In the News – Cancer Advocacy Group Creates Bald Cartoons to Help Kids with Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

Popeye, Garfield, My Little Pony and Snoopy: some of the world’s most famous cartoon characters are getting a very special makeover in an effort to help kids cope with losing their hair to cancer.

Knowing that hair loss brought on by chemotherapy can make children feel different from others, Brazilian cancer advocacy group GRAACC created a unique campaign called “Bald Cartoons.”

According to the Bald Cartoons website, “Famous cartoons from all over the world have gone bald, sending out the message that a child with cancer deserves to be seen just like any other child.”

I really love this campaign. Emotional pain from hair loss sometimes gets the best of many young men, and children may be especially affected. These cartoons help show kids that losing their hair due to chemotherapy isn’t something they should be embarrassed of.

If I Don’t Want to Use Minoxidil for Life, Should I Even Bother Starting It? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am female and decided to have an FUE transplant of 1200 grafts just to fill the front centre. I have some existing native hairs there but it was just getting very thin and more and more difficult to conceal.

I am now due to start the minoxidil foam 2%. I was advised i should use the foam once a day in the evening for at least 6 months. I do not wish to use minoxidil for life and would stop after the 6 months. My question is whether i should use it at all if i plan to stop..? is it necessary to use after surgery? Will it cause more hair loss if I stop after 6 months?

Many thanks

You must use minoxidil for life to maintain any benefits you may see from it. If you do not plan to stick with a minoxidil treatment beyond just 6 months, I don’t really see a point in starting it. If you do start and then stop after 6 months, you will lose any hair that regrew from the medication… though it’s not likely you would’ve seen much regrowth after only 6 months anyway.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) to the middle of the head for increased density may have a negligible impact. A reasonable alternative to your surgical plan might be Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP), as it is less expensive and the results are instantaneous. See an example female patient here — Bride-to-Be Received SMP Before Her Wedding to Cover Her Thinning Scalp.

In the News – Kate Teases Prince William About His Thinning Hair – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

Prince WilliamThe Duchess of Cambridge passed a royal milestone today by cracking a joke at her husband’s expense while on public duty for the first time. She suggested the perfect solution for Prince William’s growing bald patch – a toupee made from alpaca wool. “You need it more then me,” she said, pointing to his head.

William, who has teased her mercilessly about her clothes, telling her she looked like a banana in a yellow dress and complaining that a dazzling green outfit was too bright, laughed and took it in his stride.

Reader is Not Convinced That Bulk Analysis is Worthwhile – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’ve seen you mention many times that bulk analysis is a good way to determine if someone is balding and that density should be the same everywhere for a non balding patient.

But I’m not convinced by this – I recently saw a well known hair transplant surgeon and he said that people typically have less density around the crown and temple areas anyway. He didn’t believe in bulk analysis for analysing hair loss.

Today I saw a male child who must have been around 8 years old. His saw was shaved short and sure enough, his temple/corner areas were noticeably less dense than the rest of his hair and this went quite a way back (I suppose to the point where someone might have suggested he was between a NW2 and NW3 on a balding scale if he was an adult).

HaircheckYou may not be convinced of the value in measuring hair bulk, but I am not going to try to convince you.

In a non-balding man, the bulk analysis shows that the hair in the 4 areas we measure (down the midline: front, top, crown and donor area) are all within 10% of the measurement of each other. I do not measure the hair at the sides of the head, because that is not where the balding will be. I would therefore possibly agree with you that the side densities are not as high as the midline densities.

Out of curiosity, I will measure a non-balding man’s sides and see if we are both correct.

Hair Loss InformationIs Rogaine Making it Hard to Concentrate and Changing My Head Shape? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi doctor,
I know its a really silly question but I am really obsessed with this issue. I am applying rogaine solution on my scalp everyday since I was 17. I am 23 now. I think I noticed that my head shape have dramatically changed due to the constant pressure. Its getting longer and slimmer and there is a bulge on my head. Is minoxidil or constant pressure to my head causing this situation? And my last question is, does rogaine affect my learning ability? When I apply this product, it retains me to concentrate on my daily issues. And I hardly understand what I read.

Thank you,
Regards

Feeling a “constant pressure” on your scalp doesn’t sound like something that I’ve encountered from Rogaine (minoxidil). I doubt that your head shape has changed, and while the drug does get absorbed your body, I also doubt that it is impacting your ability to learn or concentrate.

You should see a doctor about what you’re describing for an exam, as it could be unrelated to the medication.

Hair Loss InformationNot Hair Loss News – Men with Blood Type O Have a Low Chance of Prostate Cancer Recurring – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, and in 2010, it was responsible for over 28,000 deaths in the US. Now, a new study presented at the European Association of Urology congress in Sweden suggests men with blood type O have a significantly lower chance of the cancer recurring.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), prostate cancer is the second most common cause of death from cancer among white, African American, American Indian/Alaska Native and Hispanic men.

Tokyo Medical University’s Dr. Yoshio Ohno and his colleagues studied 555 prostate cancer patients that had a radical prostatectomy.

The article goes on to say, “After following the patients for an average of 52 months, Dr. Ohno and his team found that patients with blood group O were 35% less likely to have prostate cancer recurrence, compared with patients with blood group A.

This is a good pick-up. Most of us know our blood type, so this might be some good reassurance for those with type O blood.

Are FUE Scabs Changing Color When They Get Wet? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,

12 days post FUE, I wet my hair, put conditioner on for 15 minutes, and then rinsed and shampooed my hair to start dislodging crusts. Though the scabs on my scalp were black, it looks like lighter color grafts/scabs are coming out.

Am I dislodging grafts which may have become swollen with water, or is it the scab which becomes lighter in color after wetting?

Block Quote

Yes, the scabs will turn white if they become waterlogged… but at 12 days after surgery, you should not have scabs. That tells me that you were not instructed in the proper post-operative washing routine. I would ask your surgeon for some aftercare information.

My patients are usually without scabs the next day.

Hair Loss InformationMy Young Son Has a Large Scalp Scar from Surgery – Will Hair Regrow There? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My 8 year old son has a big scar on his head from one ear to the other due to head operation. Can hair grow on on that area? What are his options? Thanks

Block Quote

I don’t know what kind of procedure was done, but usually scar tissue won’t regrow hair on its own. Hair transplants into scars from surgery work well. If the scar is narrow enough, Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) would probably work. The two in combination will certainly solve the detectability issue.
