Is My Hair Loss Normal?

Hi, i been taking propecia for a month and 1 week, this last 2 week i notice that i lose over 150 a day ( Each morring i lose around 50 hair on my pillow and around 80 in the shower). It been going on over 2 week.
Will this stop and Is this normal for taking propecia? if yes how long will this hair lost last? Do propecia cause initial hair lost?

thanks

A typical person does lose 100-150 hairs per day. If what you see more recently reflects a change in your norm, you may be experiencing an acceleration of your hair loss. The relationship with your taking Propecia may be circumstantial and I would believe that the two are not related, but you can stop taking the drug and see what happens. The drug is out of your system usually in a day or two. If it stops the loss, then maybe there is a connection, but I have never seen that connection in others. If the loss continues, then I would go right back on the Propecia because that is the best hope for you.

There are some doctors who believe that some shedding after starting Propecia or Avodart is due to an acceleration of the hair cycling. See my previous posting on this subject here.

Is My Hair Loss Normal?

Hello there Dr. Rassman, thanks so much for your helpful blog. Here are 2 questions for you that I’m hoping you can help me with. I lost my full hairline (receding in temple area) when I was about 24. It receded for a couple of years and then stopped. I am now 33 and over the last 2 months has started again-very quickly!! It seems I can tell the difference weekly. I am now almost at just a strip in the center and this is quickly disappearing!! Is this normal or may other factors be at play. Also, does a 5mg Proscar pill cut in 4 have the same effect as Propecia?? Thanks for your help again, hope to hear from you soon.

Male pattern baldness is never normal for the young man who wants to be hairy, but it is normal for your genetics. You are probably experiencing further hair loss and it could go through bouts of rapid loss. It is best to visit a doctor for thorough evaulation of your hair loss pattern by using a densitometer or a magnifying video camera to determine the amount of miniaturization that is present. Proscar and Propecia are the same drug, called Finasteride. Propecia is dosed at 1 mg of Finasteride. Many people cut Proscar (5 mg) into 4 pieces equal to 1.25 mg of Finasteride and the only difference is that the dose may vary based upon the size of the cut pieces.

Is my hair growing? I am now 2 weeks after my hair transplant (photo)

The scalp will shed these hairs if you are patient. The spicules of hair that you see will fall out very shortly. I know this because the direction of these hair are very irregular and appear to be ready to fall out. The shedding process is normal.

Is My Female Hair Loss from Ulcerative Colitis?

(female)
i have been losing hair for about 7 years now. i think it has to do with my ulcerative colitis. i started to take biotin and a multi vitamin. my hair is white flakes, itchy but im thinking my hair might be growing back. could this happen? when i was pregnant my hair grew back then after nursing my baby it fell out again. i have seen several doctors and they all say it’s hereditary.

Hair loss in women can be difficult to manage, because there are often many factors involved that could cause the loss (including hereditary factors). Have you had any blood tests done to see if there is any other underlying medical conditions? There is a partial list of those tests here.

The stress from ulcerative colitis could cause hair loss in women who have a hereditary predisposition for hair loss, but there are doctors who specialize in this (I’m not sure if you went to a GP or a UC specialist) that would know more about this than I do. If the hair loss is stress related, it could take up to a year to regrow. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America site can point you to a specialist that will hopefully be of more help.

Is my donor area over-harvested? (photo)

I am now 5 months since my surgery and I think that the surgeon went high on my donor area and may have over-harvested in this area as I can not see-through my scalp when I cut my hair short.

Your donor area may very well be over-harvested and the area on the left side looks lighter than the permanent zone below it. The harvested area appears above the permanent hair zone so speak with your surgeon about your concerns.

Is my donor area depleted?

Yes, there is a reduction of hair in the donor area which is clearly helped by letting your hair grow out longer as you did on the picture on the right. If this still bothers you, you can have Scalp Micropigmentation (click here) will make it look like you never had the donor area harvested

Is My Dermatologist Denying My Hair Loss for Some Reason?

