What Class Is My Boyfriend’s Hair Loss? (with Photos)

Hello Doctor,

My boyfriend is rather paranoid about his hairloss, personally, I don’t see a problem… but I pointed him out to your website as I feel it’s a great source of information! My boyfriend has agreed to post some pictures so you can help determine his Norwood class, and he would also like to know if propecia and/or rogaine would be suitable to help him with his receding hairline! Thanks for your help! We look forward to hearing from you!

This is a Norwood class 3 pattern. I can not recommend how to treat him without seeing him. Generally neither Rogaine nor Propecia will reverse this pattern, but Propecia may prevent its progression to another more advanced pattern. Your boyfriend needs a good doctor.

I’ve posted the photos below. Click to enlarge.

What causes hair transplant induced hair loss?

Can you please expand on what you mean by saying hair transplants accelerate balding, especially in younger men? Thank you

Younger men often don’t see their final pattern, but it is often there if they look through a hand microscope and see a lot of miniaturization present. A hair transplant causes many of these miniaturized hairs to fall out, and they RARELY come back. Remember, miniaturization doesn’t necessarily mean thread-like hair, as it could be hair that has lost only 30% of its thickness, not easily seen without extensive hand microscopic evaluation. With a 30% loss of hair thickness in most men, they will not see thinning or balding. I have seen many 23-year-old men who get hair transplants and never knew they had significant miniaturization with a miniaturization pattern that suggests a more advanced balding pattern.

Young men (under 26 years of age) who have hair transplants may see a Class 3 pattern, but they might have a Class 6 or 7 pattern, which would be a surprise. I don’t like surprises, nor should the patients. So many young me are going to Turkey, where technicians are in charge of the business. In most of these clinics, such evaluations seldom occur except for less than a dozen good doctors that I know personally. Shame on the doctors who do these surgeries without looking for and quantifying the miniaturization before they collect your money and do the surgery. Too many of today’s doctors, even in Western countries, are in it for the money and forget the oath they took when they became doctors, which states: ABOVE ALL, DO NO HARM.

I recently met with a 23-year-old male who came to me after having three hair transplants in the US at different clinics by less-than-honorable doctors. His entire donor supply was depleted, and so was his bank account. The hair transplant doesn’t even look normal to me. All of these transplants were in the first 3 inches of his hairline. When I examined the hair behind the transplanted 3 inches of his frontal area, I saw signs of miniaturization that went back to the crown. The miniaturization was very early, possibly too early to have fallen out with the transplant. He was lucky because he took finasteride, which often stops the loss of miniaturized hairs associated with a hair transplant. As this was a recent visit, I can’t tell you how it will turn out. I suspect he will live with the transplants, even with the defects of an imbalanced hairline and a lot of 2-3 hair grafts seen in the frontal edge of the hairline.

What Causes Graying of Hair

Doctor Rassman I want to know something about grey hair. Is grey hair caused by stress or simply genetics?

Probably a little of both. Some people almost never go grey. Some people, even in their childhood years have grey hair. Some have total white hairs (Santa Clause). People with little or no stress get grey hairs. There is no clear cut rule.

Aging has a part to do with it as well. If you think about it from a scientific approach with genetics as a partial cause, we all have a certain programmed destiny of the cells in our body. Environmental factors may alter some of this destiny but the point is that if the hairs go through several life cycles (anagen catagen telogen) over a person’s life some of those hairs may be pre-programmed to fall out and never regrow after an “x” number of cycles. Some may be pre-programmed to turn white or grey after an “y” number of cycles. This may be a simplistic way to view biology but it may help understand the variation and why some may lose hair or have hairs that turn grey.

What Causes a Maturing Hairline?

Hairlines changing to mature hairlines are still hairloss caused by DHT right? Would propecia help slow or stop the hairline moving back to a mature hairline? I see some people with no recession at all. I want to be one of those people. If propecia doesnt stop a mature hairline, then what besides DHT causes this hairloss?

When baby seals (harp seals) are born, they have a beautiful white insulative coat. As they mature, they lose this coat. It’s in their genes. Likewise, for Caucasians, a maturing hairline in present in 95% of men nd it is in their genes (in part due to DHT). Thus theoretically, a DHT inhibitor like Propecia may halt the maturing hair line. You should note, however, I used the term ‘in part’ which means that there are other factors that may be responsible for the change, not just DHT.

There are few points to consider:

  1. Male pattern baldness is not a maturing hair line. Otherwise it would be called a maturing bald line.
  2. Propecia’s effect is best seen to work on the crown of the head and not the corners or the frontal hairline.

What Caused Sudden Female Hair Loss — Chemical Relaxer or Psoriasis?

