I’m 17 Years Old and Wondering If My Hairline Is Receding (With Photos)

Dear Dr.Rassman,

I am 17 years old and I have started to worry about my hair line. The corners + the center of the hairline looks sharper than before. When I pull my hair back, the frontal hairs are actually smaller and thinner. I also have not seen any significant hair loss, so this is confusing me. According to forums like hairlosshelp.com, I am a Norwood 3 and my hairline is indeed receding.

What I would like is your opinion judging by some photos. I have no earlier ones to compare it to, which is unlucky.

We’ve been getting a lot of emails like this from teenagers asking about their hair loss. I’ll do my best to answer some of them here, but for everyone else, post your photos to BaldingForum.com, and you can get feedback from other members of the site. Keep in mind that there is only so much I can offer advice wise without an in-person examination.

Your pattern shows a Norwood Class 3 pattern. This is balding, as shown, when you pull your hair back. The corners have risen higher than a maturing hairline. You’re 17 years old, so you should get a parent involved and see a doctor if you’re concerned.

I’m 17 Years Old and Just Found a Bald Spot!

I just recently noticed a bald spot on the back of my head. I’m only 17, and both of my parents (who are in their mid 40’s) are yet to show any signs of baldness. Yet, I appear to be going bald before I’m legally even adult.

If you guys could help me out, that would be great. I’m sort of freaking out right now. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much!

It could be early balding or possibly something else. Genetic balding can skip generations and come from either side of the family line, so just because your parents aren’t showing any hair loss, it doesn’t mean you’re automatically in the clear.

I strongly suggest that you see a good doctor and get a proper diagnosis. Sorry, there’s not much I can offer you advice-wise beyond that.

I’m 17 and Need a Hair Transplant

But is there anyone in Southeast US willing to do transplants on 17 year old? I have nothing good going for me, I’m not responding to Minox and my dermatologist refused me finasteride so I’m fucked, I tried Nizoral and it didn’t do much, both of my temples are thin but my right temple is missing and the skin seems somewhat scarred for no reason, my hair is so thin at the sides that I can actually see my scalp and so can make out it’s cracked texture. Is there anything I can do until then?

Please don’t look for a hair transplant at 17. This could be the worst mistake you can ever do. If you keep looking, you will find a sleazy doctor to do it and you will regret the decision for the rest of your life.

I’m 17 and Balding in a NW 7 Pattern — Can I Take Propecia Now?!

Dr Rassman would you please kindly help me. I am a 17 year who has very strong hair loss. My hairloss started when I was 15. Am losing hair in a NW 7 pattern. Hairloss runs strong in my family but not at this age.

I have spoken to my doctor about propecia he said its upto me if I want to take. I honestly want to take it but I don’t know how it will affect my body development.

So my question is to you is will you prescribe propecia to a 17 year old (if one came to your office) and what are the risk

Propecia is an elective medication. If you do not want to take it, then do not take it. This decision is ultimately yours. If someone under 18 years old comes to see me at my office, they need to be accompanied by their legal guardian or parent before I see them or recommend any treatments.

You need a diagnosis by a physician before starting on any medical regimen. You need a doctor who knows the science of balding and there are many of us from around the world. Since you noted in your email that you’re in the UK, there is a first class doctor there — Dr. Bessam Farjo — and I would suggest that you arrange to see him.

I’m 16 Years Old and My Hair Is Falling Out At the Top of My Head!

I’ll try and make this as short as possible. I am 16 and will be 17 on halloween and for about the past 2.5-3 months i’ve been noticing hair falling out somewhat alot… mainly on the top of my head. The hair falling out is becomes thinner as you get closer to the root and also the root has that white bulb at the end of it, and some of the hairs look as if they are sort of whitish around the root but that may be because it just looks like that since they are getting thinner towards the root.

My father is 52 and is baldish sort of on top but has hair and the same for my mothers side of the family. And i’ve noticed that the top of my head, where the hairs are coming out, is kind of itchy and its not dandruff or lice…also my diet is kind of bad…

PLEASE HELP!!!!

I am not sure how I can help, but if you are male, post-puberty, and experiencing rapid hair loss, the chances are it may be genetic (androgenic alopecia). It may be worthwhile to see your primary care doctor or a hair transplant doctor for a good diagnosis. Without knowing what you have, you cannot treat it.

At 16 years old, I’m not suggesting a hair transplant, but to simply consider meeting with a doctor that specializes in hair loss so that you can get a better idea of what is going on.

I’m 16 Years Old and I See the Sides of My Head Are Thinning

Hi. I’m a 16 year old guy who eats healthy organic food and exercises every day. My mom’s dad went bald but my dad’s dad had healthy hair until he died. Also my dad still has pretty much all of his hair. My older brother has hair like my mom’s dad and he went bald. I, on the other hand, have hair like my dad. So, enough background info.

