My Doctor Said Propecia Wouldn’t Cause Shedding – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi I just got a propecia prescription but I wanted to ask you a question before I started to use it.

I’ve read on the internet that propecia may cause shedding but my doctor, when I asked him, said it wouldn’t. Can you possibly explain further (my doctor said that I was in the very early stages of loss). Hope to hear from you soon! Thank you.

Some people report shedding for a month or so when they start Propecia. We postulate that Propecia moves hair on an accelerated hair cycle and that the shedding that is reported is the result. I am not familiar with any permanence with whatever shedding that occurs (if, that is, it really occurs).

  1. Hello Dr. Rassman,
I had been using propecia for about 2 years(started when I was about 23) and I stopped using it in October of 2008. While I had been using propecia for the 2 years I saw regrowth of hair and ceased losing any hair on my hairline and the results were great. During the first month after I stopped using propecia I experienced no shedding but after the first month I started seeing increased shedding. I started back up on propecia in December 2008(about two months after having stopped using it) and the shedding has continued. I have started to see more loss on my hair line and my hair appears to be thinner. Is this normal when someone stops using propecia and then starts again? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
