No, doctors who recommend that number of grafts have an eye on your wallet not your hair. This should take no more than 1500-1800 grafts depending upon the thickness of your hair. This is half of the number you were recommended.
The number of grafts would depend upon the thickness of your hair (fine, medium or coarse). Assuming that your hair is fine, it would take about 1800 grafts to complete this job. If your hair was coarser, then less grafts would be required.?
THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT READ FOR ANYONE WANTING TO HAVE FUE; I wrote this article in the past issue of Hair Transplant Forum (Volume #27, #2, May/June 2017) which I believe defines a very important guideline for determining how many FUE grafts are safe. This is illustrated well in the previous post below. We are seeing doctors from around the world performing FUE grafts in the thousands without understanding the limits of this surgery. The goal for many patients, is to get all of your hair back in a single hair transplant FUE session. But that goal is not reasonable for many patients with FUE especially when the donor density is low like most Indians, Asians, South Americans, and people from the Middle East. Europeans or Russians often have higher donor densities. The article poses a formula the the doctor can use to actually calculate the safe number of grafts for any particular individual. You have a responsibility to research what your doctors are going to do for you, because if you don’t and if your doctor removes too many FUE grafts from your donor area, you will become bald in the donor area, a bad exchange from balding in the front or the top of your head. You must realize what the risks are and if the safe limits of FUE are exceeded. Many patients who end up with a depleted donor area like the previous post, have little choice on how they are to manage their new balding problem as they may become bald in the back of their head. This article addresses this problem and suggests ways doctors and patients can guarantee that the safe limits for FUE are not exceeded.

Donor area depletion occurs when more than 50% of the donor area hair is removed, especially if the hair is fine. Medium weight hair is better for slightly more harvesting with FUE, while coarse hair is certainly better because more than 50% of the donor supply grafts can be harvested. do you know if mtg also known as Mane-Tail-Groom hair products are safe i know that when they first came out it was for men with hair loss but more recently has been used for horse hair, so is it safe for humans to use.
I would doubt that any permanent damage would be done by using Mane-Tail-Groom hair products on your scalp and hair, but it would not be my first choice. When I had horses, they were kept outside and were used more for riding, and I am sorry to say that I did not spend a lot of time grooming them, so I am not familiar with the myriad of grooming products for horses. I asked one of my patients about this, and he told me that this is common family of products used for hair loss and hair grooming in his native Ireland (for people). It is used especially with horses trained for the competitive dressage market in Europe. Many Irishmen liked the results on horses so much that they used it on themselves. When I mentioned this family of products to my female office staff, a few commented that it worked nicely to make the hair glow and shine. There is anecdotal evidence that it may have value for humans, so the final laugh may be on me as I announce my ignorance to all of my readers.

Several years ago, I was treated for testicular cancer. That included 4 rounds of chemo: Bleomycin, Etoposide, and Cisplatin (BEP). Before chemo, I had a nice, full head of hair. I lost all of my hair during chemo. After the chemo, my hair was drastically changed. It was much, much thinner—especially on the top. After a while, I just started shaving my head. I assumed that there’s nothing I could do about it. I did a little searching and didn’t find anything conclusive
Your chemo may have induced genetic balding. You should be evaluated by a hair expert to quantify if you have a reasonably good donor supply left for a hair transplant. Comment by William Rassman, M.D.: I have been prescribing this drug for years. The problems that is discussed below have generally not been seen in most of my patients. Any drug, ANY DRUG, runs some risks when it impacts your body function like hormones, mood, etc… When you take any pill, you must recognize that this is a man made item and although the FDA may clear it for safety and effectiveness, there is no guarantee that you will not develop some unusual problem like the many discussed below by this very knowledgeable person. I felt that this comment was important to make. You should know that I am now taking finasteride and my son has been on it for 15 years and neither of us have seen any problems with this drug in our system.
The fact that this poison is still being regularly prescribed undermines the legitimacy and perceived objectivity of the American medical system and the pharmaceutical industry. There have been plenty of publications that have come out over the decade that have shown 5-alpha reductase inhibitors to be dangerous, even to those who appear to respond well to them, which I’ll link at the end of this comment. I am glad that the FDA was objective enough to deny the approval of these drugs as chemo-preventative therapies – who knows how many lives would’ve been destroyed if they’d been approved for that – and that they decided to finally label the drugs with serious warnings, but it’s not enough.
The risk of full-blown Post Finasteride Syndrome, while apparently low, is not something to dismiss. Additionally, the odds of developing side effects increases with time. These drugs have been shown to chronically lower neurosteroid levels, the most significant of which being allopregnanalone, which is responsible for anxiolytic, anti-depressant, pro-sexual, and other important effects. And as it turns out, DHT isn’t useless after puberty like many people seem to claim. There is no way to screen for who is at risk for post-5ARI syndrome and who isn’t. Even if the odds are low, you’re playing with fire. And many men who don’t develop the condition will still eventually have milder side effects, like a loss of morning erections, weaker erections, lower libido, increased anxiety or depression, etc. all to save a few thousand hair follicles. How do physicians justify this? It’s one thing to prescribe it for a hyperplastic prostate (and even that’s questionable), it’s quite another to prescribe it for vanity. Any physician that considers prescribing this drug for hair loss, as far as I’m concerned, should never be allowed practice medicine again, and should be sued for malpractice and negligence. Clearly they’ve never considered “first do no harm”.
Many physicians’ ignorance of what they’re prescribing is astounding, and the denial of a very real condition when it happens is, at the very least, cruel and pathetic. This sort of science-denial is akin to climate change “skeptics” or evolution deniers. I don’t think I need to explain why this is a terrifying trait to see in a licensed physician. The science is in and has been for years now.

There is a risk with any medication and Propecia (finasteride) is no exception. It is hard to surround the statistics on the permanent negative side effects reported here by this reader. Some say that the negative sexual side effects that are permanent are as frequent at 7,000 out of the millions of men taking the drug. That is a small number, but if you are one of them, it is 100% for you. Every medication has risks and I always inform my patients of these risks and never push any medication on them. Those men with great results from taking the drug will argue with this author, but everyone is empowered to make their own decisions once they know the facts.
Not every complaint about permanent sexual side effects are real. One of my patients took finasteride and reported impotence in 2 hours, before the drug peaked. Although I told him to stop the drug immediately, he refused and said he preferred impotence to hair loss. His call! Not what I would recommend.
