Hair Loss InformationVery High Estrogen Levels After 4 Months on Propecia – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi there!
I’ve been suffering from side effects from propecia. However, after 4 1/2 months it worked very well for me. I had some bloodwork done and my estrogene lvl was HIGH above range (2x the maximum). Is it possible that not the reduction of dht, but the raise of estrogens (which we all know that can be caused by propecia and which may lead to effects like gynecomastia) and not the reduction of dht is beneficial for the hair? And do you think i could have success with a lower dose finasteride together with a hormonal balance supplement like “DIM” to reduce side effects? Or is it to dangerous for a guy like me (i’m 19, you saw that i reacted quite sensitively to hormonal drugs). thanks

You need to discuss this with your prescribing doctor, of course. Possibly a lower dosage (1/2 dose of Propecia) will have less impact on your estrogen levels. The impact of Propecia on estrogen appears to be as an antagonist and the body has feedback mechanisms that may very well be what you are observing.

Clarify About Folliculitis Decalvans and Hair Transplantation – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

In your post here you say: “This is your worst case scenario. I have had 3 such cases over my years in practice.”

Can you clarify what you mean here? Are you recommending not getting cosmetic surgery if the disease is under control? Or, are you just saying that as a general warning of what could happen if one did get cosmetic surgery? Have you only had 3 cases of this disease to treat with a hair transplant?

My areas are I guess you could say small, but they feel like they are the size of a baseball on my head. Right now, only one area is really noticeable. How long should one wait, to consider the disease under control to have any type of cosmetic surgery? I have not had any activity in a few months now. Three doctors have recommended that because my areas are “small” a doctor may be able to just remove the scared area and fuse my scalp together. Is this a viable option?

If the areas are smaller, what are the typical prices for hair transplant?

The medical field is not clear about the cause of folliculitis decalvans. It is thought to be an autoimmune disease that presents like an infection of the hair follicles, but it does not respond to traditional treatment. The disease can be aggressive and destroy many hair follicles and badly scar the scalp. Hair transplants into this area may likely fail and may reactivate the disease (bad news when this happens). I always want to know if the benefits will significantly outweigh the risks.

The decision to have another surgery within less than a year from a previous episode may not be a good decision, but you and your doctor are in the best place to make that determination. I haven’t treated you, and I couldn’t make any recommendation without examining you at the very least. Our fees are listed here.

Hair Loss InformationCan I Replace Propecia With an Herbal Remedy? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi..i am a 29 year old Male, i have been using Porpecia for about three years now.. i havent had a sexuall partner in that time because of religious regions. But recently have met someone i like and the few times i have hugged kissed etc afterwards i have had pain around by testicals and few inches below the navel..

I have done some research about propecia and its side effects about loss of erection, low libido etc etc. i am a little concerned that this could affect my sex life and inturn my sperm count. i would be greatfull if you could enlighten me as to what the problem could be and also is there any alternative herbal remedy i can take instead of propecia. i know stopping propecia will make my hair loss increase and since i have been using propecia my hair has grown thicker and better, it really has worked for me. could i even take a herbal remedy and gradually decrease my intake of propecia? in an ideal world i would love to find a herbal alternative and stop propecia all together, please advise thanks..

Blue ballIf you have been on Propecia (finasteride 1mg) for three years already, I doubt that what you have experienced is related to a Propecia side effect. Some doctor prescribed it to you, so check with that doctor and get yourself examined! While side effects may be a possibility, having an erection from sexual excitement for a prolonged period of time can cause pain in the groin (vasocongestion). I believe the lay term would be also known as “blue balls”.

Unfortunately, there is no herbal alternative to Propecia. If you are concerned about the side effects of Propecia, you should consult with the physician who has prescribed the medication to you and come up with plan that may suit your needs. It would be a shame to give up on the benefits of what you achieved by stopping the drug when what you may be experiencing has little to do with the side effects of Propecia. You can read the Propecia prescribing information on the official Propecia.com website.

Hair Loss InformationAbout 30-40 Percent of My Grafts Have Fallen Out Over the Years – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Over the years, I have lost 30 or 40 percent of my transplanted hair. I am a 72 year old male. I first had 300 plugs put in the frontal part of my scalp at age 40. About half of the hair fell out over 10 years. I was told that it was because the plugs were too large and did not get the proper blood flow. I then had 3 FUE prcedures done over a 8 year period in my 60’s. The first two were 1200 grafts each and the the last procedure of 1000 FUE’s was done at age 69.

All total, about 30 percent or more of the these grafts have fallen out and not come back. My hair now looks like it did after I had the first FUE transplant. The doner area still has hair. At first I thought that the doctor took hair from too high from this area but my hair loss has not gone down that far.

Do you know what would cause transplanted hair to fall out and not come back or, is there anything I can do to keep from loosing any more transplanted hair? Could it be that there may be something wrong with my scalp on top of my head? or ?

