I Had My Hair Permed Twice in One Day, Now Its Falling Out!

I am 24 years old female. I had my hair permed in August and I started losing my hair after a month. before the perming I had very healthy virgin hair.(nothing done to them ever no coloring nothing).I am very worried about my hair I am loosing every day and they just fall without my touching them. I am getting split ends as well. Another thing they had to perm my hair twice because it did not work first time at all. please tell me what do you think is going on

You may have damaged your hair with the perms, or maybe it is just a coincidence and you have some cause of hair loss that requires a doctor’s examination. Unfortunately, there’s not much I can do for you without an exam. Female hair loss can be quite difficult to find a cause for. I suggest you make an appointment to see a dermatologist in your area.

I Had My FUE Done Over a Year Ago and It Is Still Not Fully Grown

Hi Dr

I went thru my fue 15mths ago. Today i am still feeling some stubbles (transplanted graft) on the recipient area. These stubbles do not seems to be growing. Is there a possibility that newly transplanted graft stays as stubble – do not fall off neither grow out and become healthy hair? Or am i just a slow grower?

While it is possible, is highly unlikely that you will start finally seeing growth at 15 months. You should have seen most growth at about 6 to 12 months following your surgery.

More importantly, the new hair growth will not appear as coarse stubble (like a beard). It’ll start off fine and grow as the months go by. Sometimes the stubble can be remnants of the original hair grafts that never fell out, but are just stuck in its place. You can test this by having someone find these stubbles and pulling on them with tweezers… or if you can reach it yourself, you can do this yourself. If the stubble is a dead hair shaft (old leftover follicle from 15 months ago), it should slide / slip right out.

The implication of this is that the surgery may have been a failure. Have you talked to your surgeon for a follow-up since your procedure?

I Had Multiple Hair Transplants and the Hair Fell Out After 5 Years

Had my first transplant (flap rotation) at age 19 in 1985 (big mistake). Continued to bald behind flap and put up with stares from strangers until 2005 when had 3000 fue put in front and behind flap. Grew out well, no stares, felt pretty normal, life was great.

Problem April 2010, nearly all 3000 fue fell out after 5 years of growing, all in about a 6 month period. Back to being stared at. September 2010 had another 3000 fue (2000 scalp 1000 beard) put in front and behind flap by same reputable FUE surgeon. Grew out well again, but now starting to fall out and started getting stared at again.

Had blood work done but all clear for thyroid, lupus, iron etc. Have used 2.5mg Proscar for many years and not changed regime. Not on any medications known to cause hair loss. Getting very desperate as no donor left for more transplants. Any ideas on what could be going on ? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks.

There is clearly something going on and you need to address your issues with your surgeon.

I sound like I’m a broken record, but body hair / beard hair does not follow the same growth cycle as scalp hair and it is not considered the standard in hair transplant surgery. I have seen many failures of body hair transplant patients performed by doctors all over the world.

Some surgeons use grafts from outside of the donor area, and FUE grafts taken from the non-permanent areas can fall out, as this may be genetically triggered and accelerated. For clarity, the permanent zone is 2 1/2 inches high and can be measured above the notch on the back of the skull and around the sides of the head.

I Had High Levels of Depression The Same Week I Had FUE

Greetings Doctor,

I recently had an FUE procedure that involved 2,500 grafts, about two months ago. I’m a bit concerned as I went through some personal matters that caused high levels of depression; all within the same week I had the procedure.

No grafts popped and the scalp healed well, however is it possible that due to the depression, that it could affect the outcome? Is it a possibility, that I developed Telogen effluvium and caused some of the grafts to become void?

I’m just concerned as this procedure costed a pretty penny. Thank you for your time and patience, Doctor.

Why are you not asking this question to your surgeon? Have an open line of communication with your doctor, especially in the months following your surgery.

An FUE procedure of 2500 grafts is a very high number of grafts for anyone and I am always cautious when I hear patients having those numbers. In the end, only time will tell how your outcome will be. At least take some comfort in the fact that depression and emotional stress will not impact the growth or outcome.

I had a forehead reduction surgery and thinned out the side hairline (Photo)

Sometimes when a woman has a forehead reduction surgery, or even a face lift, they could develop thinning of the hair on the corners and/or the sides of the hairline. If this is a recent surgery, I would wait a full eight months to see if the hair comes back. Shock loss in women is often reversible on its own. If it does not get better in a year, this area can then be transplanted to make it thick again.

I Had an Iron Deficiency, When Will My Hair Regrow?

(female) I lost a lot of my hair due to an iron deficiency, after 2 months on iron pills it stopped falling. Now 5 months after it stopped falling I still have no noticeable regrowth. When do I start to worry. Do I need more Iron to get it started. I am at 31 which is in the normal range 20-160 thanks

If you corrected the problem, you will have to wait a full year to find out if the hair loss will reverse. It may not, but in a year with good nutrition, you will probably know.

I Had an Increased Libido from Propecia and Then Months Later I No Longer Have Morning Wood

Hello doctor,
I’m 23 years old, I started losing my hair at 22, became very depressed and immediately sought out a transplant. I’ve seen a dermatologist in my area who is qualified for transplants and tells me I’m too young and my hair thinning is not so bad to even consider surgery. I was prescribed Propecia 1mg daily, and like some of the previous questions I’ve read, I’ve experienced an increase in libido for a short period of time. Its now month 9 on propecia and I no longer have the ‘morning wood’ and am experiencing decreased sexual appetite and desire. I am going off of propecia immediately, is there anything you can recommend for my situation?

Propecia can cause sexual side effects in 1 to 2% of the men that take the drug. If you are one of them, you need to inform your doctor and consider your options (including stopping the medication, which I guess you already did). It’s interesting that you had an increase in libido followed by a completely opposite effect months later. Did you notice any hair regrowth while you were on the medication? Have you talked with your prescribing doctor for a follow-up lately?

Besides Propecia, the only other FDA approved medication I recommend is Rogaine (minoxidil), but I really cannot give you an specific recommendations since I do not know you and I have not examined you in person. I can only give you general factual information. Whether you’re a candidate for surgery is also something I can’t tell you without an examination and more information about your hair loss. At 23 years old with early loss, I would usually recommend trying medications before opting for a surgery.

I Had a Unilateral Orchiectomy — Will That Help My Hair Loss?

Hi, I am a 23 year old with a receding hairline. I have been losing hair for over a year now. I recently had a unilateral orchiectomy following my diagnosis for testicular cancer last month.

I was wondering if the operation will help me in anyway with my hair loss. Could having one less testicle have an effect on my DHT levels and my hairloss? I have been on Propecia for 3 months now and am hoping that the medication and surgery will help me out a bit.

When a man has one testicle removed, the remaining testicle will enlarge and increase its output of testosterone to compensate for the missing testicle.
