What Is The Point of Taking Propecia If You’re Going to Bald Eventually Anyways?

I really enjoy visiting the website and reading the wealth of information that is posted on here.

I know dr.rassman has mentioned a few times that if a person is genetically balding their hair has a certain lifetime (example 5 or 10 years) , with or without the use of finasteride, before it completely dies. If that is the case, what is the point of taking finasteride if the hair is going die anyways within 5 or 10 years? Could finasteride prolong the hair from falling out early?

Male pattern balding (MPB) also known as androgenic alopecia (AGA) is genetic. There is no cure. But there are two drugs: Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (topical minoxidil) that can SLOW the process down. In some men it can sometimes REVERSE and grow NEW HAIR! But eventually over time, you will continue to lose hair in the genetic pattern.

If you are rapidly losing hair in your 20’s and 30’s and you can take a medication to slow or sometimes reverse the balding process down for about 10 years, that may be worth it to some people. It is an optional medication with a low side effect profile. The most significant side effect for finasteride (Propecia) is sexually related (erection issues) or reduced sexual drive and it occurs in 1 to 2% of men who take the medication. The side effects are reversible once you stop taking the medication. But there are a subset of men out there who claim that the side effects are permanent. It is very difficult to prove or disprove the permanence of the validity of long term sexual dysfunction, but this is a consideration you must weigh if you take this drug. The risks and benefits should be individually discussed with your doctor.

The following is a LINK of before and after photos of men who took Propecia with great results.

Plugs to Bald (with Photos)

I hate my look. I answered an ad in the newspaper when I was in my early 20s and very depressed about losing my hair. It was not bad then, just starting to thin in the front. The doctor’s sales guy came in and did a job on me, telling me that it was on special and that he would give me 50 free grafts on top of the reduced price and I would never have to deal with the balding again. I scheduled for surgery done the next morning. This was 8 years ago and have hated myself ever since. I did not see how bad they looked until the hair fell out in the front, all within a few months of the surgery. Now I just want to become bald. Can I do it?

My astute readers will notice that this is the 3rd blog entry I’ve made in the past week relating to this very issue (see also: Alas, Bald Again and Years After Transplant, I Want To Shave My Head ), but it is very important to drive home the fact that hair transplants are forever. I know that these deforming surgeries are what most people think that a hair transplant is, but based upon what I see in these pictures, I would expect that you had this 15 or more years ago, not 8. This is malpractice today and I believe even so 8 years ago. The way the doctor unleashed the salesman on you was downright immoral and I would report that doctor, at the least, to the medical board of the state. In California, the medical board takes responsibility to protect consumers against such behavior.

I think that going backwards and becoming bald may not be your best choice, because even if each of these plugs were removed, the scalp skin would then show the individual scars from each excision and the reflection of any light in the room would show the deformity. I suspect that the situation can be improved as shown in these articles and this patient example (see Dean’s Story link below).

You need a good doctor working with you one-on-one who has the experience to address YOUR needs. This requires both a very experienced hair transplant surgeon, one with good communication skills, compassion, and understanding. Then the two of you can work out what your real options are. For those readers who are seeing this scary picture, don’t think that this is the standard of care (take a look at what is the standard of care today in our Photo Gallery).

Plucking White Hairs Causes The White Hair to Spread?

I am 21 years old and I have about 15 white hairs around my temples… I used to have about 3 or 4 last year but a lot of stress over this past year has spread the white hairs. I have been told that plucking out the white hairs will cause for the white hairs to spread. Is this true? Also, are there any spray on dyes or temporary touch up dyes that are available on the market? Any information would be helpful, thanks!

Plucking hairs produces traction alopecia and may cause permanent loss of the hair if you persist on doing it. Plucking hair in one area will NOT cause hair to be lost or gray in another area. You will almost certainly see more white hairs over the years. I would put my money on genetic causes, not stress.

As for hair dyes, you should ask your local hair stylist.

Plucking Transplanted Hairs

If I were to pluck some of my surgically implanted hair in order to achieve a balanced look, would they eventually grow back over time? So if I then decided to get another transplant to balance things out, I wouldn’t regret doing it?

If you pluck out transplanted hair it should grow back just as if you pluck out normal (non-transplanted) hair. However, if you keep plucking out the same hair, eventually it may never grow back, which is what happens with trichotillomania.

Plucking Hair Can Help Treat Baldness

Hi Dr. Rassman, I’ve been a “lurker” on your blog for yrs, 46 yrs old and if I were to guess, a Norwood 3. I’ve been taking finaesteride for about 1 1/2 years, shampoo with nizoral a couple times / week. I started using Rogaine foam for a few months, but at $62 CAD / mth, it was starting to add up. I’m single, confidence is severely lacking as a result of my receding hairline, so dating isn’t really an option and needless to say I’m always looking for options. l almost considered going for a consultation with Hair Club, but decided against it for now at least. I did come across this article and wondered if you had heard anything about it.

Thanks for having this blog, allowing for people like me a chance to see your advice, keep up with any new developments etc.

There was an article on SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN April 9, 2015 Hair Regrowth Discovery Suggests Skin Cells Communicate Like Bacteria
“When a researcher at the University of Southern California and his colleagues plucked 200 hairs from mice in a specific pattern in a confined area—ensuring that many neighboring hairs were pulled—more than 1,000 hairs grew back in their place, including some beyond the plucked region. “
This finding does not translate into finding a cure for male pattern balding or hair loss in humans. in fact, if you continued to pluck your hairs, they would eventually stop growing. The finding in the study does not mean that if you pluck your own hairs, more will grow. It does however give us a new perspective on cell signaling. More research would be needed to see how it can be applied for practical human applications.

To address your concern for hair loss that relates to a lack of confidence or dating: There are plenty of confident bald or receding men where hair loss is not a factor. Of course everyone is different and if hair loss or hair recession bothers you, see a doctor for possible treatment options. Norwood 3 hair loss pattern can be easily addressed with a good hair transplant surgery.

Please help me. I went to a tattooist to get SMP and this is what he did

Many of my friends are asking me what I did to my head?

Unfortunately, SMP is an art form that takes a long time to learn, I have seen many such examples of SMP done by people who should not be doing it at all (sake a look at our website to see what it should look like here: https://scalpmicropigmentation.com. You can go to a dermatologist who has a Q-Switch laser and have these removed to get you back to normal. Then if you are willing to get it done right, visit us.

Please help, I think my hairline suggests that I am going to be bald! (photo)

No, this is a very early maturing process that your hairline is undergoing. Most of your juvenile hairline is still present. If your hairline fully matures, it will take on a V-Shape. The hair you lost is just the corners which will eventually go up along with the center hairline. It is just the part of getting older and wiser.

Please compare minoxidil in the oral form and the pill form

There are two forms of minoxidil available on the market, one is the topical which comes in many strengths, the second is the pills which was originally used for the treatment of high blood pressure. The pill, which is rarely used for hair loss in the US and can bring down the blood pressure of the person taking it but is more effective at treating hair loss than the topical application of the drug. In some countries, minoxidil pills are used as the primary treatment for genetic hair loss.
