Who Invented the Strip Method?

Did you invent/discover the strip method for hair transplants??

No, I did not invent the strip method in hair transplantation. I do not believe there was an official inventor of it. The surgical crowd moved somewhat together in the evolution of the strip, which was a neat solution to harvesting that became obvious.

When I was learning about the state-of-the-art donor harvesting, I saw some doctors use a large drill and attached from end to end the holes that were used to harvest the plugs. This caused an irregular wound of connected holes that were sewn together. Any reasonably good surgeon could have figured out that an irregular, sloppy wound would be better created by a controlled strip, and that is what the surgeons were evolving towards. So you see, there isn’t always an inventor.

I remember that there were few doing strips when I started doing hair transplants in 1991. Dr. Paul Straub demonstrated the method to me back then. I immediately went to the strip for harvesting, having never used a large drill as others were doing. A few doctors were already using this method, but the art at that time was still about establishing large grafts, not small ones. When I started doing the surgery, I began with small grafts… and made them smaller and smaller, which required more and more of them to get the amount of hair that would make a difference. This refined the look of the hair transplant as we know it today.

White Scabs 3 Months Post-Procedure

Hello
I had a strip procedure done a little over 3 months ago and now Im starting to get a little worried. I have these white scabs in my donor and recipient area, and when these scabs come out, they carry with them 2-5 hairs. This does not seem normal…

At three months you should be completely normal. Most people have no scabs within a week or so. This may be a matter of your washing technique. I have seen men who do not wash their hair properly leaving the remnants of hair and scabs for weeks or months.

White dots from FUE, why?

Yes, dot scars are a consequence of FUE. ALL cuts into the human body produces scars. If your surgeon used a small punch of .95mm or less, the scars are barely visible. Larger punches create larger white dots. Sometimes the scars just stretch and become larger. Fixing it can be effectively treated with Scalp Micropigmentation

White Dots and White Flakes on My Head One Month Following My Hair Transplant

I had a hair transplant surgery since one month and week before (on the 20th of June), my hair is full of white crusts as shown in the photos, they exist everywhere in my hair. They are itchy and annoying. They increase with time. I wash my hair every day with a shampoo but don’t dry it to avoid hurting the grafts. I don’t know if this because of the residual of the shampoo or what. How to get rid of these white crusts please? They are very very annoying. I am afraid they affect the transplanted hair. I need your help please. I tried to contact the doctor did the surgery and didn’t reply. I am sorry for your disturbance.

This is residual crusting and requires a more vigorous hair washing with your fingers and a good shampoo. At this time you can’t harm the grafts so be aggressive.

I have white bumps surrounding each FUE graft that was transplanted. Why is that? (photo)

I fished up a photo from the internet of a patient that had FUE grafts in the frontal recipient area. Two things worth noticing: (1) the grafts are elevated and (2) there is skin in the graft that is as wide as the graft itself.

The skin will survive the transplant and the elevation will produce small, subtle white elevated bump surrounding each group of hair from the recipient area (called cobblestonning) and I believe that is what you may be seeing.

I do this differently than the doctor who did the patient in the photo, as I trim off the skin of the grafts before placing them and then place the grafts flush with the surrounding skin so that these white area are not present in our grafts. Click on the photo to enlarge it.

White Bulb vs Darker Bulb on Fallen Hair

Hey Doc,

What exactly are those white ‘bulb’ sort of things that are at the tip of hairs that fall out? Most of my hair that fall out have that white bulb sort of thing. What are those?

Also, somewhere I read by a noted hair doctor that a white bulb means that the hair fell out in it’s growing phase, whereas a darker bulb meant that the hair was already grown or such. Is that true?

The white bulbs are likely sebum, a remnant of your oil gland that happened to come out with your hair. The darker bulb just came out without the sebum.

Which is Better — Taking 0.5mg Finasteride Daily or 1mg Every other Day?

Hi Doc,
Is there a difference in cutting fin in half and taking .5mgs a day compared to taking 1mg every other day?

I read somewhere that 0.5mg is 80% as effective as a full 1mg dose of finasteride. I can not tell you from direct experience, though. Am I safe to assume that you are halving the dose to deal with some side effect like decrease libido? If there is no side effects at the 1mg dose, stay on it (studies have shown the best treatment for your hair loss will happen at 1mg).

If you are only going to take 0.5mg daily or 1mg every other day, then I’d say that the 0.5mg a day may be better, but frankly that is just a guess.

Which Is Better — Apple Polyphenols Topical or Capsules?

In purchasing Apple Polyphenols what would be more affective topical or capsules? I can’t afford both.

Thanks

There is no documented research on comparison of the topical vs. oral use of polyphenols that I know of. Most research on polyphenols, particularly on procyanidin and hair growth in humans and animals, is done on the topical procyanidin rather than the oral pill.
