Wellman Tricologic Tablets

Hello NHI team,
I have recentaly bought Wellman tricologic tablets, are for helping to maintain healthy hair follicles and existing hair growth. The tablets utilises Keratone, a combination of ligans, amino-acids, PABA(para-aminobenzoic acid) and pantothenic acid for the maintenance of natural hair colour. Here is some of what the tablets contain and this is what the box says and their website:

KeratoneTM includes;
• Standardised Lignan Extract – lignans (including the special compound Secoisolariciresionol Diglucoside) have been shown to help to naturally balance the conversion of testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is implicated in the male hair growth cycle.
• N-acetyl-cysteine – this amino acid supports hair growth, and hair shaft diameter for fuller hair.
• L-cystine – this amino acid dimer of cystine is integral to disulphide bonding in the keratin of the hair, supporting its strength.
• L-methionine – an essential amino acid that must be provided from the diet and participates in a wide range of hair related biochemical reactions.
• L-lysine – as essential amino acid.
• Choline – a constituent of lecithin in cell membranes. A lack of choline can influence hair growth and hair pigmentation
• Inositol – a constituent of lecithin in cell membranes and a growth factor for rapidly dividing hair cells. A lack of inositol can influence hair growth and skin health

Silicon – Silicon is the third most abundant trace element of the human body and is important in the structure of hair.
Iodine – Iodine plays a role in metabolism and required for hair growth to proceed at optimal levels.
Antioxidant vitamins C, E and Beta-carotene – help to protect against the damaging effects of free radicals, which can lead to premature ageing. Vitamin C is also essential in forming the connective tissue of the skin while Vitamin E may help support skin repair. Beta-carotene provides a source of vitamin A, which helps support scalp oil production and skin health.
B-vitamin complex – Essential in the health and growth of rapidly dividing cells such as those present in the hair follicle

Recognising the concerns many men have about hair growth and hair condition, Wellman Tricologic® has been developed by leading scientists. Each specialist formula tablet provides 29 bio-active ingredients including essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients designed to nourish hair by maintaining healthy hair follicle metabolism.

My question is, what are your views on these tablets and how effective would they be. Would they be good if used with propecia/avodart. What is your opinion. Please, please reply. Thank you NHI team.

The list of ingredients excluded the kitchen sink, but I doubt that adding it would help with genetic hair loss. If there were deficiencies in diet in any of these areas, it would impact your overall health, of which your hair is clearly an important element. The problem with many of these ingredients is that the scientific connection between their availability to your body and hair loss or hair regrowth is just not there.

For those interested, a list of how much of each supplement is available here. This product appears to only be sold in the UK and/or European markets.

Well medicated to reverse miniaturization, but still not there

Compared to the pictures from past months, my hair looks improved a bit (I mean really a bit). But I still see short, miniaturized hair fall. My medication history: 10 months on fin 1mg, 5 months on dut 0.5mg, 4 months on oral minoxidil 5mg. Why do the miniaturized hairs remain?

Just because you are taking good medications for your hair loss, there is no guarantee that the progressive nature of your hair loss will reverse all of the miniaturization you have. Stay on the coarse, and time will tell you where you will be down the road.

I Am a Well Know Movie Star in My Country and I Had an FUE of 4000 Grafts 3 Weeks Ago. What Is Wrong with Me?

This is a terrible complication. This is called central necrosis, which means that all the skin in the area that you see has died. You need an experienced surgeon to take care of this. This is not an easy situation. It will take months just to get the infection under control, and the skin to cover the defect. He’ll need a lot of work to be able to look normal again.

This is caused by the placement of too many wounds (grafts) in the area, using an instrument that made wounds that were too large, and causing a loss of the blood supply in the area of the scalp that is very sensitive to blood supply interruption. Many patients came to me over the years with this type of complication from inexperienced surgeons. It takes a great deal of wound care by an experience team to treat this kind of problem. Hopefully, you can afford a good surgeon or plastic surgeon with the experience to manage this situation.

Welcome New Readers

Welcome New York Magazine readers!

I wasn’t told ahead of time that this blog would be mentioned in the October 17, 2005 issue of New York Magazine (and on nymetro.com), but what a nice surprise it was. The small article, “McConaughey’s Miracle Hair”, references a post I made several months back about Regenix and my speculation about the hairline of actor Matthew McConaughey. You can find my original post here.

For the benefit of our increased reader base, here’s a quick recap of what this blog is all about. BaldingBlog.com is updated multiple times every weekday (and sometimes on weekends) with questions submitted by the readers and answered by New Hair Institute founder, Dr. William Rassman. In just 6 months, this site already contains over 400 of your questions answered! If you have a hair loss / hair transplantation question you’d like answered on this site, please send me a note via the Contact page.

Thank you for visiting!

Weird bald spot + possible androgenic alopecia. Help me identify this please.

