Hair Loss InformationRogaine Is Growing Hair Where Hair Never Grew Before – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 42 year old male and my hairline began to recede about 3 years ago, primarily on the sides. In addition, the hair in the sideburn area began to thin as well.

To combat this I decided to go to a medical hair treatment consultant 8 months ago. They suggested hair transplants of about 1000-1400 grafts, but I could first try the Propecia & Rogaine combo. I opted for the latter.

After about a month I noticed a huge difference in hair loss. I went from seeing dozens of hairs on my pillow and on my hands when washing my hair, to just a few here and there. At the 6 month mark I began to notice small peach fuzz hairs along the hairline which had been smooth before. Now I am beginning to get hair where hair did not grow before in the lower temporal and side burn areas. Instead of a horseshoe area it is shaped more like a triangle.

My question to you is, will this peach fuzz hairs become thicker? Also, is the hair that was never there before an anomaly?

Lon Chaney Jr. as Wolf ManIt is a known side effect of Rogaine (minoxidil) that it will grow hair on other parts of the body, possibly from systemic absorption. When the drug was first developed it was used as an antihypertensive and the side effects were not detectable in women treated systemically with abnormal hair growth on the face and elsewhere.

I can not answer your question directly, but you may be unusually sensitive to this drug’s side effect (of hair loss). Wait it out or stop it. If it continues to grow hair, make sure it is in the areas you want to or just stop it.

Rogaine Foam vs Rogaine Liquid – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Is Rogaine foam really better than liquid?

My doctor suggested I try Rogaine foam because it’s supposed to be more effective. But it seems to me that most of it ends up on my hair and not on my scalp. I had been using 2% women’s generic minoxidil for heredity hair loss and find it easier to apply directly to my scalp with the dropper, particularly because I have long hair that’s still relatively dense. Would the foam still deliver more effectively in my case? If liquid is as good, is there a 5% alcohol base for women? Does it really matter if it’s Rogaine brand vs generic?

Many thanks for your expert opinion.

It probably doesn’t matter which one you use, but applying it twice a day is important and higher concentrations (5% vs 2%) is more effective. I have heard that the foam gives better absorption, but that may be the technique used. Ask your pharmacist about 5% with an alcohol base. Name brand is the same as generic, as far as I’m aware.

Propecia Has Killed My Sex Life! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I used to be highly sexually active up my entire life up until I started taking the propecia six months ago. I’m ready to throw in the towel with taking the propecia. I wanted to hear your thoughts on it first. I haven’t noticed any difference in hair growth, seems to be exactly the same as it was when I started, but I read in places to give it a year before nixing it. If that’s the case is there anything you recommenend to counteract the propecia and increase the sexual libido to the way it was before, besides viagra. Something to take daily.

Speak with your prescribing doctor. With your doctor’s awareness, you might reduce the dose to 1/2 pill (0.5mg) or even 1/4 pill (0.25mg), as some finasteride is better than none in the fight against hair loss. I would want to know more about your sexual problem before I would throw in the towel, so your doctor may give you more insights. If this does not solve the issue, it becomes a personal choice and if it were me, I would take balding over giving up sex (personal choice).

AskMen.com has an article up about foods that are claimed to increase libido. I’m not going to vouch for the validity of these, but with such gems as, “The Aztecs called the avocado tree ahuacatl or ‘testicle tree.’“, I don’t see how you could possibly go wrong! It might be more to do with how the avocado fruit looks when it grows on the vine, rather than what it does to your genitalia, but my Aztec is a bit rusty and I have to rely on AskMen to steer me in the right direction.

Itchy Scalp After a Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello i just want to ask you a question, i had a hair transplant about 4 months ago but lately i have been getting a itchy scalp and when i itch it, there are alot of flakes that come off. What could this be?

Healing can produce itching. You might consider applying conditioners that are made for dry skin and see if this solves the flaking problem.

