How Can I Tell if My Bald Spot Was From a Chemical Burn?

(female) I just noticed this past week that I have a bald spot in one area of my head, the top left. The area is smooth and tender. (Tenderness may be a result of the products I’ve been applying to stimulate growth.) I am assuming that this baldness occurred after a no-lye chemical relaxer was applied, since I now vaguely remember a patch of hair coming out at that time. How can I know what caused this area to become bald and when will the hair grow back if it will? By the way it looks, it seems that nothing is happening.

Smooth skin suggests a burn (it could be other conditions, but with your memory of history a burn sounds likely). See a good dermatologist and you may get some good insights into the bald spot. If it will grow back (not a third degree burn or one that killed the hair follicles) it may grow back in 3-6 months.

How Can I Tell If I Damaged My Transplanted Grafts?

Hi there.

14 days after hair transplant surgery i got sunburned…i saw a similar question here on the site.

my question is – is there a way to know if i damaged my hair transplant? Does in any case of sunburn the newly grafts are “killed” what are the signs ( if any ) to know whether you killed your grafts or are they alive and slowly growing….? I would appreciate if you could explain why and under what conditions the sunburn can prevent growth.

i’m quite worried and appreciate your answer. thank you

Ultraviolet light is bad for skin and worse for new wounds, which are your healing grafts at 2 weeks. If the burn was deep enough to be a second degree burn, then you could have damaged the grafts, but superficial first degree burns should not have gone deep enough to damage the grafts from a growth perspective. Healing tissues, on the other hand, may be a problem.

Did you get the instructions to keep your head covered? My patients are indoctrinated on the things that they can and can not do. Ask your surgeon for a list of do’s and don’ts, and as long as you avoid the don’ts I’d expect that you shouldn’t experience any problems with your transplant.

How Can I Stop My Body Hair Growth?

Hello,
I’m a 46 year old male and for the past five or so years, I have felt like I’m turning into a Chia Pet! I have hair growing all over my body and it grows fast. Is there anything that will stop the growth of hair? If I pull it out, it grows back within a week.
Thanks

Chia PetShort of laser treatment to kill the hair area by area, you may be stuck with what nature and your ancestors gave you.

Laser hair removal is a fairly large industry today, and from what I understand, not too comfortable (and could take multiple treatments).

How Can I Repair Heat Damaged Hair?

When I was around 14 my brother took me to the barber and made me get haircuts that looked good but required a hair dryer to maintain the look which I wasn’t good with. Every morning after having a shower I would use a shitty hair dryer on the max setting on my hair for a good few minutes to try and achieve the original look which I couldn’t really do and this went on for at least a year.

I thought I was balding since I could see my scalp when I looked close in the mirror but I wasn’t losing any hair and I was cutting my hair short so it didn’t really matter that much at the time but when I kept my hair longer it didn’t look pleasing so I decided to shave all my hair off because I thought it would remove all the “thin hairs” I had and then grow thicker hair which was all a waste.

That was two years ago and my hair is still weak and fine. How do I go about repairing my hair so it becomes thicker on the top? Should I use a Dermaroller?

Hair damage is solved as the new hair grows up from the scalp, while scalp damage to the growing hair follicles in the scalp can be permanent. See a doctor.

How Can I Remove Cowlicks at the Front Of My Hair?

(female)
I couldn’t find any other web sites to answer my questions..

I would like to know about removal/work on cows licks. I have 2 at the front where my hair naturally parts, making it difficult to style and change my part to something looking more desirable. I also get a weird hair regrowth around the cows lick and people often ask me if i cut a chunk out of my hair. I hate and would like to do something to correct it. Can you please explain you procedure and do you have any before/after photos. Information on this seems VERY hard to find!

Thank you for your time. Kind Regards

Many men and women have requested that I put these cowlicks in for them, as they feel that these are sexy. If you want to remove them there are numerous hair removal methods (such as laser hair removal) and even a hair transplant procedure to add the hairs in the “right” direction. This is a very extensive and more difficult process (to remove and add).

How Can I Find Out If My Doctor Will Prescribe 5mg Generic Finasteride?

I’ve read back 30 pages, but could not find a former instance of my question. Apologies if it is a chronic repeat.

I’ve been taking Propecia for one year, and recently accepted a lower-paying job. As such, I am interested in switching to the quartered 5mg generic Proscar method. I would like to know that the doctor is willing to prescribe the 5mg prior to scheduling an appointment – is there a way to politely obtain this information?