The first Doctor who did the plugs was one of the first to do plugs. The second doctor that did the FUE’s had been doing follicle transplants for 15 to 20 years and had a good reputation. I was going to ask my doctor about this but the second doctor passed away last year.

Any help or information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hair taken from the back and sides of the head is permanent, but the permanent zone is only 2 1/2 inches high in the back of your had and many doctors years ago, harvested hair that was not permanent with punch excision and the old open donor method of harvesting. I have seem many of these patients over the years with this problem. You are correct that the old plugs have oxygenation problems and they often lost hairs within the plugs in the short term after a hair transplant. About 1/3 of the population lose about 1/3rd of their permanent hair. If this is you, you should see a loss of hair in your permanent zone. This problem seems to be more for people of your age than younger men and it is called senile alopecia. If you have senile alopecia, there is nothing that can be done about it. You might try minoxidil, as it tends to prolong the hair cycle and could prevent the death of some of these hairs.

Hair Loss Information16 Year Old with Frontal Hair Loss – Should He Take Rogaine or Propecia? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hey Doc,

I am experiencing thinning at the middle-front of my hairline, and my doctor has prescribed me Nizoral 2% and Rogaine.

However, after reading your post at Why Do Hair Loss Treatments Not Work in the Frontal Hairline?, I realize that you say “finasteride does work to slow down or stop hair loss in the frontal area, particularly if caught early enough.”

I have caught it early (I am only 16), and am taking every measure I can to control my hairloss. Does Rogaine not help with the hairline? Only Finasteride? I need to gather all the information I can so I can talk to my doctor about prescribing the proper medication for my situation. Thank you so much.

Block Quote

Minoxidil (Rogaine) does not stop the genetic balding process like finasteride (Propecia), so the use of minoxidil may not be the right move for you in the long term. Either medication may help with the hairline, but results have been more consistent in the top of the scalp.

First, I would want to do a mapping of your scalp for miniaturization to be sure that you are actually in the genetic balding process. If I confirmed that and I was your doctor (which I am not), then after understanding much about you, your medical history, your growth history, and doing a physical examination, I might prescribe this drug. I can’t make a blanket statement about prescribing medications to men I haven’t communicated with beyond a single email and prescribing a medication that is generally not recommended for a 16 year would require special circumstances to be considered like where you growth is at this time (height, bone growth, etc..)

Hair Loss InformationI Have Fine Hair That is Getting Finer – Is That Normal or Balding? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

i am eighteen years old and have noticed that my hair all over the top of my head and even on the sides to some degree has become finer. I already have naturally fine hair but it has gotten even more fine, however i still have a full set of hair. Does hair becoming finer always mean it is undergoing miniturization and balding or can it just be naturally occuring with age and not undergoing balding?

Block Quote

There is no clear way to tell without a physical examination and history. If you are miniaturizing rather than going to a finer hair, the regularity of the mapping will tell. Real miniaturization will have variable hair shaft widths while a change to a finer hair will show complete regularity in hair shaft widths. A fine hair can undergo miniaturization.

Hair Loss InformationWhat’s This Fatty Hair Falling Out 5 Days After Hair Transplant? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Doctor,

I had a HT 5 days back and have been shampooing twice a day since day one of the HT. This was advised by the doc anyway. I’m concern that I am having white stuff which look like the graft falling off. It has fatty end on one side and small black point on the other side. Am I losing the graft or just panicking. Thanks

Block Quote

By your description it may be that you are losing some grafts. I would ask to see the doctor who performed your surgery and have that doctor address your concerns. Some people might lose a graft or two, but this has been unusual in our practice because we are obsessive about proper instructions for the patient.

Hair Loss InformationCan Skin and Fat Transplants Cure Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I think that the hair loss is not a problem of degenerating of the hair or a genetic predisposition of the hair to fall, but it can be a degeneration of the skin where the bald area apears. May be a transplant of the hyperderm from other part of the body to the bald area may help the regeretion of the skin and the hair . Or the injection of the fat from other part of the body taken by liposuction to the hyperdermis of bald area may have an efect.

Best regards

The skin has nothing to do with hair loss, unless it is diseased. Transplanting skin would be human experimentation with no back-up clinical trials and skin transplants might very well kill the hair. Fat transplants also will do little to help grow hair.

Hair Character Change Near the Nape of Neck? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’m hoping someone can help me! I am 49 years old and had a hysterectomy 5 years ago and am on HRT. I also had a partial thyroidectomy about 30 years ago and do not take any medication. It has always functioned ok for what I need. I have it checked yearly and all seems to be ok. Here is my problem about 3 months ago I noticed near the nape of my neck my hair was like pubic hair. I got a hair cut and most of it was gone, but now it’s in my bangs!! It is AWFUL!! I have seen about 5 or 6 different hair stylists and they have never seen anything like it! That’s scary. What can it be or what can I do???

Block Quote

Unfortunately, I do not understand what you are telling me. Please send me pictures of your hair from the front and at the nape of the neck where the problems are. I don’t recall hearing of anything like this before.
