Pain in Donor Area One Day After Transplant – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Dr. Rassman,
I am one day post-op from my first hair transplant. Right now, the only problem that I’m having is pain in the donor area. Can I sleep normally at night without disturbing the recently placed grafts? They told me to rest sitting up, but this is uncomfortable for me. Thanks.

Sleeping normally will work after a day or two post transplant. This information is something that should have been covered. Did you receive written instructions? By the time you read the post, you should be better. I always wonder why someone would ask me (a doctor they have not met) rather important questions when they have a doctor that they trusted to perform the surgery. I do appreciate the question, but your doctor should outline all of these issues for you.

Switched from Old Rogaine to Rogaine Foam – Now I’m Losing Hair! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Rogaine FoamI received 2 recent emails relating to the same thing, so I’ve combined them into one post…

Email 1:

Hi here is my question. I have been using rogaine from costco for the past 2 years, during that time regrew alot of hair and was very happy with the result. However 3 months ago i started using the Rogaine Foam and my hair started falling, now i can clearly see my scalp it’s horrible and very stressful, if the content of the foam is thesame minox 5%, why am i loosing more and more hair. Thanks.

Email 2:

I tried liquid minoxidil 5% and Rogaine Foam. I think I had better results with the liquid. Is it possible? Everyone is raving about the Foam!?

Block Quote

Honestly, I don’t know. It is the same medication, just in a different formulation. There is no medical reason why you would be noticing more hair loss. It may be just coincidental.

If any other readers want to discuss their experiences between the liquid and foam (positive or negative), please feel free to leave a comment.

My Son Has Hair Loss Around a Cyst – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My 12 yr old son had an infected cyst on his scalp which has caused a penny sized bald patch. Our doctor said his hair should grow back if left alone, but I am wondering if the cyst needs to be removed to allow the hair to grow back. The painful swelling of the cyst is gone down and there is just a soft jelly like lump where the cyst was. Can you tell me if his hair is likely to grow back without any surgery. Thank you.

I cannot tell you anything different than what your doctor has already told you. Hair should grow back if left alone. If it does not grow back there is an option for a hair transplant surgery to address the small bald patch. Excision of these cysts may be appropriate if it returns infected again.

What Percentage of Growth Can I Expect 6 Months After a Hair Transplant? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr. Rassman, I went for a strip procedure 6 months ago. My doc placed 2500 grafts in the front third of my scalp. I’m seeing some good growth but it’s still pretty thin. Is it fair to say that I can expect another 50% growth at this point? Your feedback will be very much appreciated…

Block Quote

Of course, knowing what you look like would help. Your doctor is your best source. Generally speaking, growth starts between 2-5 months and then grows at about 1/2 inch/month. Hair comes in “waves” so you should see increasing numbers of hair and length over the first 8 months (at which time you should have 80-90% of the growth).

NuvaRing and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have been on the Nuvaring birth control since January. Prior to that I was on the patch for 2 years. I started noticing thinning hair in March. First thing I noticed was a bald patch! Since I have a history of underacive thyroid and am on Levoxyl, I figured my thyroid was messed up. It wasn’t. It was just recently that I thought the Nuvaring was to blame. Went to a dotor or specializes in women’s hair loss. He said it could be caused by switching from patch to ring. He said I shouldn’t stop ring or switch to pill because that could make things worse. HELP. My hair loss gets worse every day. I am 38 and have been completely checked out. All blood tests came back fine. What should I do? Should I stop ring? Should I stop birth control all together? Or is that more risky? Please help me.

NuvaRingDespite the fact that your hair loss was due to medication changes or thyroid problems or other undetermined medical conditions, female hair loss is very difficult to treat or stop. Many women who are going through menopause will also notice some degree of hair loss. With respect to treatments for hair loss, there is only one medication proven to work for women — Rogaine (minoxidil), though its effects are minimal and you do not get drastic results.

I do not recommend that you stop taking your prescribed medication on your own. You need to discuss this with your doctor. The NuvaRing is a flexible plastic ring inserted into the vagina that releases progestin and estrogen over 3 weeks (then you must remove it for a week). Birth control methods like the pill or the ring or the patch can trigger hair loss.

