Female Alopecia Areata

A female reader asks…

I have Hashimoto’s Syndrome and diagnosed alopecia areata. The hair on the crown of my head is not diminishing as fast as that around the face and all around the back of my head. What options do I have? I feel I will shortly have to wear a wig permanently. Is there anything that can be done?

Hashimoto’s Syndrome and diagnosed alopecia areata are autoimmune diseases which are attacking the hair follicles in your situation. If the disease can not be controlled, then the hair will continue to fall out. Sometimes, these diseases are self limiting, but your doctor will be in a better position to judge this for you.

Feeling bad about who I am because of hair loss

A couple of years ago, I had sudden hair loss which triggered bad anxiety and depression. So much so that I couldn’t function. Last summer I had a dream job between semesters at school, but when I was there I couldn’t think straight my anxiety and stress was so bad that it seemed to make the hair loss worse. I subsequently had to quit school for a year and put all my money into getting a hair transplant. Now, one year later, I do have a better head of hair but I hate how much I have allowed hair loss to affect me and I regret that I let it affect me so much. Is this normal?

A World Champion weight lifter told me that he was able to control everything in his life, his body, his health, his education, his friends but the one stumbling block for him was his hair loss as he had no control over it. Many years ago, he had a hair transplant by a doctor who he said “mutilated him”. Yes, he had terrible hair transplants and my job was to fix it. After two surgeries, he looked good and we became close friends still to this day. He has met my entire family and even taught self-defense to some of my kids when they were in their late teens.

Hair transplants, in your case, did help you with a problem that was out of your control and it is a credit to you that you took charge of your life. It takes courage to get a surgery to deal with hair loss because sometimes there is no other option.

I feel more sub-human the more I bald

Balding so young, I feel like genetic trash. People treat me differently too, well they did. I got some regrowth and it’s absolutely disgusting how people treat you better when you improve your looks. Looks are everything. Anyways, I want to be hopeful for the “treatments” of the future, but history tells us a different story of hope then disappointment, as seen by browsing hair loss forums years ago. Everyone at my college has a thick NW1. Not one balding man. It’s rare this young. I have realized I am subhuman trash, I know my place now. If I ever go completely bald (I probably will) it’s game over.

You should see a doctor and you can probably address your problem, one way or the other. There are many good solutions including medications, Scalp Micropigmentation or hair transplantation. If I were to see you, I would work to get you to manage your hair loss in a productive way. My consultations are free and you can contact me over the internet at wrassman@newhair.com and send photos along with the email.

“2 case reports where notable improvement in AA was observed after FMT was performed for recurrent CDI. Further study of gut microbiota in patients with autoimmune alopecia may elucidate disease mechanisms and provide evidence to support clinical trials of FMT in this population for whom treatment options are currently limited.”

Fear of Propecia’s Side Effects

hi doctor,
Iam 22 years old male and my hair has been thinning for about 3 years. I took many medications especially vitamins ( biotine B5, zinc, Durance, Nutri-cap,……….), only the zinc had reduced the hair loss but not the thinning. I used minoxidil 5% but I had an excessive dandruff on my scalp ( even Nizoral didnt eliminate it. I didnt try proprcia since to its sexual sideeffects and others bad feedbacks about sexual disfunctions ( btw my friend had a bad reduction in his libdo and a raise in testesterone)….. Any advice please professor to any alternatives to stop my hair thinning.
Thanks and I appareciate your effort…

Just because your friend had a decreased libido with Propecia, does not mean that you will. If you try it and you don’t like it, you can stop it at any time and the problem will correct in a week or so. It is the BEST approach to hair loss in a young man, and there are no other proven therapies that work as well on young men. Alternatively, you can become bald, but then it you do, transplantation will be your only recourse.

Try it; you might find that Propecia is not a bad experience at all. Very few of my patients tell me that they feel anything at all on the drug. Some reported an increased sex drive. Men are highly suggestive, so if you truly believe that Propecia will reduce your libido, then it might do just that.

Fear of Hair Transplant Surgery Two Weeks Away (from Reddit)

Most of my patients actually enjoy the surgical experience. We use drugs to bring the patient into a light sleep and then perform the local anesthesia, so they don’t feel it. I always tell the patient to think about taking a trip to Hawaii. Last week, a patient told me he preferred Cancun, and when I was doing the surgery he was moving like he was dancing. It made the surgery a bit more difficult, but at the end of the surgery, I asked about his trip to Cancun and if remembered dancing at the beach. He said he somehow went to Hawaii but did remember that he was dancing with beautiful women at the beach in Hawaii. We all laughed. Don’t worry, the surgery will be a great experience.

