In a recent article in the Journal of Urology, an article was published which addressed the relationship between prostate cancer and the drug finasteride. The authors came out of various universities (Dr. G. Andriole was the lead author, Ref: J Urol. 2005 Dec;174(6):2098-2104)
Simply stated, what I read suggested to me that they reviewed the 7 year Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial that was finished a few years ago and published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The conclusions of the original study showed that this drug (finasteride 5mgs) reduced the appearance of prostate cancer by a statistically significant degree. There were some questions about the ‘control’ group when compared to those that actually received the drug. These authors suggested that the difference in the severity of the malignancies that were identified between the two groups may not have been real, but rather they were the results of patient selection criteria based upon blood testing, amongst other things. This group still did feel that prostate cancer chemoprevention with finasteride needs further research, although I personally believe that they are ignoring good statistical evidence to the contrary. Keeping an open mind is always good.
Please note that I just wanted to share what I read with the readers of this blog. I do not own Merck stock and can not benefit from any opinions expressed here.
I have been using Minoxidil AND Finasteride, and I developed pericarditis. The VA did not warn me of these possibilities. Today, I am aware of the Minoxidil connection but not about a Finasteride connection. Is there a clear Finasteride connection I can get data on?
There are reports that this drug (Finasteride) can cause pericarditis (a swelling and inflammation in the sack around the heart).tc
In regards of sides, long time safety, price, practical usage what are the arguments for each method. Also is it possible to make the topical version at home. I’d highly appreciate objective arguments at with some literature for evidence, but of course own experience with trying out these methods.
Oral is better if you don’t get side effects because it addresses the miniaturization that you can’t see in parts of your scalp where you may have already started balding. The topical only works where you put it and spreading it all over your scalp, doesn’t make sense if the pill can do it a a fraction of the cost without the nuisance of daily applications which are time consuming
I’ve been on fin for about 10 months now, something I’ve noticed is that I’ve literally just been shedding CONSTANTLY the whole time on the drug, like can pull out like 50 or so hairs per day from my top, sides, back if i really bother to, I’ve not really noticed a difference in my hair, maybe the crown has slightly thickened but other than that nothing.
You may be progressing with your balding process and not controlled by finasteride. See a good doctor who knows about this problem.

2019-09-03 04:34:002019-04-08 10:34:37Finasteride not working for me after 3+ years, should I go on dutasteride?
So i started January 2019 with 0,5 mg finasteride until june 2019. Then upped to 1,25 since then. I am still shedding more than 100 hairs after showering (i shower every two days). My right temple area has receded. I do comb my hair so it is not visible. However, my question is will this receded area (so no hairs are there anymore) grow back or is it lost?
There is a good chance that the hair loss is slowing with the finasteride. IF you should stop it, you might even see it accelerate. Some men’s genes are just to strong for balding and even finasteride might not be able to reverse the process, only a hair transplant works.

So I was on fin for around 1 year and then stopped for 2 months and have started again for 2 months (present day) and my hairline is progressively getting worse.
Finasteride doesn’t work for everyone but it often slows or stops the hair and as long as you can accept that, it is better than losing it
Be patient as Finasteride may take a year to see results. If it only slows down the hair loss, you won’t know if it is working until you stop, and then it could be too late.