A client I have serviced for almost one year accuses me of causing her hair to fall out after a relaxer I gave her. She called me two days after the relaxer saying her hair was shedding. I am very thorough with my rinsing of chemicals and the shampoos that follow. She said her hair was coming out in strands and that her scalp itched a little. I suggested she see a dermatologist. Her dermatologist told her that there was nothing showing in her bloodwork that would cause her hair to fall out. He prescribed her Luxiq which as you know is for psoriasis of the skin and scalp. Would’nt that not mean that she had a skin condition which caused her hair to fall out and not the relaxer?

It sounds like you may be looking for potential legal advice. I do not know your client or the entire circumstance involving her hair loss. This sounds like an acute episode of hair loss happened within a couple of days of the treatment you gave her. There seems to be a direct link between the use of chemicals and the hair loss, based on what you’re telling me. As I’ve written before, psoriasis will not cause hair loss unless you pick at it enough to develop traction alopecia. This does not seem to be a traction alopecia case, though.

There are many possible reasons for female hair loss, ranging from medical illness to genetics to hormonal to stress. Moreover, even with modern advancement in medical technology, the exact cause and/or cure for female hair loss is still elusive. Your client’s hair loss may have been related to the chemical stress or it may just also be coincidental. I really cannot say.

What Caused My Transplanted Hair to Thin 6 Months After My Surgery?

I’m 6 months into my hair transplant and it seems to be getting thinner from about 2 months ago. I was under a great deal of stress a few months back. Could that cause a thinning of the newly transplanted hair. I use Rogaine and Avodart every day. The doctor said it was ok to use on the new hair. At the 4 month mark it really looked promising. However it has definitely thinned since then. Any suggestions on the cause?

Hair transplant surgery is highly variable in terms of the individual patient, as well as the techniques used by clinics and doctors. Many people who have a hair transplant will actually lose some of their original hair and that may be the cause of what you are seeing.

The general estimate is that it can take 4-8 months to see results, and usually the majority of the results are visible by the 8th-12th month. I’d follow up with the doctor that did your surgery.

What Can I Do for Smelly, Oily Hair?

Hi Dr. Rassman,

I’m a 18 year old male and my hair is really oily and I mean REALLY OILY I take a shower every night but once I wake up in the morning its already really greasy and it smells, this started 4 years ago when I started High School I went to a regular doctor about 2 years ago so he could check out my scalp but he said it was fine. I have used Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Oil Shampoo, Head & Shoulders Hair Endurance for Men, Selsun Blue and Suave Clarifying Shampoo in the past couple of years and have have little to no success, so I was wondering if you can help me with my “smelly hair syndrome” as they call it I will really appreciate the help.

Thank You for your time

It’s possible there’s some shampoo out there that might help, but I couldn’t specify which one help for your particular case. A good dermatologist might be able to help you.

There is a pretty good article on this “Smelly Hair Syndrome” available here.

What Can I Do at 16 Years Old If I’ve Been Receding for 2-3 Years Already?

I’m 16 years old and I’ve been receding for about 2-3 years now. But last year I started thinning and it got worse over time. I’ve been currently using Kevis 8 for about 2 months and was wondering if this doesn’t work for me then what are my options at such a young age? And I also have carry the genetic hair loss gene as well.

Genetic hair loss for men can start with puberty. If you started losing hair at 13 or 14 years old, that is rather young, but it isn’t impossible (as you can attest). If what you’re seeing is male pattern baldness, then unfortunately, it is the genetic hand you were dealt. But are you sure it is actual genetic loss and not some other factors?

There are medications such as Rogaine and Propecia that treat hair loss, but you would need to be seen by a doctor with the permission of your parent/guardian for a diagnosis and a possible treatment plan. At 16 years old, you are likely not a candidate for Propecia yet, as it is theoretically possible that it could stunt growth for those young men still going through puberty.

In general, herbal products, magic lotions, and special shampoos do not work. It is a buyer beware market.

What Can I Do About Poor Hair Growth of My 7 Month Old Son?

I want to ask about the baby’s hair. I had a baby boy, his hair slightly at birth, even in the crown of the region virtually no hair or bald. But I put aloe vera on a regular basis to grow hair on the crown. But overall not too much hair.

My baby boy is now seven months old and has never cut his hair. I want to ask is, whether the baby’s hair will grow thicker if shaved off? And what if the hair was shaved off, whether the hair would grow up to be more violent?

Shaving the head does not make hair grow faster, so do not do that. Also, aloe vera isn’t going to grow his hair.

The hair will change over the next year or so. I would not worry about it, as some babies look bald and some are very hairy. By 18 months, you should see a full head of hair on your son. Baby hair is very fine and will not develop its normal thickness for some years.

FUE over-harvesting of the donor area (photo)

If you have completely healed, you can have Scalp Micropigmentation to address this problem, see here: https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/scar-covering/. Your problem should be a warning to many men to have their FUE pushed high especially when non-trained people are doing it and don’t understand the math of supply and demand for donor hair nor the necessity to remove the FUE grafts uniformly.