Thank you in advance for your response.

I can’t tell if your question is about another clinic or doctor at NHI. If it’s elsewhere, just call the doctor and ask. Most patients we treat with finasteride at NHI are prescribed the 5mg dose to save costs, and they are instructed to take 1/4 pill a day.

How Can I Expect a Natural Transplant Result when Donald Trump and Other Rich People Can’t?

Hi Dr.

I’ve been looking at your page for some time now and it is loaded with great information. I also consider myself to be fairly well educated regarding the various options available to balding men such as myself since I’ve spent years keeping up on these developments. I am 39 years old and my hairline began to recede when I was about 20. For the longest time, the rest of my hair was so thick that no one really noticed since I wore my hair long. Over the past few years, the top has thinned substantially and I no longer bother to try to style it. I just wear it very short. I’ve never wanted to be one of those guys who look like he’s trying to hide something. The problem is that I’m also not one of those guys who looks good bald. I wish I were, but I’m not. About 15 years ago I had consultations at two different hair replacement doctors and both, to their credit, told me I was not a candidate at that time and to come back in the future when my hair loss was more advanced. I’m sure that time is now. However, I’m not sure I want to commit to a transplant procedure. The biggest question I have is this. Is there really a chance for someone of moderate means such as myself to achieve a natural and attractive result from a hair transplant when people with unlimited resources like Donald Trump, David Lee Roth or the myriad other balding rich people can’t seem to do it? I would say that I’m probably somewhere around a 3 on the Norwood chart.

TrumpI laughed when I read your question; I’ve been wondering the same thing. A good hair transplant today is the norm, but in the days when Donald Trump did it (allegedly *cough, cough*), it was not a procedure that produced undetectable results. Mr. Trump, I believe, had scalp reductions (the bald spot was cut out) and hair transplants of the older vintage. The issue for people like him should be to repair the process, but he can not wipe the slate clean and go back in time prior to having the surgery. We wrote and published in peer-reviewed medical journals; most of the original articles were on the art of repair. I have no hesitation in discussing the repair process, but first, please read some of the articles we wrote on the subject:

For a person having his first hair transplant, you need to find a competent doctor (when you are ready) who is artistic and has a great reputation. I stress the importance of viewing patients (one-on-one) as a doctor who proudly shows off his/her results by giving you the opportunity to meet many of his/her patients. This will give you a very good idea of what you would look like after a hair transplant. I always say that what you see in the patients you meet will be a reflection of the surgical results you will get. Always ask for “before” pictures when you meet these patients yourself! Not to be alarmist, but I know of one immoral doctor who used a photo in a newspaper ad of a man with no balding to promote his practice — he was legally able to call this man a hair transplant patient because he had a few grafts placed behind his thick, normal hairline.

How Can I Eliminate My Linear Transplant Scar?

Hello Doctor,

After 2 hair transplants of 1000 grafts and then 1800 grafts, I think investing 30-45mins every morning to gel and blow dry my hair and still be worried about wind speeds outside is probably not normal. My hair loss was rated at 5A/6.

Long story short, I am thinking of shaving my head but am concerned about the big scar left on the back of my head from the 2 surgeries. Can you please let me know the options I have to reduce/eliminate this scar?

Thank you for your time and your teams contribution to this blog.

There’s no way to completely eliminate all donor scarring. You can’t undo a transplant. You might be able to have a scar revision, but even then there will still be visible scarring to some degree.

There is a way to camouflage the scar, as long as you didn’t mind keeping a very closely-cropped hairstyle. At New Hair Institute we have been addressing hair transplant linear scars with Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) (see example). For more information about SMP please visit scalpmicropigmentation.com.

How Can I Determine If I Have DUPA or DPA?

Hi

I recently did research and wanted to know how i can go about finding out whether I am suffering from DPA or DUPA? I am devastated at prospect of potentially not being suitable for a HT due to potentially suffering from DUPA and wanted to know how i can go about finding more out, having density measured and who would be suitable person to see for consultation.

Generally a physician specializing in hair transplant surgery or a dermatologist can diagnose these things. DPA is diffuse patterned alopecia. DUPA is diffuse unpatterned alopecia. One has a pattern and other does not. Under clinical microscopy of the fringe area around the sides and back of your head, the DUPA patient will have significant miniaturization present, while the DPA patient will have a healthy donor area. I do not mean to make light of it, but a good physician should be able to diagnose these things.
