the receding hairline.

I appreciate your coming back to me and remain with kindest regards

It is hard to answer your question, because I do not know what you are seeing. If you get your hair mapped out for miniaturization we might know what it is that you are seeing. Is this the early stages of thinning genetic hair loss? Without quantifying the miniaturization, I can not help you.

Generally, placing transplanted hair next to healthy hair does little damage, but it is possible that you could damage any hairs that are miniaturizing. Most people do not ask for more thickness if they have their normal hair with its full bulk present, so I am going to assume that you are miniaturizing in the area you want to thicken up, which would change my answer to your question as yes, your miniaturized hair can be permanently damaged from a transplant that is done without regard to a proper Master Plan for your hair loss.

We commonly see hair transplants done in “normal” hair areas. This occurs when a doctor ‘sells’ a transplant to make money and places transplants on the entire head when only a part of the head is bald. Unfortunately, I see this done too often, even in Los Angeles. The other day, I had a patient come to see me who maybe needed 800 grafts, but he was sold over 3000 grafts at another clinic, which was transplanted over a year ago. To make matters worse, of the 800 that should have been placed in the frontal hairline to thicken it, less than half of that number grew there. The other 2200+ grafts were put into other parts of his normal scalp. Other than the loss of his money charged for the unnecessary surgery, there was no damage to the normal transplanted hair throughout his head. Again, my motto is: Let the Buyer Beware!

Breast Enlargement from Propecia – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Do you believe the breast enlargement side effect of Propecia 1mg Finasteride is all or none? In other words are you either one of the 1/300 people who will experience this side effect or will everyone have some very small degree of breast enlargement from taking the drug? Just wondering what your opinion is on this. Thanks!

Block Quote

Although breast tenderness and enlargement with finasteride (Propecia) is reported by some patients, its incidences in the clinical studies were not different from those in patients treated with placebo. I have seen only a few patients with this symptom after starting the medication and most of the patients never experience anything like that. I do believe that in those small few who get this side effect, there is a relationship between Propecia and the breast enlargement, but if this happens, it happens in an ‘all or none’ way as you suggested in your question.
