Hair Loss InformationWhich Association Site is Best for Finding a Hair Transplant Doctor? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am looking into finding a doctor to discuss my plan of attack for hair loss, and i was wondering what is the ISHRS International society of Hair Restoration Surgery? Is finding a doctor off of that website reliable as finding one from the American hair loss association website?

Block Quote

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) website lists doctors who are members of a learning society. The American Hair Loss Association (AHLA) is a similar site. You must understand that any doctor can be a member of these associations and societies as long as they pay a yearly membership fee. These societies do not have the power to enforce or regulate a doctor’s practice and skills, and the hair restoration/hair transplant field does not fall under the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

In the United States, there are 24 approved medical specialty boards that are overseen by ABMS, a not-for-profit organization. Certification by an ABMS member board has long been considered the gold standard in physician credentialing. To be ABMS board certified means that the physician has undergone formal educational and clinical training at a medical institution after earning their medical degree, and has successfully passed a level of competence via written or practical or oral examinations.

Since hair transplant surgery is not a part of the ABMS, there can not be any physician that is board certified as a hair transplant surgeon. This is mainly because there is no formal training or credentialing in hair transplant surgery. You read that correctly — there is no board certification in hair transplant surgery! There is no standard curriculum. There is no oversight or direct review of the quality of the work being done. Unfortunately, there is no ABMS sanctioned facility to enroll and learn hair transplant surgery. To date, the only way to learn how to perform hair transplant surgery is to read a book, attend a seminar, or become an apprentice to a private practice hair transplant surgeon. Even ABMS board certified plastic surgeons do not receive training in hair transplant surgery as part of their formal training.

In the mid-1990s the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) was formed by a group of hair transplant surgeons to create an organization that could independently certify hair transplant surgeons. But still, the ABHRS does not monitor a doctor’s training quality and once the testing process is complete, they do not have any authority to enforce any form of discipline. In states like California, doctors are not allowed call themselves “board certified” if the only certification they have is from the ABHRS or other non-ABMS approved boards. They must qualify which board they are claiming.

So to answer your question about which site is best, well, I don’t have an answer to that. They’re all pretty good resources for finding doctors in your area, but you need to do your own research to find the doctor that can provide the results you want. The real test for finding a good surgeon is outlined here on our Selecting a Hair Transplant Doctor section.

Does Closing a Strip Scar Cause the Crown to Be More Visible? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Does the crown stretch when closing a FUT scar?

Hi there – First off I would just like to thank you for providing this excellent resource. I just have two short questions related to FUT scars:

1) Firstly, I know you have answered this in the past with hairlines, however since the crown is within inches of the incision site above the prominent bone, does it slightly move/stretch downwards towards the incision site once the scar is closed?. For example… I have some thinning in my crown but im lucky in the fact that it doesnt dip low at the back so its not very visible unless looking from above my head. If I had a strip procedure would this thinning crown be more visible from the back because the skin has been pulled down to close the strip wound?

2) Secondly, I believe avoiding strenuous exercise is recommended for about a month after the procedure to avoid scar widening, but is general head tilting and looking downwards in the weeks after surgery ok in terms of putting stress on the scar?

I would be most grateful for any response you have for the above questions. Kind regards.

Strip scars placed in the true donor area in the back of the head should not impact the location or the size of the crown area. Strip surgery takes up laxity that is there at the time of the surgery. Bending your head should also not impact the crown area.

I have never been sure why we tell the patients not to lift heavy weights. If there is a pull from the muscles, it comes from the trapezius muscle, which inserts below the scar at the base of the skull. I still tell the patients not to lift heavy objects, but I am not certain there is any value to the advice.

Would You Let a Man With Long Hair Work in a Professional Setting? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman!

Thought I’d ask an off topic question.

How do you feel about men with long hair in a professional setting? Would you allow someone to work in your office with long hair if it were neatly kept and groomed?

The reason I ask is I am a 21 year old male with long, well shoulder length hair. And I have been told to get a professional job or career, the common consensus is that i will have to cut it off. I was just wondering as to what your feelings were on the matter considering you are in the hair restoration business it would seem hypocritical in some ways to not let someone capable of growing long hair actually have it in your office, then again you are a professional in a very professional setting I presume so maybe you would have reservations against it? Any thoughts?

By the way I obviously don’t want to cut my hair off, and am a huge fan of your blog and professional opinion. Thanks 🙂

Prejudice comes in many ways. I am not a bigot. You would be welcome in our office as an employee if we were looking for a hire. Long hair is not a problem for me.

I Switched to Generic Proscar And Saw Libido Effects – Can I Take Anything to Counteract This? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi there, I am 25 years old and have been using proscar tablets for roughly a year. A few months ago i switched to a a generic brand called finasteride which is the same strength (5mg). I had not had any side effects at all until the past few weeks where i have noticed my libido is severely lacking compared to what it normally is and my partner has noticed a decline for the past month and a half.

I am a little worried as i have read a few stories where people have not regained there sex drive or proper erectile function years after stopping the drug. Is it possible that i stop and i do not regain my normal sexual appetites and functions? Also can i counteract this with something like horny goat weed or another libido building drug?

I dont have much of a bald spot yet as i caught it in time. Mostly just the sides of my forehead are receding. How long does it normally take to lose the hair once stopping. I would really appreciate your advice as i am worried i have done some irreversible damage. Thank you.

