Men actually shed more hairs per day because they have a shorter anagen cycle. Women can grow their hair much longer than men so they lose less per day and regrow less as well. Women can grow hair as long as 3 1/2 feet while men can’t and often grow their length to no more than 18 inches in length. That means that using the formula of 100,000 hair on the head for a typical Caucasian, if the hair is shed after anagen, the women with 3 1/2 feet length hair will lose about 50 hairs per day while the male who will grow to a length of 1 1/2 inches will lose up to 100 hairs per day.

I was on Androgel since august 2018 after being diagnosed at 208 nG/dL. The reason I got myself diagnosed in the first place was because of my high pitched voice and lack of (muscle) development. While I was on TRT, I did feel slightly stronger and my biceps did get bulkier and feel significantly firmer to the touch (and I don’t work out). However, around the turn of 2019 I noticed my hair was noticeably thinner. I had always had a dense forest of hair on my head ever since I remember. That changed only after I started TRT. I quit Androgel cold turkey in January, but the damage was done. My hair kept deteriorating so I got a DHT test: 747.67 pg/ml. (Normal range: 250 – 990)

I then got on Dutasteride for a month, but taking it didn’t seem to help so I tested my DHT again while I was on it: 1110.8 pg/ml.

I have since stuck to Finasteride, and my DHT levels dropped to 590 pg/ml then rose to 990 pgml. My ferretin was measured at 48 ng/ml on a range of 30 to 440.

My hair is worse than ever. I have a noticeable bald spot on my crown and my hairline has receded noticeably. My hair now parts naturally in a very noticeable path, looks like severe diffuse thinning. I started fin in march and mine in June, but my hair is worse than ever and sheds more than 100 hairs daily. Hair is frizzy and curly whereas it was straight before trt. Shed hairs are much thinner towards the bulb.

I wish I never took TRT. My hair was fine before TRT and that was not the only thing Androgel affected. I wish I could rewind time back to last year and convince my younger self not to make this irreversible decision.

Many men think that Dutasteride is better than Fnasteride. Finasteride is 70% effective as a competitive inhibitor while dutasteride is about 80% as effective. However, most people don’t really see the difference from a practical point of view. The drug Dutasteride is not FDA cleared. Therefore, it is not proven to be safe. We know, for example, that Dutasteride produces sterility in some men.

Have you ever seen an elderly man who was bald, had a terrible comb-over, and wondered how a person got there? Well, this young man shows how it all begins. It starts off with a very subtle restyling of the hair to cover the areas of thinning and/or balding. Then, as age takes its toll and more balding develops, the altered styling changes to adjust to the new status of the balding. Over years, this change is subtle every day as the hair loss slowly advances. Sooner or later, however, the bald area becomes so large that the man starts running out of hair styles, so he moves down to the side of the hair just above the ears. The hair 2 1/2 inches above the ears never disappears, so by parting this hair and letting the hair grow long, the hair can be made to cover the entire head. The point is there’s no need to reinforce this belief that everybody needs to have hair. That mentality obviously benefits the hair loss industry. Some guys can’t get over the fact that they’re losing their hair and will go to far lengths to preserve whatever they can. But there’s no shame in being bald and if your hair is a main source of self esteem, I recommend taking steps to fix that because nice hair won’t get you that far in life.

Hair loss has been important throughout the ages. From a historical perspective, hair loss was very common in the cities when TB ran wild. That was why a woman looked for a hairy man to qualify a man as a prospective husband. If a man lost his hair, the presumption was that they had TB and would probably die from it, not living long enough to provide family support for the long term. This created a lot of myths that have stayed with us in one way or another today. It is also imporant to know that the hair restoration business will hit $30 Billion for 2025, now at something like $6+ Billion and the hair cosmetics industry is today over $20 Billion and growing fast to make you WANT to not be bald. This is the power of money today because if you retain the bald look, no one can make money from you, its free!

Somewhere in Central America, there is an indigenous population that does not metabolize testosterone into DHT because they don’t make the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. These people do make testosterone, but they often have ambiguous genitalia and are known as hermaphrodites.
