I’ve been using topical finasteride (Morr-F) for a period of about 8 months. 2 months ago, I had a blood test for a physical examination. Everything was fine, except that I showed elevated liver enzymes (ALT/AST) and just barely met the criteria for prediabetic fasting blood sugar. I repeated the test last week and my ALT/AST were even worse.

I’m a healthy male who doesn’t drink often at all (sometimes no drinks in a month, never more than 5 in a month). I exercise regularly, have no history of diabetes in my family, and eat an ovo-vegetarian diet with adequate protein for resistance training. I’ve recently found studies indicating that 5-AR inhibitors have been shown to interfere with liver function, elevating liver enzymes and interfering with glucose metabolism.

Don’t be your own doctor and get professional advice as finasteride will not cause liver enzyme elevation.

I’m a 34 male. I’m a non-smoker, very moderate drinker, healthy in every respect. I have lost almost all hair on both of my calf muscles. I’m not excessively hairy, but I do have a full head of hair. This hair loss is the cause of some embarrassment. Now, interestingly my father (62) has the same condition, though a lot more advanced. His legs are totally almost bald! My younger brother (32) has no signs of such loss. But like my father he has experience a good deal of head hair loss. I’m puzzled. And help that you might be able to offer me, would be enormously appreciated.

It seems like you have inherited the same gene from your father. The process of apoptosis (cell death) is genetically programmed in hair follicles. See Wikipedia for more on this.

(female) Ok first off, I’m almost seventeen. About a month and a half or so ago, most of the hairs on my eyebrow fell out. It’s only my left eyebrow though, which is strange. I haven’t used any sort of cream on my face or taken any medications except for the occasional ibuprofen which I’ve taken before with no problem. I think I have an idea, but I’m not sure. I got bangs before the eyebrow started falling out and when my bangs started to grow out, I just pushed them to the left. So is it possible that my bangs irritated the hairs, causing them to fall out? I’m not really sure. Since I thought of that, I’ve been trying to bobby pin them back lately because it’s summer and I’m home a lot, but take the bobby pin out when I leave the house because it’s embarrasing and my hair covers it. But they’re still not growing back. I don’t know what to do. Any suggestions?

It is very peculiar that only one side of your eyebrow has fallen out. I highly doubt it was due to your bangs brushing up on them. As it has only been a month, high magnification examination would show what stubble is left and what it looks like. I would be curious to know if you have experienced any specific patches of hair loss on your scalp or on your body. There is a relatively rare condition such as alopecia areata that can manifest in the manner that you are describing. You need to see your family doctor to make sure your thyroid is OK. The most common cause of eyebrow hair loss is when a person picks or plucks it. However it is almost impossible to give you a diagnosis without examining you in person. In mid-feb, my husband was wrestling with a friend in our living room. His friend picked him up and accidently slammed him on the concete floor. My husband’s head hit the floor and he had a huge bump on his head. The swealling went down but he still has a bald spot there. Will his hair ever grow back?

I would expect that the hair will grow back within 6 months (or less) from time of the injury.
