How do you pick a hair transplant surgeon that is not hit and miss? (from Reddit)

Hair transplant from tressless

As a hair transplant surgeon, I feel compelled to respond. If you do your research (Yelp, Realself) and demand to meet one-on-one with the doctor’s patients, the hit and miss issue disappears. We have held what we call Open House Events every month and have been doing this for 27 years. At these events, former patients come to help prospective patients understand the process and see their results. Talking and meeting with former patients have no substitute for building confidence in your choice of surgeon. At these events, we also have live surgeries for prospective patients to view and speak with the patients undergoing the surgery. Many times men bring their wives and girlfriends to these events making it even more beneficial. I realize that many of the readers of Reddit are not in Southern California to visit us during one of these open house events, but there are substitutes with good phone consultations and calling references, which are made available for newcomers.

Phytocyane

I am 23, female, and have been losing quite a bit of hair the past few months likely due to stress. My middle part became noticeably wider and my scalp pretty visible. I began using Phytocyane treatment for the hair loss (it is for hair loss due to stress, hormones, pregnancy, fatigue), which consists of shampoo, and 12 serum ampules to be applied to the scalp 3 times a week.

Once I began a week ago I noticed over 2x as much hair loss than before treatment, so about 100 strands in and after the shower compared to about 40 before treatment I asked Phyto if this was normal and of course they replied that it’s normal to lose more hair in the beginning of the treatment as it is cleaning out the pores and any dead hair caught in the scalp will be released. I feel they are supposed to say this to encourage you to continue to use their products, but I want to know whether this is likely true. I’ve read a lot of reviews and most people had experienced an immediate decrease in hair loss. It’s scaring me to lose this much hair. What is your opinion?

Thank you so much.

Phytocyane’s main ingredient appears to be grapeseed extract, which is presently being pushed for a variety of medical problems. In my opinion, you are wasting your money and hopes on a product that cannot deliver. It is in a nice packaging and they have a nice website to look credible, but in the end it is just an expensive lotion (among the other products in their line).

It’s probably good for your hair, but certainly will not regrow it. I see nothing listed in the ingredients that is a proven hair loss treatment. There are no regulatory agencies to police and validate these claims and since it is a free economy, someone is getting rich!

Sometimes you just need to go with your gut, and if you’re losing even more hair since starting these products and the online reviews don’t seem credible anymore, your answer should be obvious. It sounds like you’re asking me to vouch for this product line, which is something I won’t do. For women, there’s unfortunately only one FDA approved hair loss treatment (minoxidil), and if you see hair loss following pregnancy and a bout of stress, your hair could even regrow on its own in time.

Physicians Less Likely to Order Cancer Screening Late in Day or Late in the Week

This is a very distressing article. It suggests that you are getting better medical care in the morning and towards the beginning of the week. It seems that when you get your examination at the end of the day or the end of the week, many things just don’t get done and maybe get skipped.

Physical Activity Immediately Before a Hair Transplant Procedure

Hi Dr. Rassman:

I’m having a 3000-3500 graft strip procedure next Monday. I am an avid runner and long distance walker. I understand I should wait until the staples are removed to resume these activities. Is there any issue with running or walking for exercise in the days immediately before surgery?

Thanks

I don’t believe you can hurt anything by strenuous activities prior to your hair transplant surgery. After the procedure however, you should take it easy for at least a few days. You should completely avoid any activities that can increase the tension on the skin edges for several weeks after your hair transplant surgery. Running does not impact donor wounds, so I generally tell my patients that they can run a marathon after a week if they want. I gave that advice to a man last week and he told me that if his hair transplant allowed him to run a marathon, that was better than he could do prior to getting it. He was not a runner. Ha!

Better check with your doctor, because he/she might not agree with me.

Physical Activities That Can Cause Hair Loss?

Hi doctor Is it normal for the left side of your hair line to be higher and thinner than the right? Also besides genes what are some physical activities than can cause hair loss?

Hair loss, when it occurs, is often not symmetrical. If you’re seeing the left side of the hairline creep higher than the right, there’s nothing unusual about it.

There are no activities that should cause hair loss. Unless you count pulling on your hair as an activity, but I think you mean something like sports or hobbies. You need a good examination to determine if your hair loss is genetic and then map out the status of your hair loss (see Mapping Your Own Scalp for Miniaturization).

Once I see that, I can tell you your birth hair count and your donor supply for your lifetime if you should elect to get a hair transplant at some point when you are older.

In this particular young man, he had a Class 5 pattern of balding heading to a Class 6 from what I could see in his photos. The metrics obtained from these simple pictures, tell me that he will have enough hair to handle any balding pattern he develops. Those of you reading this should consider a phone consultation with me and also sending me these photos so I can give you an analysis as I did for this young man. This is a critical part of a Personalized Master Plan for lifetime hair loss.

Pictures say it all, right? The reports on the value of pepperment oil seem to do better than minoxidil at least on the mice. The reddit posts seem to suggest that it has great value for patients who use it as well

Photos – Day After Hair Transplants

I have thin hair in front. I am in the public eye and can not take off more than a day or two. What will I look like after a hair transplant?

To answer your question, I took some pictures of a person who is 50, who had a hair transplant (1,046 grafts) and came in for a hair wash by us the next day. He has enough hair to cover the transplants. Good washing will guarantee, as much as possible, that any scabbing is removed. With the use of medications, we can keep swelling on most people to undetectable levels. He can go out in public the day after surgery without any real detection.

The photo on the left was taken before his procedure — the photo in the middle and the photo on the right are 1 day after.

Update: Oops, I originally posted the wrong patient photos with this entry. I apologize for the confusion. The correct photos are what you see above.

The hair is longer so the impact I believe we are seeing is due to longer hair. Hair grows about 1/2 inch per month so if the December photos has a 1/2 inch of length and the January photos (30 days later) and 1 inch of length, the hair mass will have doubled.
