Finasteride and Alcohol

Has your relationship with alcohol changed since being on fin? Personally I used to drink a lot and now I kind of dislike drinking and only drink once in a while. Not sure if this is a rare reaction or even caused by fin.

Drinking with finasteride is not a problem

Finasteride after transplants?

For the post-op users that did the fue transplant and were prescribed finasteride, is the prescription supposed to be taken forever or just for a few month? I am 90% on board and about to book but I’m hesitant bc I don’t want to take a pill forever and I was reading about the side effects and I that pushes me away from it. I know the answer is probably on here but I want to hear from actual, firsthand users.

Thanks for your replies in advance.

If you don’t get sexual or other side effects, then since genetic hair loss is progressive, I generally advise patients to stay on it for life. It has the advantage when you are older, of reducing the risk of prostate cancer by 25% in addition to slowing down the hair loss that is almost always progressive.

Finasteride After 18 Months

What do you mean that after 18 months of finasteride it wont fully stop hair loss anymore and just slow down? i thought finasteride efficiency never deteriorates for decades

Finasteride will not hold off hair loss forever, but it does slow it down for many, many years in some men.

Finasteride After 10 Years

Hello dr Rassman, i’m sure you have read the 10 years old finasteride study being conducted on 118 men. It was found that 10 years later 86% of men had the same hair compared to the baseline. Do you believe this is true from your experience?

The uncontrolled study you’re referring to is this — Finasteride, 1 mg daily administration on male androgenetic alopecia in different age groups: 10-year follow-up.

And to answer your question — yes. I don’t know if my percentages would line up exactly since I haven’t done the statistical analysis, but this drug is very effective at stabilizing hair loss as I see it on a daily basis in the patients I’ve been treating (some for over 10 years).

Finasteride – Does it affect spermatogenesis and pregnancy?

This question and answer is taken from the College of Family Physicians of Canada and it accurately addresses the question.

QUESTION: A few women have asked me whether Finasteride, taken by their partners for male pattern baldness, will affect their pregnancies. The product monograph is very alarming: it sounds as if even handling the medication could cause harm, especially to a male fetus. Should a man stop taking Finasteride if his partner is planning pregnancy or is pregnant? What is the risk to the fetus if its mother accidentally handles crushed or broken tablets?

ANSWER: To date, there are no reports of adverse pregnancy outcomes among women exposed to Finasteride. Taking 1 mg of Finasteride daily did not have any clinically significant effect on men’s semen. Absorption through the skin while handling tablets is extremely unlikely to cause fetal exposure or harm. There is no reason to discontinue the drug. Motherisk is currently following up women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy and whose partners are taking Finasteride.

Publication: Finasteride. Does it affect spermatogenesis and pregnancy?

Topical finasteride for the treatment of male androgenetic alopecia and female pattern hair loss: a review of the current literature

Received 07 May 2020, Accepted 30 May 2020, Accepted author version posted online: 13 Jun 2020, Published online: 26 Jun 2020

Background: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a frequently encountered dermatological concern that impacts a patient’s self-esteem and quality of life. Finasteride is a selective 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that has been approved for the treatment of male AGA and the off-label use in female pattern hair loss (FPHL); however, its adverse effects may limit its use. Topical finasteride is a new formulation that aims to decrease complications caused by oral administration.

Objective: This review assesses the pharmacology, current therapeutic use, and safety of topical finasteride for the treatment of AGA and FPHL.

Methods: A PubMed search was conducted to include all English language articles on topical finasteride from January 1992 to January 2020.

Results: A total of 33 articles including 28 topical finasteride related articles and five AGA related articles were included in this review. Multiple studies on topical finasteride as the treatment for male AGA and FPHL showed positive results with a favorable safety profile.

Conclusions: Topical finasteride is a promising therapeutic option. We emphasize the importance of continued research for the establishment of a novel therapeutic agent.

I Have Been on Finasteride for 4 Days and Have These Side Effects!

I am sick to my stomach and vomit often. I have diarrhea, pain in my shoulder, and have lost strength in my hands. What is happening to me?

It sounds like you are having a panic type of symptoms, possibly from taking the drug. I would consider stopping the medication and seeing what happens.

Pictures are worth 1000 words. Finasteride produced nice results in a relatively short time; however, I might question if the photograph is really telling the story as the results could be hair length alone.
