The recommended application for minoxidil is twice a day. I suppose 12 hours apart is best, but that may not be practical to fit into your day.
Many years ago I had a dairy farm with nearly 150 cows. If you think about nursing mothers, they feed their babies every few hours and get their best milk production based upon the need to keep up with the close feeding schedules. For my farm, I figured that we would get the best milk production if we milked the cows every 8 hours, but I could not afford to do that and few workers would cooperate with me on this idea. Most of my farming neighbors started milking at 7am and then at 3pm so that they could have breakfast and dinner with the family on a reasonable time schedule that coordinated with their childrens school schedule. By spacing the milking 16 hours at night, the cows filled up with milk for overnight, which in the world of ‘biologic feedback’, they were telling their bodies to slow down milk production. As a compulsive person and to solve the problem, I decided to milk the cows at 3am and 3pm, but because of my heavy surgical schedule I just could not do that. Instead, I woke my wife up at 3am so she could milk the cows until 6am at which time the day crew came in and took over. What I’m saying is, life is full of compromises. If you can’t get that perfect “every 12 hours” between minoxidil applications, then yes, 8 hours apart (like the dairy farmer) should be fine.
And for the record, I am presently divorced.

Before writing to you i tried finding a similar case to my problem but i couldn’t. i have asked my doctor this question but i wanted another opinion to make sure that everything is going well. My question is that i have had my transplant (strip method) done a week ago, and i am feeling tightness in the donor area , where it feels a lot tighter to turn my neck and look at the left side than turning my neck to the right side, is this a normal feeling or should it feel equally tight on both sides? and if it is normal, how long will it take to be moving my neck normally and freely?
It is normal for the area behind the head (where the strip was taken) to feel tight. It may actually feel tighter than it is. When I (Dr. Rassman) had transplants, it felt tight in the donor area, but in a few weeks, it felt less tight and more mobile. Bending the head and turning it may be an indication of tightness, but in a few weeks, it should substantially lessen.

The recent Journal Lancet, published a study revealing that the obesity epidemic is increasing the terrifying appearance of many cancers in young people. According to the article, there is an increase in cancer of up to between 50-80% in the following cancers: Uterine and esophageal, colon, gallbladder, kidney, liver, pancreas, upper stomach and brain membranes. For obese women, there is a 7 times increase in uterine cancer. Six of the listed cancers are rapidly rising in people ages 25-49 and the incidence is rising at a 2-6% rate yearly. There is a suggestion that reducing ones obesity may reduce the risk of some of these cancer.

I am 23 year old female and have been losing about 100 hair everyday. I had undergone a thyroid goitre surgery when I was 20 years i.e in 2004 and had lost tremendous amount of hair then due to hormonal imbalance. I have been taking Thyronorm ever since to supplement hormones. After that my hair loss reduced a little bit but never stopped. I have noticed and increase in my hair loss since past 10 months. I got my thyroid tested 8 months ago and it was normal.I have also started taking iron pills since past one month. I am extremely worried about my situation and don’t understand what I can do. I have heard that there are certain oils in hair that make hair follicles really small and hair never grows back. Is that true? Are there any tests that I can perform to figure out the actual reason for the loss? what medication would you recommend me in my case?

It is normal to lose around 100+ hairs a day, as about 100 hairs per day are regrown to balance the loss. Medical conditions such as thyroid problems and iron deficiencies are associated with hair loss, but it can still persist despite adequate treatment. There is only one medication FDA approved for treating women with hair loss — minoxidil (marketed as Rogaine).
To my knowledge, the impact of hormones on the size of the hair follicles below the skin has not been demonstrated and that includes oils that are either applied by you or internal to your skin.

I am a 29 year old woman. 5 years ago a number of symptoms creeped up on me (this started 1 year after i stopped ortho-tri cyclen). The symptoms got progressively worse over the years. They included: hair loss, decreased metabolism (irregular bowel movement inspite of high fibre diet), cold intolerance, fuzzy headedness (lack of concentration), depression, dry skin, increasingly recurrent mild yeast infection.
My TSH was normal, so thyroid probs was ruled out. 2 months ago, i went to another doctor who listened to my symptoms and put me on synthroid. He thought i may be suffering from sub-clinical hypothyroidism. All my symptoms (except hair loss) have since compeletely clerared up … (i feel like i was given a new lease on life …and feel normal for the 1st time in years).
I am hopeful that the medication will resolve the hairloss as well, however i am worried since i have a lot of Hair miniaturization all over my head including back , side and top but most pronounced on top of my head and temples and sides. Do you think that thyroid problems could also cause miniaturization and i should wait and see if the problem gets helped. Or should i be starting another regimen…
Also , where can i get the desitometer measuring the progress or worsening of hair miniaturization, to figure out if my hair is improving with thyroid meds or not…

Female hair loss precipitated by birth control pills and thyroid disease in women programmed for genetic hair loss may not reverse. Only time will tell you.
The best place to get your own densitometer is at Radio Shack or a local small electronics shop. Look for something they call a hand microscope which should sell for around $15. Someone other than you will have to do the measurements at the same place each and every time you are examined and plot it out over time, possibly monthly.

I have been using thymuskin a topical shampoo and dropper solution made in Germany by Klett-Loch gmb. The company claims it reduces or inhibits DHT in the scalp, acting as a coating/membrane around the follicules. It is also a synthetic thymus extract/peptide originally from a baby calf, cow but is now synthetic due to cattle health, the German company claims. They say it also acts by boosting the level of thymosin and or boosting the thymus gland which normally shrinks in size. They say it was originally developed for chemotherapy patients that lost their hair after chemo, but soon they say the German doctors who were bald themselves started using the thymus product with success. It is extremely expensive to me @270.00 for a 2 month supply. Does thymosin and or the thymus gland play a role in hair follicule stimulation and or growth? Why did the chemo patients not lose hair when using it while under chemo? I ordered it because I thought with all the products out there, that surely a German company would not lie! It dosen’t suit them based on their history. haha funny. thanks Dr. Rassman
To my knowledge, nothing topical inhibits DHT production on the scalp, though there are some shampoos that claim to reduce scalp DHT. In my humble opinion, it is probably just marketing hype, but if it works as promised, the company can make a fortune selling it at any price worthy of putting in the effort. The Thymuskin North American distributor claims the product was sold for 20 years in Europe, but the amount of years a product is available in the European marketplace really doesn’t have any bearing on its effectiveness. The user reports online vary wildly, and with so many Thymuskin resellers and affiliate links out there looking to cash in, it really makes it hard to distinguish what is a real review and what is a disguised advertisement.
The thymus gland does not play a part in hair growth. There is an association between hair loss and the thymus gland in a special type of inherited disease, but that would not point to the use of any thymus extract in the treatment of the normal genetic hair loss that is common in the general population. I’m not sure what T-cells have to do with hair growth or hair loss, but these cells are in the critical path for autoimmune diseases. Again, in my humble opinion it is just marketing hype, but I will be glad to be proven wrong.

Actually I already use Minoxidil and My hair just growth, but I have to stop it because my blood pressure decrease 90/50 (normally 110/70). So, I have to find another way to growth my hair.

You must be cautious about all the information available on the Internet. Not everything you read is true, and even subtle truths that can be massaged to fit a certain agenda. It seems you need to see a knowledgeable doctor who can discuss all the options. To date, only minoxidil and finasteride (Propecia) are approved and proven to work for androgenic alopecia (AGA) or male pattern balding (MPB). Some people can not tolerate minoxidil, because it can drop your blood pressure.
