Fertility and finasteride in men

If my sperm count is reduced, does it go back to normal if you stop the drug to have a child?

If you have a fertility problem related to your sperm count from finasteride, you can expect that it might take months to return to normal. In the following publication: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3205531/, the authors state: “A patient on finasteride (1 mg) for 1 year, diagnosed with oligospermia (impaired spermatogenesis) 5 years earlier, was found to have increased semen volume immediately after cessation of finasteride and his sperm concentration improved to more than 10 × 106/ml about 4 months later.” You should read more of this publication.

Female with Minoxidil and finasteride (photo)

This woman used 5% minoxidil topically applied to the scalp and took oral finasteride as well. She runs risk of pregnancy with finasteride and it is possible that these results would have happened with minoxidil use alone.

Female with Hair Recession

I saw your post on January 20 with the brow lift repair. It was amazing. I am a 34 female and my problem is that my corners have disappeared like a man’s corners. Is that common and can it be fixed like the example you showed?

You are referring to the post I made titled Female Hairline Restoration After Brow Lift (with Photos).

Corner hair loss is actually very common in women, but it is often not complete. The corners will thin while the rest of the hair (in the non-genetic balding female) will stay strong, making the thinning more noticable. Yes, the female hair line can be created just like the patient in that blog posting from January 20. However, I must caution you — you must be very careful in chosing your doctor, for the art of female hairline rebuilding is difficult unless the doctor is exceptionally trained in building such hairlines.

This is a young woman who was started on finasteride one year ago and minoxidil 3 months ago. The change is dramatic. Of great concern is the possibility of pregnancy while on finasteride which she must avoid or develop a child with possibly sexual identification problems.

Female Traction Alopecia

I have a full head of hair which is shoulder length. However due to many years of wearing a pony tail, I have developed a mild traction alopecia around the neck line and slightly behind the ears. Because of this, I am not able to wear my hair up, or side swept which limits my hairstyles. I was wondering if I may perhaps benefit from follicular hair transplant?

Tight pony tails or ‘pig-tails’ can cause traction alopecia (hair loss from constant pulling). Of interest, the ‘falls’ that women use to add fullness to hair are a frequent cause of hair loss in women who use them to make their hair appear fuller. The more the use, the thinner the hair gets and the cycle of more use to treat thinner hair produces more thin hair.

With that said, the traction alopecia may not be permanent, that is, if you stop putting the traction on it. To find out, you would need to stop using a ‘pony tail’ for at least 6-8 months. What hair does not come back is probably permanent. There is a difference in the hair at the nape of the neck (which often has a different genetic ‘permanence’) then other scalp hair. Hair in the nape of the neck is generally more fragile and can be lost with stress (like traction).

We have extensive experience with treating temple hair and hair at the nape of the neck. The neck transplants were usually secondary to scarring from flap procedures which were surgically induced. The temple hair has been done in many, many patients wanting to move the temples forward or replace them from thinning. Send some pictures to me and I would be happy to give you an opinion. female to male transgender with hair loss

I am FtM transgender, and I have noticed a lot of transgender men in their mid-20s tend to get sudden and extreme hair loss due to hormone therapy (testosterone). Right now I’m not really experiencing much hair loss, possibly because I am on low-dose T, but I would like to prevent hair loss before it even starts.

Is there anything I can do to be proactive about hair loss? I currently only shampoo only 2-3 times a week, I condition daily, and I do 5-10 minute scalp massages daily. Are there any products I could incorporate into my hair routine?

Drugs like finasteride are critical but it most likely will not be enough to counter the impact of exogenous testosterone

Female thinning (photo)

I have been getting thinner and thinner. I am a woman age, 34. Any suggestions?

Women with progressive thinning require a trichoscopic examination where the doctor magnifies the hairs on the scalp and looks for miniaturization. Some women just develop premature Age Related Thinning where there will be no miniaturized hairs on the scalp. In ART, the best treatment is to use thickeners iin your shampoo and conditioner which will increase the thickness of the hair shafts as it is forced to absorb water. An alternative is to use either topical concealers (like Tokkik) ot Scalp Micropigmentation (a tattoo of the scalp make to look like cut hairs). If your hairs are miniaturized in some areas, you need a hair specialist to assess that for you.

I am a 23 year old female with thinning hair in the front of my head. My mother and grandmother had it also. What can I do about it?

If the thinning is confined to the frontal part of your scalp and does not extend back to your crown, and if your donor area does not show significant miniaturization, and if you don’t have a scalp disease such as FFA or LLP, then I would consider you a reasonable transplant candidate as some women lose their hair in the front for genetic reasons. I would want to examine you first to make sure that you do not have other causes for the hair loss and that your donor area is healthy.

Female Started Losing Her Hair at 13

i am a 17 year old (almost 18) female and have been experiencing hair loss since i was about 13. i used to have thick curly hair and now its very thin, i have to wear it half up in a clip to keep the thinning spots hidden (even though my whole head is thinning). my father is going bald and his brother and father are completely bald. i do not have any thyroid or hormone problems nor do i have any iron problems. i have been to dermitologists and they perscribed me monoxidil which i used when i was approx. 14 and stopped after about a half a year to a year because i hated using it and my hair loss was not completely noticble. now at 17 its pretty bad and i began using the monoxidil again, i started about a month ago. no one can explain my hair thinning and why a lot of it falls out after i shower and brush it. at first when i was 13-14 i didnt care because it was not noticable, but now i cant take it, im in high school almost uniiveristy and i dont know what to do! its been happening for 5 years without slowing or stopping..is there anything you can offer that will help me? pleasee im desperate, all my friends have thick hair and i hate the fact that i dont and mine falls out and is noticibly thin.

You have done your research concerning female hair loss. Have the dermatologist biopsy your scalp to see if you have an inflammatory process occuring which cause your hair loss. Find out if there are there any miniaturized hairs in the donor area, which is in the back of your head, and how much miniaturization you have everwhere else on your scalp. Are there any noticeble spots on your head? Has your hair loss been stabilized or has it become more progressive? I am limited to what I can do over the internet. Be sure to get a good, caring doctor to help guide you through what you are now experiencing.