I didn’t post this in the other thread mainly because I have a weird bald spot that I’m hoping someone will help me identify.

A few years ago I went to a hair salon to get my hair curled and somehow the hairdresser burned off some some strands of my hair (one in the front and one in the middle). I only noticed it weeks later when the one in the front was just standing out up in the air (it looked weird lol). Around the same time I realized I had a weird bald spot in my scalp. Until this day I’m not sure if it was caused by the blow dryer/curling iron the hairdresser used or if it happened naturally. I still have this bald spot. And I’m saying “the hairdresser used” because I don’t curl or flat iron or blow dryer my hair at all. That was a rare thing and I did it for an event. So now I don’t know if this is part of the alopecia or if somehow the hair root was burned and that’s why it’s not growing back. Does anyone recognize what this is?

Also I feel like my hairline is receding but I do notice some baby hairs growing at the same time. The middle part of my hair is significantly thinning over the past couple of years. Is this androgenic alopecia? And is the bald spot related to this? Should I start treatment and do I have keep doing it for the rest of my life (cue panic mode).

I attached pictures from different distances. Please excuse the dandruff and the frizz (trust me, I’m trying to get ride of it). Thank you so much for your help!

If this is new, you should see a dermatologist who will perform dermoscopy on your to find out if you have any disease in this area. You might have had a partial burn to the scalp that could cause it, but the loss is uniform

Weightlifting = Accelerated Balding?

Hi Sir,

I have been doing weight lifting exercises for the last one year, I heard that weight lifting exercises increase the testosterone levels by 40%; it will in turn produce 40% more DHT, there by baldness accelerate. I like to be a body builder, please suggest me.

I also heard that finasteride helps to decelerate bald ness by 30% only,as it inhibit 5AR-2 by 70%, but, how can I stop, the baldness aggression, more than 90%,

I would like to ask you two options, which one is better to supress baldness as much as possible

  1. Taking finasteride two tabs (morning & night)
  2. Taking Dutasteride

Please suggest me. Waiting for reply…

Thanks

The data on dutasteride for treating hair loss is not available although many doctors feel it is more effective than finasteride. The dose response relationship between finasteride and hair growth shows that the maximum impact occurs at the 1mg level. There is no evidence to show that the higher dose is better, but other than sexual side effects, there is no problem doubling the dose.

I did have a patient come into my office today who was on Propecia for a year with no sexual side effects and then switched to Dutasteride (Avodart) about a year ago with significant libido and Erectile dysfunction reported. This is not an unusual report, but he personally did not care about his sex drive, while most of my patients do express sex as one of their priorities and would not accept the decreased libido.

With regard to weightlifting, I am unaware of any direct connection to normal increases in testosterone from physical activity and hair loss. Many of the hair loss related complaints tend to come from men who take supplements that have some steroid type substance in it.

Weight Training and Hair Loss Linked?

Hi,
I have read of reports that British scientist have linked weigh training to hair loss. Would you know if this is legitimate and if so would it effect individuals who are not genetically susceptible to hair loss. Here are some links: The Sun and UPI

Regards

Do most bodybuilders look bald to you? Do most men at gyms look more bald to you? You are asking me my opinion on an article from a gossip tabloid from the UK that features nude girls on page 3. Moreover, the articles reference that scientists have concluded this exercise/hair loss link, but do not quote a source. Both articles have the same single quote from a medical group with no published study or even a scientist’s name to attach the quote to.

The most common cause of balding in men is genetic. Personally, I’d rather be fit and in shape rather than flabby, fat, and bald… so both Dr. Pak and I work out to address the fat issue, and both of us take Propecia for tackling balding.

Weeks After Hair Transplant, I Had an Impact Injury On My Scalp

i had a hard impact injury to the top of my head after 5 or 6 weeks after transplant surgery. I had a big bump on top and a small amount of bleeding. I was wondering what the chances of damage to the implants. Do you think I should be that concerned about this accident? Thanks so much for your comments and advice on hair transplants.

Since the injury occurred 5-6 weeks after your hair transplant, I do not think that it will be any risk to the grafts. Of course, if you have concerns and are able to make a follow-up appointment with your surgeon, that would be the best thing to do (at least for peace of mind).

Wearing a Hat After FUE Surgery

Hi there,
I am wanting to go for the FUE procedure in Thailand to have 1500 grafts in my crown and two temples. I only have one week of work and have 5 or 6 days to recover before returning to work. I don’t want anyone to notice so i would like to wear a hat or beanie and for health and safety i must wear a safety hat at work. Will this effect the result of the outcome of the procedure or how long must i wait until i can wear a hat. Thank you.

You should ask this question to the doctor who is going to do the surgery. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to the person that will be performing a permanent cosmetic procedure on your scalp. Have an open dialog!

Generally, after the transplants have passed the 3-14 day period and there is no scabbing, then wearing a hat should not be a problem provided that it does not rub on the recipient area.