Fear of Finasteride and Fear of Losing Hair

Hi doctor, I’ve sent you a message on Reddit and you told me to send you an mail.
I’ll try to be as brief, as hard as it is, about my situation is this:
I’ve basically had really good hair all my life, at least till I turned 18. I want to say I have a good hairline, and a fairly good crown. My hairline hasn’t receeded much, if at all, for the past few years. My main problem is that my hair is thinning in in a very unusual pattern. Since I had long hair, in most of my teenage-hood, it was hard for me to even notice it was thinning – the long hair usually masked it. I found out when I got drafted ~9-10 months ago and had to get a buzzcut – that’s when I noticed some spots on my head are significantly thinner than the rest of the head. Especially at the middle-front of my head, there’s practically a hole of seriously thin hair. However, growing my hair to 4-5cm in length is enough to mask it. The thing about my thin hair is that I don’t notice any shedding, and a year a go it seemed perfectly normal. If I run my hand through my hair it will usually take out 0-3 hairs. Same in the shower. I even remembered worrying about my thin hair before I got drafted because it used to look really bad when it was wet, but when I googled it people said it’s perfectly normal.
Basically, I want to get on Propecia, but I am terrified of the side effects, especially since it will be harder to monitor while I’m in the army, which is for at least a couple more years, but I don’t want to wait until then.
The reason I’m so confused is because:
1. The hair is thinning out in a very strange fashion.
2. The thinning doesn’t seem very aggressive – my hair is maybe slightly thinner than it was a year ago.
3. I remember noticing the back of my head was fairly thin, but this was 3+ years a go. It’s as if my hair is thinning in episodes, I don’t even know anymore.
4. I have or had lots of bad skin conditions, like acne, inflamed pores on my face, and the most dominant is seborrheic dermatitis, characterized by red, flaky patches on my entire face and scalp. I used to treat it with Ketozol.
Would love to hear what you have to say, really, any honest opinion would help me so much as this thinning has been wrecking my mental health as of late. I don’t know what to do anymore. I would really appreciate your help.
Thanks ahead,
The chance of sexual side effects are only 4% at most; however, you can talk yourself into these sexual side effects all too easily, then it would be 100%. It is tied to your attitude. Most of my patients take the drug when I recommend it and very few get sexual side effects (about 2-4%). Statistics are what they are, and they are reliable. Most men take their daily pill and don’t notice anything. Nonetheless, reading the many negative posts certainly doesn’t help, but the statistics should help you put the sexual concerns into perspective.

FDA warns the public and doctors of ‘bogus cancer cures’ being promoted

FDA Warns Against Bogus Cancer Treatments Sold On Internet

ABC World News Tonight (4/25, story 12, 0:25, Muir) reported the FDA has issued warnings to 14 companies that sell “more than 65 allegedly illegal cancer cures” without FDA approval.

The AP (4/25) reports that the agency “says these products, mostly sold on websites and social media, can be harmful, waste money and result in people not getting approved, effective treatments.”

CNN (4/25, Tinker) reports, “Products included in” the “crackdown include pills, creams, ointments, oils, drops, syrups and teas.”

The Washington Post (4/25, McGinley) reports that Douglas Stearn, director of the FDA’s Office of Enforcement and Import Operations, said, “Consumers should not use these or similar unproven products because they may be unsafe and could prevent a person from seeking an appropriate and potentially lifesaving cancer diagnosis or treatment.”

Comment: People don’t like bad news, so if they have a cancer and the doctor tells them that their cancer is not curable, they often seek other solutions and go anywhere and almost to anyone that promises a cure. People can’t deal with the idea that they may have an incurable cancer, but going outside the normal proper medical channels may accelerate their death. This is really a “BUYER’s BEWARE” situation.

FDA Warns Lexington About Misbranding and Falsely Marketing the LaserComb

What do you think of these Hairmax Lasercomb FDA warning letters? Does this mean the thing really doesn’t work…though a lot of it is pretty technical reading it sounds as though the thing doesn’t work…am I reading it wrong? What are your thoughts? Can you interpret it better? Here’s the link:

FDA.gov – Lexington International, LLC – Warning Letter

LasercombFrom what I gather, Lexington started started selling other models of their Laser Comb that were never cleared by the FDA, and yet they were inferring that they were FDA cleared. My favorite part of that letter states, “These changes could significantly affect the safety or effectiveness of these devices and therefore, pursuant to 21, CFR 807.81 (a)(3)(i), new 510(k) submissions are required in order to legally market these devices.” So the devices differ with regard to power use and some other parameters listed in their letter, and explains why Lexington’s site says the SE model is not for sale in the US anymore.

Also, the device was cleared for use in men, and Lexington was marketing it to women when they couldn’t legally do so. That explains why Lexington changed their site information to say, “At this stage the HairMax LaserComb is only indicated for male use. A clinical study for use in females has been completed and Lexington has submitted a new 510K to the FDA for this indication.

That letter you sent the link to shows how the FDA monitors such products and processes. Unfortunately, this letter is from May of this year (although it was just made available on the FDA site yesterday), and I’m unable to find any follow-up. I know representatives from Lexington read this site, and they can feel free to respond if they want to clear the air.