Shock Loss from Female Hairline Lowering Procedure? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 23 year old female considering having my hairline surgically lowered. What I am wondering about is shock loss with this type of procedure. How often does this problem occur and how much hair is usually lost when it does happen? Are there any factors, besides female pattern baldness, that increase the risk of this side effect? Also, do you recommend using Minoxidil to lessen the possibility of fallout, and is it safe if there are no signs of FPB? (The label says not to, but doesn’t say the exact reason why.)

Thank you for your time!

There are no published numbers of the shock hair loss risk after a hairline lowering procedure. This may also depend on the surgeon who performs the surgery and his/her expertise with it. This is a question that should be reserved to the doctor who may be doing your surgery, asking for his/her experience with shock loss and the surgery.

Assuming (worst case) that hair loss occurs, it could be caused by just the manipulation of the hairline and if it did, it should return. If it is caused by too much tension at the suture line, it might not return. Experienced surgeons know this and rarely put much tension on the suture line.

You should also be well informed about other options such as hair transplants to lower the hairline. I do not believe minoxidil will have a significant impact on shock loss.

Is It More Difficult to Try to Gain Muscle Mass If I Take Propecia? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,

Great blog! It gave me all the information I needed to go ahead with a transplant. I had a transplant performed about 13 months ago. I had about 7500 hairs done. My current age is 33. The results are truly spectacular, I really can’t believe the before and after pictures :)

Since the operation I have been on propecia and have also been on a stringent weight loss & gym/cardio/weight training sessions 4-5 times a week. The good news is that I have lost weight, just not really increased muscle mass. I have definitely got a decreased libido from propecia although I am sexually 100% functional.

My questions are centred around gym/testosterone/muscle growth and libido.

  1. Because propecia suppresses testosterone, am I swimming upstream by trying to put on muscle ?
  2. There are many gym supplements that include testosterone that claim to help in building muscle , increased sexual desire etc etc. If I take this will my hair start to fall out?

Thanks for creating such a good resource on the net!

  1. Propecia does not suppress testosterone. It decreases the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In theory it should slightly elevate testosterone levels. I believe you are misinformed about Propecia and its effects on muscle mass.
  2. There are no supplements that I know of which are proven to build muscle mass other than weight training and exercise and a good balanced diet. Furthermore, there are no legally obtainable supplements that contain testosterone. If there is a supplement that artificially increases testosterone levels, you do risk more hair loss from androgenic effects of the drug.

Losing Hair Around Scar from Car Accident Years Ago – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

i have a scar above my hair line from car accident, but am slowly losing hair around it from shock i guess. it’s been 3 years now and i’m getting concerned that the scar will become visible if the loss continues. any experience w hair transplants over or around scar tissue?

Block Quote

The ‘acute’ hair loss impact, when it occurs, usually happens in the first few months. Any change beyond that is not directly related to the trauma, but the hair loss could be permanent. In other words, your hair loss is probably not related to the accident.

Generally a hair transplant into scars caused by an accident, face lift, or brow lift is a common procedure and very successful done in my practice. You can send me a photo for a confidential consultation. Please reference this post when sending.

Hair Loss After Malaria – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 23 yr old male.till about 5 months back my hair density was fine .but it has really come down now.2 months back i had an episode of malaria for which i took artesunate and primaquine following which my hair loss has just gone up.i occasionally have dandruff problems.but i have no family history of balding.what could be the reason.

Block Quote

MalariaSometime a major stressful event (such as malaria) can trigger hair loss, but the hair usually grows back within a year. You may also have male pattern hair loss (even if it does not run in your family history) There is no way to tell you what is causing your hair loss without a physical exam, detailed history, and miniaturization study. The medication (artesunate) for treating malaria is known to cause hair loss.

At 20 Years Old, I’m Worried Propecia Will Stunt My Genitalia Growth – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,
i have read just about every post, but my question has not been given a solid answer.

I am 20 y.o., and i still cannot grow a full beard, and i am not sure that i am completely done developing. i have terrible genetic hairloss on my hairline. i was prescribed proscar to be cut into fourths, but i am extremely concerned about haulting or stunting my development. blood tests show that i have slightly high testosterone, but i am very nervous of stopping my gentalia growth if it is not full developed yet, and my facial hair etc. please help me out because time is of the essence! Thank you doc!

(would you suggest waiting a year to be sure?)

Some men just do not ever grow beard hair. There is nothing wrong here — it is just how you are. Finasteride will not stunt your growth or genitalia growth (see also, Finasteride Impacting Body Growth?).
