Scabs and density in frontal hair transplant

I want to know why there are so many scabs covering my grafts. I can’t see the density that the surgeon put in. What advice can you give me?

These are questions you should be asking your surgeon. Scabbing occurs because of bleeding around the grafts and/or leakage of a serous fluid around the grafts that contain fibrin which form these ‘clots’ or scabs. Once they get set up (about 2 days) then they shouldn’t be removed aggressively because that will pull out the grafts. I have a vigorous washing technique to prevent this from happening.

Sorry that you didn’t get this information in advance of your hair transplant. because of the scabbing photos you sent me, I can’t read the density. Your surgeon will tell you how many grafts he put in and you can measure the recipient area and calculate the recipient transplanted density.

Scabs After Hair Transplant (with Photos)

So I think I am finally ready to have a procedure, on average, how long does it take for the scabbing to go away? I do not want to go back to work before it does.

The last two patients done this past week had no scabs when they left surgery or on the days following surgery. This is what we expect in over 90% of patients and most can go out into the real world without a hat on. Some people keep the scabs longer. The length of time relates to the:

  1. size of the wound (the smaller the wound the shorter the scab period)
  2. washing skills
  3. patient variables

Two of these are in control of the doctor and the patient, while the third is not controlled be addressing #1 and #2 alone.

Update: Here are 2 photos of a patient — the photo on the left was taken under an hour after the surgery of 1500 grafts was complete; the photo on the right was taken 11 days after surgery. This is the typical post-operative appearance of our patient surgeries. Click to enlarge.

Is This Scabbing of My Recipient Area? (photo)

This does not look like scabbing, but rather two areas of necrosis (death of the skin in the blackened area). The pink color around the larger black area indicates an early infection that is spreading out from the necrotic area. Return to your surgeon and ask about this. If I am correct, you will have a real problem that will require a lot of wound care. This is a terrible complication of a hair transplant.

Scabbing 20 Days After a Hair Transplant

I underwent a mega session of 2884 grafts and was worried on the 20th day as my scabs didnt fall off. So I contacted my doctor who told me to do a gentle massage. I did it but during this massage what I noticed was that there were some scabs that had hair attached to it. Does it mean I have pulled the graft even after 20 days!?

I would like to clear that i massaged with my fingers ( not nails ) in a slow circular motion.

Waiting anxiously for a quick response.

I’m confused. You called your doctor who performed your surgery to ask about scabs, but you’re asking me if the grafts were pulled out? The problem is that you should not have waited until 3 weeks after surgery to do a proper washing of your recipient sites!

Some of the hairs should be falling out on their own with or without scabs, but the roots of the grafts will still be in place, as seen in the article we published in 2006 — Graft Anchoring in Hair Transplantation [PDF file].

Saw Palmetto’s Effect on BPH

I’ve read that there haven’t been many (if any) conclusive studies about saw palmetto’s effect on hair loss. But what about saw palmetto’s effect on BPH? Do you know how effective it is for that? The Mayo Clinic grades saw palmetto as an A (on a scale of A to F) in terms of effectiveness for BPH.

If saw palmetto has weak DHT blocking ability, and it’s just a berry, why not take like 10 pills a day (instead of the usual 2)?

The impact of saw palmetto on prostate problems has a lot of history that goes back hundreds of years. The product has been studied, but although there is no doubt an effect on BPH (benign prostate hypertrophy or swollen prostate) at reducing symptoms with difficulty in urination, it does not seem to work on DHT. It has been suggested that its mechanism of action is something other than DHT effects and that is why it may not help in hair loss.

Saw Palmetto vs Dutasteride

Do I need to stop saw palmetto now that I take dutasteride?

Saw Palmetto is a very weak DHT blocker while Dutasteride is a very strong DHT blocker. Yes, stop the Saw Palmetto. Many experts like me, don’t believe that Saw Palmetto works for hair loss at all

Saw Palmetto Video discusses how to use it and personal results

I will qualify this video as it is not based upon good science so take what you read with a grain of salt. A huge number of men use this medication. Some studies show it has some DHT blocking effects and other studies show it has no value.

Saw Palmetto, Seborrhoeic Dermatitis

Hi doctor,

Does Seborrhoeic dermatitis causes thinning of the hair on the frontal and temporal areas or it just causes the hair to fall without thinning? I have noticed an increase in acne production in my scalp in addition to my noise and behind my ears and i am noticing a major thinning of my hair, so i am concerned if Seborrhoeic dermatitis is causes of these side effects. Also does DHT trigger the increase of acne production of the sebum glands, which are similar to the consequences of Seborrhoeic dermatitis? I currently stopped the use of propecia due to a severe sexual dysfunction and I am taking saw-palmetto and monoxidil 5% without any significant positive results but a major thinning all over my head. What is your comment on using saw-palmetto as a DHT inhibitor? Shall i wait till my hair sheds and then transplant some hair instead of taking a risk and play with my hormones? I am in a dilemma please help me. Thanks a Lot Doctors

Young men with genetic balding are best treated with finasteride (Propecia). Saw palmetto does not work for preventing hair loss and contrary to some promotion, there is no evidence that it is a DHT blocker. Minoxidil is less effective in genetic hair loss, but it may work. Seborrhoeic dermatitis does not cause hair loss nor does acne, provided that you do not pick on your hair. Acne medications do cause hair loss. If you get infections, then that could cause localized hair loss unless it is treated by a good doctor.

Saw Palmetto (Questions for a Reader)

Did it do anything for you? Did you get side effects (because it reportedly blocks 30% of DHT, half of what Finasteride is doing)? Is it an alternative treatment? After all, it doesn’t need to be prescribed by an MD, because it is over the counter, so bad side effects would be quite f***** up for something like that. Interestingly, people reported having side effects compared to Finasteride on this sub, which should pretty much unleash a big scandal because, as mentioned, it is an over the counter drug. I can’t figure out if these people actually got side effects or if they are nuts though.

Saw Palmetto is a very weak DHT blocker, and I don’t believe that anyone has had a reversal of hair loss on this drug.