Hi Docs,
I’m a white Caucasian man who turned 27 in April. I have been balding for 6 years now. I have no more doubt about that because my frontal hairline receded about 1 inch maybe more (depending on how I pull my hair back more or less) and I have got miniaturized hair on the temples. I would like to know why the dermatologist (head of a dermatology department) keeps denying my baldness and if I am really balding or not.

Well, at the very beginning, I didn’t notice anything. I used to go to the hairdresser once a month. But, at the age of 24 (about 3 years ago) I could see my scalp through my hair witch obviously began thinning. And my hair’s colour wasn’t the same anymore (much clearer than before).

So, one day I decided to have my hair cut very short. That day I realized that my hairline was receding. I could see the temples that I have never had and never seen before. According to the pictures, I’m receding since the age of 21 or 22. At the age of 21 I had a full head of hair and no temples, at the age of 22, I had temples, at the age of 24 I reached the first stage of baldness and now I’m at least at the first or maybe second stage of baldness at only 27.

Well, I can assume that I’m balding and having a similar evolution as my father had (maybe a little slower) except that he started a little earlier. At the age of 18-19, my father reached the first stage of the Norwood-Hamilton scale, at the age of 27, he was at the second stage maybe a little more (almost third), at the age of 32, he was at least NWD 3, by the time he turned 37 he reached the fourth stage and now, he is a 50 years old man and he’s almost 5 (almost bald)!

In my family, my father is the only “real” bald man. My grand father (my dad’s father) is only Norwood 2 at the age of 75, my uncles (my dad’s brothers) are Norwood 1 at 47 and Norwood 2 at 52 and my mother’s father is only Norwood 1 or 1.5 at the age of 68. I have to say also that when I was a kid I had a similar implantation (very low and with no temples at all), the same hair quality (very thick) and the same hair colour (dark) as my mothers’. Now, I keep my hair long and I only cut a little of length when it’s too long and I’m hiding the temples with my hair from the middle of the head.

I have already seen the dermatologist several times and he always denied the truth by saying “You’re not balding.” or “You have got only temples.” or “You have a lot of hair” or “You have got no hair loss.” etc. The last time I have seen the dermatologist (April of 2013) he told me that I had a “very young” implantation and I had no kind of baldness and he asked me how my mother’s brothers were but she has got only sisters !

So, I would like to know if it is possible that the dermatologist is denying my baldness or maybe is not seeing it. Am I really balding or not? (My hairline receded about 1 inch or more in only 6 years. That is what I call the second stage, maybe it is still a first stage).

Thanks for reading. I wish you could answer to my question.

I don’t know what purpose it would serve for your dermatologist to deny your hair loss if you actually had genetic loss. In situations like this, I would that you get another opinion. You can send me some good quality photographs with your eyebrows lifted high so that the wrinkles of your forehead show, and then I can give you the feedback you want and apparently need. Second opinions are always a good idea if you lack the confidence in the opinions you are given.

You would need to call my office at (310) 553-9113 or (800) NEW-HAIR to set up a formal phone or in-person consultation for this. Personal / individual consultations are not given via email or this site.

Is My Crown Balding or Is That Just How It Parts?

Hello,

I’m 22. I have had long hair for about 2 years now, and I hadn’t paid much attention to my hairline at all. Recently, in about the last 3-4 months, I began to start looking at it and noticed that I do indeed have a receding hairline. However, due to my long hair, I cannot quite tell if I have any vertex hair loss as well. I took a picture and have a spot, but it’s possible that it’s just the way my hair part. It has been like that ever since I’ve had my longer hair (I never paid attention to the back of my head). I have also noticed similar parts in other guys with long hair. None of my friends or family have mentioned it to me, especially my friends, since we talk about this type of stuff all the time.

What do you think?

First, thank you for allowing me to post your photo.

It is difficult to tell based on the lighting in the photo. Sometimes under harsh lights, the scalp can be seen even without any balding present. This indeed may be early crown balding, but the way to determine this is to map your scalp and look for miniaturization in both the frontal hairline and the crown. Then, if you have miniaturization, you are genetically balding and should consider treatment.