The generic 5mg finasteride pills should be the same as the name brand Proscar. You didn’t say what dosage you’re using, but only 1mg is proper treatment for hair loss. If you’re taking the full 5mg pill, that is a prostate treatment.

I am not an expert on horny goat weed extract or other herbals that have inconsistent dosages. If you are having libido problems with the finasteride, speak with the doctor who prescribed it. You might try halving the dose or even quartering the dose by taking it every other day, or even every 4th day. This is something you and your doctor can discuss.

If you have erectile dysfunction (ED), you can consider Cialis or Viagra, which are prescription medications. I don’t know your medical history, but you must also consider that your ED may be unrelated to any drugs.

I’ve Been in Denial About My Diabetes and I Think It’s Causing My Hair Loss! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr.
I’m a 20 year old male and a type 1 diabetic. I’ve been type 1 for 5 years since 15. Since diagnosis, I have never taken care of myself, at all! my blood sugars were terrible for 5 years (denial of diabetes) and my hair is receding also.

I was wondering if constant bad blood sugars would cause hair loss?

Block Quote

The most important thing here is to take care of yourself.

At 20 years old, it wouldn’t be surprising if your genes were just as responsible for your hair loss as your diabetes. In other words, you could very well have diabetes along with genetic hair loss. Diabetes is a systemic disease and it can impact all parts of your body if you leave it untreated. See a good hair doctor so that you can find out what is going to happen to your hair and what you are going to do about it.

I Think Some of My Grafts Were Dropped on the Floor During Surgery! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I recently received a hair transplant and while I was in surgery I believe some of my transplant hairs were dropped. The doc had pulled a lot of hair out and another worker was doing something with them for a long time in another room and then when coming back she dropped a glass containing the hair. I could tell something bad had happened but nobody said anything because it was behind me and I couldn’t actually see it. I overheard someone saying she was cleaning them but the doc ended up pulling more hair out of my head. I figured by asking it wasn’t going to affect my outcome so I didn’t say anything. Do you think these hairs were lost or could they have been saved and used?

Block Quote

You can suffer from infection or hair death if the grafts remained on the the floor for a period of time without being hydrated and kept wet. There no absolute cut off time limit but I am just giving a generality here. It probabaly also depends on how dirty the floor was. Mistakes can happen but there are appropriate steps to take if there was contamination (such as thoroughly rinsing / washing the grafts). Ask your doctor! Trust should be the foremost foundation between the patient and surgeon.

Can I Stop Taking Propecia and Continue with Minoxidil? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am 21 with genetic hair loss.

I am taking propecia and minoxidil 12.5% + Azelaic Acid. If treatment works after, can I stop propecia and carry on with minoxidil 12.5% + Azelaic Acid?

Block Quote

As I’ve noted before, if you have any results from Propecia (finasteride 1mg) and stop taking it, you’ll see those results reverse. I’m not sure how long you’ve been using these medications, but I hope you talk to your prescribing physician before adjusting your treatments.

Even at the rather high 12.5% strength, minoxidil doesn’t maintain the benefits of Propecia (and vice versa). This is usually why I recommend starting with one medication and then adding another later, so you can get a better idea of which drug is giving you the best benefits. If you started both at the same time and decided to stop taking Propecia, you’re gambling that your visible results are just from minoxidil.

Hair Loss InformationI Have Been Treated for MRSA and I’ve Lost 1/3rd of My Hair! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

(female)
I have been treated for MRSA for over two years. The worst is on my scalp. This was not in the form of boils but big patches of infection containing pus and scabs. I have lost most of the top 1/3 of my hair leaving me with large patches of red skin. At present I have a two inch square of raw skin on top of my head. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you

Block Quote

The best advice I can give is to seek medical help from your dermatologist.

You need to treat the MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) for obvious reasons, and since I’m not sure what your treatment path has been thus far or what your doctor has noted about your hair loss, I am not really in a position to provide much help. Your doctor can drain the infection or prescribe an antibiotic.

Hair Loss InformationCan Anything Be Done to Reverse Hair Loss from Years of Hair Braiding? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’m a black 41 years old African American female with receding hair lines which resulted from many years of hair braiding. What can I do to reverse this condition.

What you’re experiencing is called traction alopecia. This occurs with continuous pulling on the hair over time. Unfortunately, hair transplantation is the only solution for this problem that I know of.

So Could There Be Birth Defects If I Get Someone Pregnant While Taking Finasteride? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear dr rassman
I have currently been researching the side effects of Finasteride online, on one site it stated that your sperm while using finasteride may effect your partners health, it was not very clear on the subject, perhaps you could shed some light on this for me?

If my partner was to get pregnant while I was using finasteride is there a chance of birth defect? She is currently using birth control and we are not planing to have another child yet. And I have not started using the drug. If I were using finasteride and wanted to have a child how long would it take to get out of my system to ensure healthy baby development.. Cheers

For personal medical questions, you need to speak with YOUR doctor – don’t just search for information online that can be erroneous or confusing.

In general, as long as your partner is not taking finasteride or handling finasteride herself, there is really no risk of birth defects. You can take finasteride while trying to conceive and there should be no issue. If you are still concerned about it, the simple solution would be to stop taking finasteride.
