How Can I Tell If My Hair Loss is Genetic or From Poor Diet? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Drs.,

I am 25 years old (Male) and have just discovered some hairloss on the upper-back or my head and it seems to be thinning on top as well. On the top and back, the hairloss is not in a circular shape, but mostly it appears to be short lines and patchy. Basically, I don’t know if my hairloss is genetic or from other factors.

For genetics, my father is bald. My mother’s father was not bald (he died at 92 years of age with hair), but his brother (my great-uncle) was bald. So I can see how baldness may have been passed down to me. Additionally, I do have a lot of body hair on my chest, stomach, forearms, legs and lower back (but not too much on the upper-back yet). I read that the genetics that promote bodyhair growth promotes baldness too.

For the other factors, I don’t eat meat and my diet usually consists of fruits and vegetables, with minimal breads and dairy. I am worried that my hair may be thinning from lack of Zinc or Iron. I have the white spots on my finger/toe nails and some slight cracked skin on the corners of my mouth (I read that this is a Zinc deficiency from the internet). Additionally, I workout a lot, some lifting, but I am mostly an endurance athlete. Also, I am a law student and am very busy and broke; basically I am very stressed out at the moment (and the hairloss thing only adds to the matter!)

So my questions are: (1) how can I tell if my hair loss is genetic or from diet/vitamin deficiency; and (2) if it is the latter, can the hairloss be reversed with supplements or change of diet?

Any help you could provide would be much appreciated; this is a very stressful event in my life and I find myself breathing very heavily just thinking about it or seeing myself in the mirror (I don’t know why this is, I can’t really help it). You may also post this question to the blog if you’d like, but I must ask that I remain anonymous. I would not like you to post this paragraph (you can post everything up to the numbered questions above).

Thank you very much.

Dietary cause of hair loss is almost unheard of in the United States even with the poor diets we keep. You would have to be severely malnourished to have hair loss. The most common cause of hair loss in men is genetic (99% or so of cases). Get yourself checked out for genetic hair loss by having your hair mapped out for miniaturization, which will tell you if you are balding from genetic causes. With your family history, that is quite possible.

Did Stopping Rogaine Cause All Body Hair to Change? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello! I saw a long time ago that using minixidil could reverse a chronic telogen effluvium due to use of accutane. Now I have used rogaine and quit a couple of months ago and my texture in the hair has changed all over my body. Hair is losing pigment and the hair is going from dark brown to transparent. Why did rogaine destroy my hair and why is the hair on the rest of my body where I didn´t use rogaine also changing? Will I go completley gray all over and will I go bald? If I got an allergic reaction wouldn´t I reach a peak and the it gets better again? Thank you

When you use minoxidil, it is absorbed by the body through the skin. The more you use it, the more it is absorbed. I don’t know the effects of minoxidil on body hair through the blood stream, but I would not be surprised if some systemic effect occurred with this drug.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any experience with it to address your problem. I would use the Internet to try to find a local doctor (or doctors) who have established expertise with minoxidil and pose your questions to them.

Best Shampoo to Compliment Propecia and Rogaine? – Balding Blog

I just somehow wondering what are the benefits of Nizoral shampoo in preventing hair loss are there any benefits from it, where I know that Nizoral shampoo is just for avoiding or solving dandruff. So just, I want your help Dr. Rassman in suggesting which is best shampoo to drawn for helping or to be harmonious with the drug that I use then for my hair loss (Regaine and Propecia). Thanks for your time.

People use Nizoral (ketoconazole) shampoo and rave about it, but it is a drug used mostly for fungal infections. There is also a Nizoral shampoo designed for dandruff that would work. Generally, I feel that any good quality shampoo works for washing the scalp, but I would not count on it to prevent hair loss.

For more info, please see MedicineNet.com – ketoconazole.

I Counted The Touches to My Scalp During the Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr Rassman,

I received a front hairline transplant back in December of 07′ by a NYC transplant physician. He recommended 2100 grafts for good density. After cutting the donor area and microscopically separating the grafts I ended up with 2168 grafts so they say. During the actual procedure there were three doctor assistants applying the grafts within the incisions(cut by the doctor) in my scalp. One assistant was on the left side the other on the right and one was stationed from behind. I decided to count the number of times my scalp was touched by the transplanting instruments. During the entire procedure I came up with 220 in a period of two hours with a break in between. How could I have received 2168 grafts. A graft consists of 1 -4 hairs. If each graft contained 4 hairs which is very unlikely that adds up to 880 hairs. I think I got ripped off. What is your opinion? I am thinking about taking legal action.

