Percocet and Hair Loss

Percocet causes your hair (and eyelashes) to break and fall out. I’m 56 and have always had TONS of hair. “Enough for three people,” my stylist always commented. I had been on Percocet for 4 years due to severe Hip Dysplasia and my hair was coming out in little chunks. My beautiful, long eyelashes kept breaking until it looked like I barely had any. I thought it was because I’m in my 50’s. I had a full hip replacement last year and am finally off the pain meds. I’ve been off them about a month and, to my astonishment, my hair is growing back as thick as it used to be and my eyelashes are long and beautiful again! Those rotten pills! I don’t know how I would have gotten along without them as I was in severe pain, but I’m glad I’m off them now. My hair is recovering, so the hair loss doesn’t seem to be permanent.

Give your hair time and eat healthily. It should recover. Good luck!

People Wonder What a Hair System (Wig) Looks like (Video from Reddit)

Reading the comments are about as interesting as the video. Most men don’t understand how a hair system works and this picture shows it well. Good hair systems are not inexpensive. Over the years, the cost for such hair replacements can run over $15,000. That is why so many people offer hair systems. The glue that attaches to the hair system you see here pulls out hair, so many people who use then become more bald over time from the traction of the glue that pulls out hair.

People that had FUT

What does your scar look like and what length can you hide it under? Like I usually get cut 3 on the sides and back, I have dark hair.

I had three hair transplants with strip surgeries. I can cut my hair to a one cut, and have no visible scar. Most people get just a line scar but 5% do get wider scars easily treated with Scalp Micropigmentation or wearing your hair slightly longer. Half of the hair transplants we do are with strip and the other half is with FUE and few patients complain of the scar as we are now using staples for the closures and they remain in for 3 weeks until the wound is healed. A minor inconvenience, I am told.

People on Forums Swear by RU58841

I hear about a substance called RU in a bunch of the forums on the internet. Many of the people using it swear it helps the hairline. Do you have any on this at all?

I assume you’re referring to RU58841, which I still don’t know much about besides that it is an experimental anti-androgen out of Europe. I mentioned it earlier this year in a post, but I can’t comment on forum members swearing something works or doesn’t work. I prefer published proof in peer-reviewed medical literature, which I haven’t seen yet.

Why do people lose hair with chemotherapy?

The hair is a rapidly growing organ, possibly among the fastest of body well (outside the intestine). Cancers are also fast growing so when the cancer is treated with Chemotherapy, the treatment targets fast growing cells. That is why many people who get this get stomach and intestinal side effects. Hair loss occurs in the same way. We have written about the Cold Cap to prevent hair loss with chemotherapy and it is an important tool, review posts here: https://baldingblog.com/?s=cold+cap&x=0&y=0 and you can review the many posts on the subject.

Some people only partially regrow their hair if they lost it. This may be caused by permanent changes in the life of the hair follicle which is frequently limited anyway. When a hair follicle reaches the end of its life (from genetic balding or even old age), the cells undergo apoptosis (cell death). The Chemotherapy may damage the hair cycle clock limiting how many cycles the hair goes through. We know that hair goes through aging in all of us and we often see changes of hair character (from a coarser hair to a finer hair) or graying (as we lose the pigment cells that give our hair color.

People Guessed I Was 20 Years Younger After I Had SMP Done

A 55 year old male patient had a complete Scalp MicroPigmentation of the scalp done. He has changed his hairstyle from long hair with a balding pattern to a shaved head.

He sent me this short email that I wanted to share:

About a week after my procedure, I was at a party where I met a number of guys that I didn’t know. Sometime later in the evening, the topic of conversation shifted to age, and we did the “guess my age” bit. Guesses of those who were in the 50 year old range were pegged between 45-60. When it came to me, they all guessed I was in my mid 30s! Totally made my day.

Awesome! I’m glad your day was made and I’m pleased that you’re enjoying your new look.

Is it possible that finasteride can make hair worse?

Should you be shedding in areas of your head where you weren’t shedding before?

You must keep in mind that genetic balding is the enemy, which is a progressive process in ALL men- so when you see new shedding, think progression, not finasteride as the cause.

Penis Structure and Finasteride

I was thinking of going on Propecia but found this article: Effect of androgen deprivation on penile ultrastructure

I was wondering why Merck hasn’t mentioned this as a side effect. Is this claim true in humans?

This may occur in humans at doses of finasteride much higher than the 1mg dose level that is the therapeutic dose for hair loss. The study doesn’t say how much finasteride was administered or the frequency of dosing, but as the study is in rats, I wouldn’t know how it could apply to humans. Merck likely hasn’t mentioned it as a side effect, because it hasn’t been proven to be a side effect in humans. I don’t know how else to comment on this question.
