On Finasteride for 12 years (photo)

This man had some minor recession on the right corner of his hairline (marked with arrow) which reversed on finasteride. The drug held his hairline for 12 years showing that he was sensitive to the benefits of finasteride.

On finasteride and hair getting worse

I’m a 22 year old male and when I started taking fin I felt like I was getting some results in the first 6 months but now it’s clear that it’s been getting way worse. There are days where I forget to take it for sure so do you think maybe the inconsistency is what is messing me up?

If you are committed, then you should establish a plan and stick to it. If the plan is not working, you and your doctor should revisit the plan

On finasteride and got very horny!

I then got horny, had a full erection and was able to masturbate 4 times in one night. Is that a good sign that the med might be okay?

Working better than most people. On occasion finasteride can increase the sex drive in men.

Omega-3 Oils Boost Attention as Much as ADHD Drugs in Some Children

LONDON (Reuters) – Omega-3 fish oil supplements can improve attention in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) just as much as drug treatments, but only in those whose blood levels of omega-3 are low, trial results showed on Wednesday.

Researchers in Britain and Taiwan who conducted the placebo-controlled trial with 92 children said their findings suggest a “personalized medicine” approach should be adopted in this and other psychiatric conditions.

“The omega-3 supplements only worked in children that had lower levels of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) in their blood, as if the intervention was replenishing a lack of this important nutrient,” said Carmine Pariante, a professor at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London who co-led the trial.

He said the work sets a precedent for other nutritional interventions and could be the start of “bringing the benefits of ‘personalized psychiatry’ to children with ADHD.”

ADHD is a common brain condition that affects an estimated 3% to 7% of people worldwide. Symptoms can include problems with attention and impulsivity that cause difficulties in academic, work and personal relationships.

In this study, published in the journal Translational Psychiatry, researchers from King’s and from the China Medical University in Taiwan conducted a randomized controlled trial with 92 children aged 6 to 18 with ADHD.

They were given either high doses of the omega-3 fatty acid EPA, or a placebo, for 12 weeks.

Results showed that children with the lowest blood levels of EPA showed improvements in focussed attention and vigilance after taking the omega-3 supplements.

Standard treatments for children with ADHD include stimulants such as Ritalin, known generically as methylphenidate, which can improve levels of concentration and focus in ADHD patients.

Pariante’s team said that while the amount of improvement in attention and vigilance from methylphenidate is generally 0.22 to 0.42, the effect seen in children with low levels of EPA in the trial was larger – at 0.89 for focused attention and 0.83 for vigilance.

But in children with normal EPA levels, omega-3 supplements made no improvement, and in those with high EPA, the supplements had negative effects on impulsivity symptoms.

The scientists warned parents should not give their children fish oil supplements without checking first with a doctor, and stressed that omega-3 levels can be checked with a blood test.

Olive Oil and Aloe Vera on Scalp

I’ve read about testestorone which produce DHT causes hair loss. I would like to know if lifting weights causes hair loss. I lift weights(heavy) almost 5 times a week. Also, I check out some website and they recommend using olive oil and aloe vera which I took from my back yard. Applied it on my hair and massage it for about 30 minutes. So far it help with getting rid of my sometimes smelly scalp and my dandruff problem. I would like to know if that really work. Thanks.

I know that aloe vera is the magic plant that cures almost everything. It is used extensively in the tropics where it is grown as a herbal solution to a wide variety of skin problems and I know that it works in many. Reading that it helped your dandruff is not a surprise. Adding olive oil is a wetting agent, which should stop flaking. It would not benefit you in the treatment of hair loss, however. For more info on aloe vera, you should check out the Wikipedia entry.

Oh, and weightlifting does not cause hair loss.

Who Is the Oldest Man You Saw with a Full Head of Hair? (Photo)

My grandfather (on my mother’s side) died at the age of 102 with the same amount of hair that he had when he was 5 years old. My great grandmother also came from the area below and lived to be 114 years old. Its all in the genetics!

How old do you have to be to have a Class 6 or 7 pattern?

My dad went NW7 in his early-mid twenties. I’m 19 right now and just using minoxidil and nizoral. I’m adding dermarolling soon. I have diffuse thinning, not too bad at the moment (but since I’m light skinned with black hair it’s still a little visible :/) but I really hope minoxidil stabilizes it for at least a couple years

If you take after your dad, you will see the pattern before you are 26. Sorry, but that is the probable truth

Can I fix my high hairline?

I’ve had an abnormal hairline from birth. It is at least one and a half inches too far back. I have to wear wigs and extensions to cover it all the time. How can this be fixed? Can my hairline be brought forward like everyone else in my family? I would love to be able to wear my hair back without bangs for a change.

High hairlines are common in women and men and moving them down is basically a surgical procedure. With progressive balding, moving the hairline down is best performed with hair transplants because if more balding occurs more transplants can solve the problem. For most women the hair transplant fix is permanent and they don’t have to worry about progressive balding so that (in most cases) a reverse brow lift type of surgery works best.

If you still have any questions, I highly recommend you look at some of our other postings on this subject.

Oily Skin or Acne a Factor in Male Pattern Baldness?

Is having really oily skin or acne a risk factor for Male Pattern Baldness? My dermatologist didn’t see any miniturization. I’m not shedding. I’m 22 years old and there’s no visible recession. I still have a teenage hairline. But I do have really oily skin. My dad is a Norwood Class 7. I figure if I was going to be a class 7 I’d have recession by now. What do you think?

Acne is common in young men, and really, it’s common with any man with oily skin. That being said, there may be an association, but not a cause and effect (balding does not produce acne). Likewise, oily skin and acne will not cause balding. The acne problem is more common in the young patient, when hormones seem more volatile. I am sure you remember the days in high school when the zits seem to pop up at the worst times. In these situations, the appearance of the beard in the young man compounds the problem.