As I’ve said many, many times before, you must have a good doctor/patient relationship before venturing into a permanent cosmetic procedure like a hair transplant. Counting the touches during surgery sounds like you had trust issues.

You had anesthesia which numbed your scalp, so I can not imagine how you could count what I would expect you could not feel. I obviously do not know the circumstances of your surgery, but before thinking of legal actions you should consider discussing your issues with your surgeon. Get a second opinion and let the second doctor look at the transplanted area. A second doctor should tell you if you got what you bought.

I Want a Hair Transplant to Strengthen My Hairline, But I’m Worried It Would Accelerate My Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr. Rassman. Thank you for this website. I visit every single day and gain some comfort in the support here.

I am a 38 yo male with stong family history on both sides of my family. I started to thin in the front/hairline of my scalp at 22 years old, and started minoxidil immediately. After adding Propecia when it came on the market, I feel have done a good job at slowing down the blading process. My father and only brother were both almost totally bald at my age. I am probably a Norwood 3 – my mid-scalp and crown are still quite thick. My hairline has suffered and is loosing ground slowly every year. Temples are receeding and “widow’s peak” is now almost gone. Watching this happen, as everyone here knows, is devastating. I am contemplating having a consult with Dr. Bernstein for a transplant as he is close to me (NYC), but I am concerned that having a transplant to strengthen my hairline may accelerate my recession and compromise what I do have. I also am not sure whether to opt for FUE or FUT since I beleive around 1000 grafts would do the trick for me at this point. After viewing some of the photos on Dr. Berstein’s website et al., where he strengthens hairlines with approx. 900 or so grafts, the results look so amazing that I want to move forward. Any advice?

Dr Robert Bernstein is a great doctor who worked with me for over 10 years. If you were contemplating seeing Dr. Bernstein, go see him and he will be able to give you good medical advice after he has examined you. At 38 years old, with the type of hair loss you describe above, a transplant can be a good option (obviously I haven’t seen you so I can’t say for 100%). Follicular unit extraction (FUE) or follicular unit transplantation (FUT or “strip procedure”) will both work, but the likelihood of less surgeries with the strip technique has its advantages.

Pimples In Recipient Area Months After Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I had a hair transplant 5 months ago. I have been looking after the hair with regard to shampooing, cleaning the scalp well. I have also been using Minoxidil in the form of Rogain in the recipient area the front of my head. Lately the recipient area has begun to itch. I have avoided scratching it…but noticed some pimples. Then while shampooing I scratched a lot, and some pimples burst. There was slight bleeding, maybe pus for the first and only time. It does not itch now, but could this cause a graft to get damaged and lost? thank you for all your help

Block Quote

No, pimples do not harm grafts, especially after 5 months if they are infrequent. You should read your post-operative instruction sheet (if it was provided for you) as pimples can be a common nuisance after a hair transplant surgery. You should have your doctor look at your scalp to make sure that you do not have a spreading infection.

Too Young for Stress Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My little nine year old cousin has a bald spot on the top of her head near the back right side. She has never had this before but a couple of weeks ago she lost her father and I think it might be from stress. Is this possible or is she to young to be stressing? The bald spot is as big as a dime. Is it normal cause she is still little?

Block Quote

I cannot say what your cousin has or why she is losing hair. She needs to be examined by a doctor. Patchy hair loss can be from other medical conditions and in her age group, ringworm would be at the top of that list.

I Cut My Scalp – Will the Hair Regrow? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I shave my head with a disposable razor, I accidentally cut myself on the top of my head, which left an open cut/wound, it started bleeding for about 30 minutes, then stopped. I’ve been treating the wound with Cocoa Butter for the last(2)days. Will my hair grow back in the area that was accidentally cut?

Block Quote

If it is just a superficial cut on the skin, yes, your hair should grow back. If there is a bad scar, hair will likely not grow on the scar itself.

Increased Acne from Finasteride? – Balding Blog

Hi.

I’ve heard about increased ACNE due to finasteride usage. This doesn’t sound completely wrong since we all know what finasteride does to the hormones.

My question is, could increase in T and decrease in DHT in any way affect my early signs of rosacea?

I am not sure. Rosacea is not acne. Are you experiencing acne? If Propecia (finasteride 1mg) does affect your rosacea, would that cause you to stop using it? Moreover, acne probably is a very rare side effect that you may not even experience.

Maybe you are over thinking this whole thing and losing sight of why are you are (or will be) using the medication? Please consult the doctor who is prescribing your Propecia and get his/her advice. For more information on rosacea, please see The National Rosacea Society.
