What is the Cause for My Female Hair Loss?

34y/o female, on birth control, no visible medical conditions that I am aware. Started losing hair about 7 years ago once graduated from college and ended a three year engagemenet under stressful lconditions. Hair loss has progressedandrecentlynoticed the amount of thinning as I had a head full of thick hair. Now thinner, and every night shwer, there is always some hair in drain. Ihave tired multivitamins, Kevis, Advecia, and Hairgenesis….the vitamins helped but still falling out. I dont knowwha tto do….I am 5’2″, weight about 115-120 pounds. I was addicted to laxatives at one time but have since recovered. Could I have a vit. deficiancy? hormone problem dueto birth control? My thyroid checked out fine. I dont want to be 40 and bald. I have no children, no otehr medications.

It is hard to know exactly what the cause and solutions might be via email without first meeting you. My suggestion would be to please read my many answers to women with hair loss. I discuss the medical work-up required for women, plus the causes for it. A good doctor to check you out and a good hair doctor will go along way to help you focusing upon your hair loss problem. I am sorry to sound evasive, but hair loss in women is a difficult differential diagnosis.

What is the best way to repair a hair transplant scar?

I live in the eastern PA area. I want to get this repaired and I figure an FUE session would be worth trying. I’ve tried SMP and it didn’t work well. Is there success with FUE into scar tissue? Are there any experiences both positive and negative that can be shared?

I’ve visited a Long Island doctor’s office before and I’m likely to go back there. I haven’t done much research in the last 2-3 years with doctors so are there any others that I should be considering? Is FUE about $20 a graft still? So I’m thinking maybe 200 grafts in the scar could work.

FUE into the scar leaves a scar colored background and the hairs often grow kinky or curly, certainly different than the surrounding donor area hair. The best treatment for a donor scar is Scalp Micropigmentation, see here: https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/gallery/scar-covering/ If you had this and it failed, then go someplace where it is done well. Please note that almost the entire scar disappears when the operator knows what they are doing in this link.

What is the area I circled in the photo

Hairs grew in the area I circle before and now there are no hairs there. Does that mean that no hair will grow there again?

Although the area where I placed the arrow previously had hair growing out of it, maybe it was a one hair follicular unit and the hair went into the Catagen phase of the hair cycle and disappeared. If that were the case, it would come back within a month or two.

What is the Accelerated Hair Loss After Stopping Finasteride?

I am a 51 year old male with some recent thinning in the vertex area, but otherwise a I have a full head of hair. I don’t seem to shed many hairs. In fact, after combing my hair, I may see only 1 or 2 hairs in the sink and never any hairs on my pillow when I awake in the morning. I have recently procured a prescription for Proscar, but I’m hesitant to use it because of some of the side effects mentioned. In an earlier answer to someones post, you mentioned the fact that if one was to use Finastaride, then discontinue it’s use, that subsequent thinning would occur at an accelerated pace. Does this mean only the hair you may have grown as a result of proscar use, or your overall hair in general? I’m currently trying grape seed extract, multi vitamins and Sawpalmetto. I’m also considering just letting things take their natural course and joining the rest of bald headed America.

Thanks for your anticipated response

In my opinion, grape seed extract, multi vitamins, and saw palmetto will not significantly affect your hair loss problem. Bald can be beautiful. There is nothing wrong with being bald.

With regards to finasteride (Propecia or Proscar), it may not cure hair loss, but it is the best medication available to slow down hair loss or even grow some hair back. If you stop taking this medication after many years, you may experience what I describe as “catch up” hair loss in which you lose all the hair that grew or stayed as a result of the drug. In short, your hair state will be at a point if you had never taken the drug in the first place.

What is my hair loss pattern on Norwood Scale? (photo)

I have marked up the areas that are thinning that may lead to complete balding. The forelock has a different genetic code and may remain in some men so this man has an evolving Norwood Class 5 pattern that could eventually lead to a Class 6 pattern as many such patterns do. You have at this time a persistent forelock that may eventually be lost along with the bridge area defined in the photo as well. If you are lucky and the forelock lasts until you are 35, it will hold a frame to your face for many years after

What is my classification of balding?

You have a Norwood Class 4 pattern of balding. In time, the crown balding may move forward and the frontal recession may move back. Only time will tell

What is more important when your blood pressure is up? Systolic or Diastolic readings!

Systolic hypertension (?140 mm Hg) was associated with a greater risk (hazard ratio per unit increase in z score, 1.18) than diastolic hypertension (?90 mm Hg; hazard ratio per unit increase in z score, 1.06). The investigators found similar results with the lower threshold of hypertension (?130/80 mm Hg). (Taken from Medscape)

What does this mean? It means that both numbers have to be normal to reduce your risk of heart attacks and stroke. Your doctor can regulate it!

What is magic about delaying surgery until I am 25?

If you are 19, neither the surgeon nor you know what is going to be your final hair loss pattern so decisions made at 19, mean (1) possibly using up your donor bank of hair, (2) having a hair transplant every year as your balding pattern progresses which is does in many young men. When a man reaches the age of 25, their hair loss pattern is often evident and knowing this allows the surgeon to make a Master Plan not only for the hair loss you have now, but for the future prediction of your hair loss from the diagnosis of your future loss pattern. Donor grafts must be saved for the future loss predicted by the surgeon at 25 years of age?
