Hair Loss InformationDo Older Women Lose Hair Due to the Length? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Long hairI am 58 years old (female) and have been letting my hair grow long – it is now past my shoulders – I have noticed a lot of hair loss when I wash my hair – is this due to the length of my and age? Thank you for your response

We generally lose about 100 hairs per day and if the hair cycle goes about 3 years, then the calculation of a 100 hairs per day is arrived at. The longer the hair is, the more detectable the hair will be as they will stick to your fingers in the shampooing process and in the drain. This goes for any age.

One lost hair on you could clog a drain and look like a handful if it is as coarse as it looks in the picture. As you know hair cycles and grows about a half inch a month. If you are 5ft tall and your hair is 5 ft long (example) then you have a ten year hair cycle and than means that all of your hair should fall out and be replaced in 10 years, one hair at a time. My great grandmother had hair length like yours when she was 110 years old, but she wore it in a bun and washed it a few times a year. It was evident that her length was far shorter than it appeared as the hair tangled and much of it never fell out.

Hair Loss InformationIf I Want My Hair Always Short, Can We Use Body Hair for Transplantation? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr. Rassman. Here is my question. I don’t mind having my hair buzzed or very very short. I don’t need to have flowing locks of hair, so long as there is a shadow/stubble on my head. Do you think that using body hair in conjunction with nape and head hair from the permanent zone could be transplanted onto my head in the design of a norwood 1? I realize that body hair might look strange when grown out, but do you think if buzzed it would look natural?
-Thanks

MarblesI would need to meet you, determine what is driving you, find out if you have all of your marbles, and examine the status of your existing hair. The FUE technique is the best approach and it is your scalp hair which is correct and normal looking.

Ones ability to use body hair is not the issue, but will it do what you want it to do? Body hair has a long telogen cycle and a short anagen cycle which means that out of every body hair transplanted, you might have only 30% of them growing at any one time. The recipient site may have some microscopic (barely visible) cobbling of the body hair ‘skin’ used in the transplant, so you must know what it would look like. First, let’s establish a relationship and let me examine you.

Hair Loss InformationStem Cells, Hair Loss Treatment, and Politics – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I was curious what you’re views might be on stem cell research legislation and how political decisions might impact future progress, since stem cell therapies seem to hold the best promise for a cure to baldness. From what I have read, restrictions placed on research during the socially right-leaning Bush years have set cures back by years. Again, just wondering how you think the political climate can/will affect a cure or better treatments for things like baldness.

Thank you

PoliticsAlthough there’s enough political tension in the news lately to cause me to not want to delve into policy talk, I can avoid this topic fairly easily as I really have no idea about the political climate for stem cells. While it is an interesting question, I don’t even know that stem cell therapies hold the most promise to be first across the finish line in cure development. There’s rumblings from Histogen about their stem cell therapy being available “as soon as” 2013, but it could just be more wishful thinking. I recall people supposedly in-the-know saying, “hair cloning will be available within 5 years” — and that was a decade ago.

Timelines in treatment development are constantly in flux during the early stages and I wonder if some of those target dates are hinging on everything going right on the first try. In a perfect world that might be the case, but the reality is that there is a lot of trial and error and many promising technologies never get beyond the development phase. With all that being said, if I had to guess I’d say better drugs will get us closer to the elusive hair loss cure.

Hair Loss InformationIn the News – British Singer-Actor Will Young’s Experience with Propecia – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the interview:

I love my hair – my barber, Paul, has given me a 50s style with a bit of a quiff. I take Propecia pills for my hair, because I started losing it four years ago. It’s a horrible thing – it’s emasculating and you just feel you aren’t sexy any more. The pills worked and my hair grew back, but I am sure they’ll stop working.

I honestly had no idea who he is, but apparently he’s quite popular across the pond. Wikipedia says he won the first Pop Idol show, which is the precursor to American Idol. Look, I have a tough enough time staying current with all of the US celebrities!

At any rate, I’m sure someone will find this interesting, at least for the fact that a celebrity is going public about taking his hair loss medication and seeing results.

Dr. Rassman, I found out this update from Histogen, what is your opinion on this?

HistogenI know nothing more about the Histogen HSC (Hair Stimulating Complex) than you do by watching those videos. I do give credit to Dr. Naughton for appearing in the videos, but I always worry about market hype and speculation in such announcements. I doubt we’ll see it move through the pipeline as quickly as hoped, but we can all keep our fingers crossed that I’m wrong.

Hair Loss InformationHair Loss During and After Illness – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

a month ago i was very sick from pneomonia, fever of 105 f. i was taking high doses of ibuprofen (800mg) and antibiotics. while i was sick i noticed scalp hair and eyebrow shedding. a week after the illness i went to the dermatologist, the dermatologist told me that the hair loss was related to my illness she said that it will go back to normal. its been a month and i still losing scalp hair and eyebrow hair. my hair loss is moderate.