A couple months ago I started to notice that hair on the sides of my head were getting smaller. Now I have smaller and less hair on the sides and a little less one the front of my hairline. The hairs on the sides are shorter and thinner than on the rest of my scalp. What should I do?

It’s possible that a 16 year old with a strong family history for balding can detect early male pattern baldness (MPB). The first thing I would want to do is to measure the hair bulk throughout your scalp. This is a great way to help make more accurate predictions of hair loss and it documents the status of the hair each and every time it is used.

At 16 years old, I would want to know this FOR SURE, because it would either tell me that I do not have a problem with early hair loss or that I do. If you had documented bulk reductions with this test, then the use of Propecia would probably be worth exploring with your doctor.

I’m 16 Years Old and Feel That Masturbation is Causing My Hair Loss

I am 16 years old and i m experiencing heavy hair loss… I have been masturbating for 4 years, every 2-3 days and i feel that masturbating is the reason for my hair loss. I also have a few pimples on my head after i masturbate, but i use a ointment Ecodex-G and the pimples disappear in a few days.

Please tell me if this hair loss is due to heavy masturbating,, and is it possible to regrow these hairs if i stop masturbating for a long span of time (2-3 months), and if not then what is the problem and the solution for it.

I only seem to get these questions from young men in India, which leads me to believe that it is a widely accepted myth in that region.

Masturbation and hair loss are unrelated. I’ve answered this question countless times and the answer doesn’t change. If curing hair loss was as simple as not masturbating, there would be a lot less balding men in the world. Of course, you are free to not masturbate and test for yourself, but it will make no difference in whether your hair grows or not.

I’m 16 With Early Hair Loss, I Wash My Hair Twice Daily, and I Train Mixed Martial Arts

I am 16 years old and I think I am starting to show signs of male pattern baldness. I noticed a few weeks ago that the hair on the crown area and top of my head was thinning, but I haven’t noticed any major signs of a receding hairline. I started researching and found that hair loss can be genetic. So I asked my grandfather on my mother’s side when he began to lose hair and he informed me that he started noticing hair loss when he was 18.

Another thing I found while researching was that amount of exercise can be linked to hair loss. Which, if true, can be linked to my hair thinning because I was training in MMA fighting for about two months but recently stopped and suddenly didn’t do any exercise at all. As soon as I stopped training is when I began to notice that my hair was thinning.

Also, I am experiencing slight itching and tingling in the crown area of my head. Another thing is that I do shower and wash my hair, on average, two times a day. I was surprised when I noticed my hair was thinning because I grow hair on almost every other part of my body except for my back. I have already set an appointment with my dermatologist, but it won’t be for another few weeks.

I was wondering in the meantime if it would be a good decision to start using a thickening shampoo and take vitamins. So if there are any suggestions that you can provide I would greatly appreciate it.

Genetic hair loss in men can generally start with the onset of puberty. The hair loss seen after your MMA training could’ve been coincidental, and body hair growth is unrelated to scalp hair loss. I’ve read online chatter that exercise / weight training and hair loss are linked, but I’ve not seen that to be the case.

There is no stopping or reversing a genetic predisposition forever. Hair thickening shampoos and vitamins are not cures, but may make your hair feel thicker. If you are worried about hair loss, you may want an objective examination and diagnosis before starting on an expensive journey of investing in shampoos and supplements. At 16 years old, you should also get a parent involved.

I’m 16, is my hairline receding?

Your hairline is moved from round to flat. As it further matures, it will become V shaped. The tip of your widow’s peak show where the hairline was when you were 5 years old. Some men lose the widow’s peak as their hairline matures. That is what is happening to you at this time.

I’m 16 and My Hairline Receded After a Haircut!

ok i got my hair cut around September. It was at the bottom of my ribcage and i got it cut a little higher than my collar bone. Ever since then its been falling out a lot more. Ive asked my parents multiple times if my hair line is receding. They say its not and i also get them to look at the top area of my head. It has got thinner i can tell. My grandma says its just the seasons but i don’t know if that’s true.I am a 16 year old male.

Your haircut didn’t contribute to your hairline changing. What it sounds like (without photos, I’m just making an assumption) is that your hairline is starting to mature. This is premature around your age, but it happens.

Your new hairstyle might be contributing to your hair looking thinner on top, but I don’t know enough about your hair character (fine, coarse, etc) or hair color to really provide much more than guesses. Maybe there’s something else going on that was coincidental to the timing of the haircut. If you’re truly concerned, have your parents take you to see a dermatologist.