I’m Scared and Nervous About My Upcoming Hair Transplant Surgery! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr Rassman . i’m really confused going in for a hair transplant. i have booked a session but am not sure yet. they say “when in doubt- wait” should i wait or just close my eyes and jump? do we really get whats promised? why am i so so so damn scared? is it natural? are HT really worth for common man or only for celebs? should i wait for technology to get better or few more people to get it done?

going through this site i have become a big fan of your work. i’m 27 yr old going for a transplant. i dont look as bald as people who normally go in for a hair transplant. i read about your take on ’shock loss’ post hair transplant. i dont want to take any propecia or finasteride as my wife and i are planning to start a family. is this a big risk i’m taking going for a HT now because of ’shock loss’ possibility? is it worth the risk?

Fear of the unknown is natural, but one of the things that your doctor should be doing is educating you enough to manage this decision. A good decision today will be a good decision tomorrow. You should get another opinion if your doctor isn’t providing you with all of the information you’re seeking. Absolutely do not rush into something that you think you’ll regret down the line. Make an informed choice.

I posted this list of links a few months ago, but they’re important to read. For more information on doctors — what to avoid, how to find a good one, what some don’t want you to know — see:

Hair Loss Information » Finasteride and Hermaphrodites – Balding Blog

Theoretically, how much finasteride would we have to consume to equal the amount those tuber-eating hermaphrodites ate?

I think that the answer to this question has never been quantified. I would guess that it would be hundreds of times the dose, but I really don’t know. A very interesting question, but one that I just don’t have an answer to.

For those interested, a couple years ago I wrote a post about genital abnormalities in babies exposed to finasteride — Proscar Warning Label and Possible Birth Defects.

Facial Hair Transplants – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Please send me more information about transplants, hair to face. tell me how the process works and if that really works and in how much time it takes. i need to know the average price. send me back an email as soon possible thank you.

You can transplant scalp hair to your face, but you must have similarity in the hair, because it will come with its characteristics. If your hair is fine and your beard it coarse, there may not be a match. Meet with a good hair transplant surgeon and discuss the issues, including his/her fee schedule.

Anti-Nuclear Antibodies (ANA) and DUPA – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Doctor, when a patient have DUPA, his/her ANF (Anti-Nuclear Factor) is positive? I have no balding parents nor relatives (until the 4th generation above myself), but I think I’m suffering DUPA and it began just after a heavy stressing period

Block Quote

The diagnosis of DUPA (diffuse unpatterned alopecia) is made by mapping out your hair and scalp for miniaturization. A good examination is critical. Hair loss in men comes about for four reasons:

  1. Genes
  2. Male hormones
  3. Stress (you seem stressed)
  4. Time (the longer #1-3, the worse the problem will become)

To avoid confusion, ANF and ANA are the same thing (see Wikipedia for more info). I am not familiar with a positive ANA factor as a participating cause of DUPA. Conditions like DUPA can occur with a variety of autoimmune diseases of which some of them may have positive ANAs.

In the News – Intercytex, Still at Least 5 Years Away – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Seems Phase II of Intercytex’s studies on hair regeneration have came back positive. The important part is here:

“The new technique involves extracting dermal papilla (DP) cells, the basic cells responsible for hair growth, from a sample of only about 100 hairs from the back of the scalp – the area where hair usually continues to grow despite losses in other areas. These cells are then multiplied many times over in a special patented culture before being injected back into the scalp in their millions, stimulating the formation of new hair follicles or rejuvenating those that have stopped producing hair on the top of the head.”

I thought your readers would be interested in this update. Granted, there is still at least 5 years of tests ahead.

IntercytexThank you for the heads up! A number of people sent this link to me yesterday, but I was traveling and didn’t get to post it until now. The article says that the results will be available next year, and I’d love to see them.

Hair Loss InformationWill Alopecia Areata on the Body Mean It’ll Appear on the Scalp Too? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

If a person has alopecia areata on his legs, will they most likely show signs of it in their scalp or can it be just isolated to certain areas of the body?

Block Quote

Alopecia areata can be found in many body parts. Most of the areas can be localized and there is no way to determine if it would move from your legs to your scalp. Visit the National Alopecia Areata Foundation for more information.