Is it normal to lose hair during illness and continue shedding hair after i recover from the illness? Thanks for the time.

Hair loss from physical and emotional stress can be temporary, but it can take months for recovery. Usually it takes about one year. I am assuming that you are a female. If you are a male, a return to your pre-illness state may not occur if your genetic balding process was triggered.

Hair Loss InformationFinasteride Transdermal Patch? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

It occurred to me that there is no reason that the finasteride clock has to be based on a 24-hour clock. I work for JPL and we use an elongated day in order to plan rover activities on Mars. This means that the days are longer than 24 hours.

I have developed a titre-method that maintains an average daily dose of 1mg of finasteride using quartered proscar pills. Take 1.25 mg every 30 hours as such:

Sunday: 6am 1.25mg
Monday: 12pm 1.25mg
Tuesday: 6pm 1.25mg
Thursday: 12am 1.25mg
Friday: 6am 1.25mg
Saturday: 12pm 1.25mg
Sunday: 6pm 1.25mg
Tuesday: 12am 1.25mg
Wednesday: 6am 1.25mg
Thursday: 12pm 1.25mg
Friday: 6pm 1.25mg
Sunday 12am 1.25mg

But why go through all the trouble? Why hasn’t anyone developed a transdermal patch or implanted finasteride device to main a constant titre? Is this hard to do?

Block Quote

ClockI commend you on your scientific reasoning and approach, but I must point out one flaw: human beings are not computers and can be somewhat lazy in nature. We have a hard time keeping to a set schedule no matter how simple it may look on paper. Can you remember to brush your teeth exactly at a certain time? Maybe it would be a different story on Mars, but it’s hard enough to get someone to take one pill just once a day. Compliance is the issue at hand. One more thing which may be a bit more important — the half life of finasteride is about 4 hours. To maintain a constant level, the presence of the drug will deteriorate on a minute by minute basis so you might need to actually take 0.125 mg per hour or 0.00209 mg per minute. Try that for a compliance model.

A transdermal finasteride patch is a good idea, but there needs to be money, clinical trials, special drug formulations, and pharmacokinetics to make that work. Who will be willing to put up that research and investment when the cost of Propecia itself (in a simple pill) is cost prohibitive for many men?

Hair Loss InformationI Can’t Get an Erection After 2 Weeks on Propecia – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr, please respond to this email I am in desperate need of help. Im a 21 year old with a rapidly receding hairline. I was prescribed propecia and and took it for 2 weeks. I know it seems impossible but after a week on it I almost completely lost my ability to get an erection, both during sex and masturbation. When I finally get one it is extremely weak and doesnt last long. This has never in my life been a problem before. I’ve been off the medication for 3 weeks and the problem has not resolved itself. What can I do?

Block Quote

I can understand the desperation, but I highly suggest you go back to your prescribing doctor to help manage the problem. Sexual side effects occur rarely (1 to 2 percent), and many men can manage the process with their doctors including reducing the dose, or by stopping it to study what happens when the drug is withdrawn. Many times this side effect will go away over a month or so. If your libido is there, then drugs like Viagra may help while you try to work through the problem with your doctor.

I realize the Internet is filled with strange side effect stories. The strength of some of the most prolific campaigns to predict loss of libido or erectile dysfunction can become highly suggestive for the young reader of these bulletin boards.

Hair Loss InformationClinic in UK and Greece Called NHI, Claiming to be Pioneers? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

The following article from a hair transplant clinic called ‘NHI CLINICS’ based in athens, please can you give me your opinion of the ‘about us’ section of their website.

Block Quote

After I started New Hair Institute and called it NHI, various other shops began springing up to capitalize on our marketing and status in the industry. Claims that they are us are false and their use of our brand (NHI) is in violation of trademark laws, but I’ll leave that to a lawyer. Again, they are not affiliated with me (Dr. Rassman) or New Hair Institute and any suggestion that they are shows the nature of that organization. They are making claims that are simply not true.

Hair Loss InformationPreferred Topical Hair Loss Treatment – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

what do you prefer in MPHL (male pattern hair loss) in topical solution? Please also tell me the percentage that you recommend for its treatment? And also for how long its therapy has to be taken.

Thanks. Waiting for your reply.

Block Quote

For a topical solution I recommend 5% minoxidil, which should be used twice a day. However, Propecia (finasteride) is the best treatment if you are actively balding, but that is a daily oral pill. If you wish to maintain the benefits from the treatment, you must stay on the medication forever (this goes for Propecia or minoxidil).
