Female Hair Loss from Taking Accutane

Hello I am a 25 yr old female and I took accutane two years ago and a couple of months ago for two months only due to a money run out. I have been experienced some hair loss more than normal. Is it possible to recieve a hair transplant for this problem or drugs such as avodor or proscar.

Accutane is known to cause hair loss in some people. To date, there are no FDA approved oral medications for female hair loss. There are many, many risks for women taking finasteride (Proscar/Propecia) or dutasteride (Avodart), and it is highly recommended that you do not do this, particularly at your age. Furthermore if Accutane was the cause of your hair loss, drugs would not help. You should wait at least a year to see if your hair grows back. If your loss is not Accutane related, minoxidil might help.

Female Hair Loss from Iron Deficiency?

I am 29 years old and am losing hair. After the shower I can see lot of hair fallen around. In my diet, I dont include iron-rich food. Would it be a possible reason for hair loss? Can you suggest a good diet for preventing hair loss?

Speak to your doctor and have your iron levels measured. This is an important step if you think that you have an iron deficiency, a common occurrence in women. Historically, women needed to eat meat to replace the iron they lose from menstruation which is why iron deficiency is not uncommon in women. A good general diet with red meat may be all that you need if your iron levels are bordering on the low level, otherwise, see you doctor and get his/her recommendation. If you have hair loss, then as I’ve suggested many times in this blog, you need a good examination for miniaturization to get the best diagnosis for cause.

Female Hair Loss from Graves’ Disease?

(female)
I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (hyperthyroidism) a few years ago and it has caused hair loss. I’ve been taking prenatal vitamins to help prevent the loss but it is still thinning fast. Is there any help out there for me? Desperate for Answers

Other than getting control of the Graves’ disease, I don’t know of any specific treatment for hair loss resulting from it. If you have the disease under control, the hair will likely come back! Give it a full year.

Female Hair Loss and No Family History to Look At

Hello,
I have been losing my hair for the past 2 years. It started falling out in droves when I was on Ortho Lo and started taking Bupriprion, then Lexapro then back to Buproprion for 2 years. I as well was getting my entire hair dyed for about 5 years. I am Korean but don’t have any genetic history to go off (am adopted). Am at my wits end. Supposed to go to Kaiser dermo soon. Do you think all the above contributed to rapid hair loss?

Sometimes a certain pattern emerges which could point to genetics, and other times it may be a medical issues or medications issues. There are many reports online that bupropion (Wellbutrin) causes hair loss, and I’ve previously written about Lexapro and hair loss. Many anti-depressants have hair loss risks… and depression itself could be a cause. Among the possible side effects of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, I see “loss of scalp hair” listed. So really, there’s a number of things that could be the cause, or it could be completely unrelated to medication.

Female hair loss can be difficult to pinpoint a cause, as there are many potential reasons for the hair thinning in women. Some of those reasons include anemia, thyroid disease, connective tissue disease, gynecological conditions, and emotional stress. Hair loss in women is a complex problem. Your stress may be as much of a factor as medications that you may be taking. Please see an expert in-person in the hair field for analysis of this problem.

Female Hair Loss After Taking HGH

I was going out of town to work on a strenous work project. I decided to take hgh when I started the job. While I was away, my hairline began receding and itching. I didn’t realize it was the HGH until too late, ten weeks of use. I am female and now must hide the front of my head with scarves and wraps. I’m using rogaine. Is there anything that can reverse hgh hair loss?

You may have done permanent damage, but you will not know for a full 8 months from the time you stopped the HGH (which can cause hair loss in some people). A hair transplant may have some value if you do not recover. Unfortunately, you’ll just have to wait and see.

Female Hair Loss After Stopping Prednisone

(female) I was put on 40 milligrams of prednisone after I got out of the hospital from a major infection… ulcerative colitis. I was on predisone for a month. Well, a month later after I stopped it, I starting losing my hair. Could this be caused by the prednisone? (I was also on Asacol too.)

The entire stressful experience may have precipitated a telogen effluvium. Hopefully it will reverse on its own in 4-8 months. Both medications and the illness you had could have caused the hair loss.

Female Hair Loss After Lap Band Surgery

Great blog, Dr. Rassman! Quick question. My Cousin had the Lap-Band surgery in August 2011. Since then she has lost almost 60 lbs. She has also lost almost all of the hair in the front half of her scalp. Does this hair have a chance to return if she supplements with a vitamin or has her Lap-Band loosened so that she can eat more? She never had hair loss before the surgery. Thanks!

Women who lose hair from rapid weight loss may have accelerated a genetic pattern for hair loss that is present. These women may never return to their preoperative hair thickness, but some of it may reverse. If there is no genetic pattern present, then the hair loss may reverse upon balancing her diet.

Female Hair Loss After Knee Surgery

I am a 26 year old female, just had knee surgery last year june 2005. I have been experiencing a tremendous amount of hair loss since then. I’ve read that it could be because of the anethesia, so, my question is how long after will this continue.

One of the manifestations (or presentations) of female genetic hair loss is that some women have hair that sheds easily with stress and then comes back. You will have to wait this out.

Female Hair Loss After Hysterectomy

I am 54 years old and had a total hysterectomy 1.5 years ago. I started HRT right away (premarin), but it gave me migraines. Three months ago my Dr ran blood work and started me on HRT natural cream, by prescription, which contains triest, testosterone and progesterone. I noticed within the last 2 months that my hair has gone from VERY thick to very thin. Now I am noticing that the top front of my head is looking even thinner, perhaps balding. I also take 1 mg of Adavant daily since my hysterectomy, and 300 mg of neurontin for night
sweats/heat flashes. Can any of this be causing my hair loss?

Many of the things you mention, including the surgery and the medications, can be the cause of your hair loss. You need to meet in-person with an expert on the subject to (1) stop what is happening to you, and (2) try to reverse it.
