Eyebrow Transplants (with Photos)

Is it true that eyebrow transplants do not behave like eyebrow hair?

Hair for eyebrow transplants come from the head. As such, they retain their head hair characteristics. There is some need to match head hair and eyebrow hair to see that it is appropriate to use it. This matching is critical. In the afro hair, the hair from the scalp is kinky, and if that hair is moved to the eyebrow, it might not behave as you would hope and the kinky nature of the head hair may not look right in the eyebrow. If the shafts of head hair are too thick, it is possible to thin down the shaft thickness in the hands of an experienced surgeon. Most significantly, the eyebrow hair will grow long and it requires trimming a few times a week because it will grow out ½ inch per month. Not trimmed, it could obtain a length of 3 feet (or whatever the maximum hair length might grow to), which is something that will not look normal.

Here is an example of a patient who had eyebrow transplants in the medial part of his eyebrow. He had forgotten to trim it for almost a month before he came in.

The photo on the left is before; the photo in the middle is 6 months after (with long eyebrow hairs); the photo on the right is also 6 months after (with eyebrows trimmed).

The patient had less than 20 single hair grafts in the area where the long hair is seen. Click each photo to enlarge.

Eyebrow Transplants, Revisited

Here’s two more eyebrow transplant-related emails I’ve received…

In 2002 I cut my eye brows off. But they grew back very thin some parts did even grow back, like the ends. Only the inner part would grow but not so thick. Anyway to date they are not growing at all. My hair line has also thinned out about an inch. I do not know what is going on but I am tired of drawing it on. Please help.

Eyebrows can be successfully transplanted, if the eyebrows you had have not returned after a couple of years. The eyebrow hair is taken from the scalp hair, and as such will have to be trimmed about three times a week and cut on an angle for hair shape. I posted a blog entry recently about this: Eyebrow Transplants. You need to be evaluated for the hairline loss. Read my responses addressing female hair loss, as they do apply to you.

I am considering eyebrow hair transplantation and I have many questions. Does having permanent makeup interfere with the procedure? Should it be removed first or will it cause scarring to the follicle? Also, does the transplant have to follow the original eyebrow hairline or will it grow in any follicle (if I wanted it slightly raised for a more youthful appearance for instance)? Do eyebrow transplants yield a high success rate? I noticed you listed some special summer prices but they were specified for the strip method. What is the cost for the FOX method. Finally, I live near Riverside Ca, zip code 92313, is there an office near me?

Permanent makeup is cosmetic tattooing and is permanent by its nature. It will not impact an eyebrow hair transplant. You should be evaluated first, before any surgery is considered. Eyebrows can be angled for more lift, but it is difficult to angle them for less lift. The success of eyebrow transplants are high. NHI’s summer fees have been reduced by 10% but the FUE approach has not been discounted and still is priced at about twice the price per hair/graft as a traditional strip method of transplantation. Our closest office to you would be in the Beverly Hills area.

My Eyebrow Transplant Sticks up and Grows in Crazy Directions

The single most common problem with eyebrow transplants is that they grow in the wrong direction or stick up, looking unnatural. Eyebrow transplants using scalp hair requires a special skill in identifying the ‘bend’ that is natural in each transplanted hair. So when the hair is put in by the surgical team, the angle at which the hair is deposited should follow the natural curve of the hair. It also must be put in laying flat and consistent with your natural eyebrow hairs. Too many surgeons, without considerable experience, can’t seem to get either of these techniques right, and if they don’t, the eyebrow hairs stick out rather than laying flat as they should. In your case, the darker hair and a slightly bushier eyebrow might help you frame your face, but of course it is your call as to what you want to look like.

Eyebrow Transplant of 189 Grafts (with Photos)

Hi doctors,
Are eyebrow transplants something that men have done? My eyebrows are not that thin but I am very particular about them, border line obsessive. Can I have maybe a couple hundred grafts done just to fill them in around the edges? Is this something that looks good when all is said and done?

Yes, we’ve transplanted the eyebrows of many men. I have a patient that sounds like what you’re describing, with great looking results that strengthened the overall brow by filling in the edges (and thankfully he’s given me permission to share his photos below).

This man had a eyebrow transplant procedure of 189 grafts about two years ago.

I Had an Eyebrow Transplant and Much of the Hair That Was There Fell Out. What Should I Do?

I am sure that this possibility was discussed in your informed consent document, and it should have been discussed with by your doctor. If it does not come back in 12 months or so after the eyebrow transplant, I would assume that it is lost. If I were your surgeon, I would bring you back to surgery and make it right with you at no charge, as I always attend to complications that occur as part of any surgery I do.

Eyebrow Hair Stopped Growing After Waxing!

(female)
Hello! i use to go and get my eyebrows waxed. The last time i did was about 7 months ago and every since then they haven’t grown back, they are very thin (it looks like i dont have any eyebrows) and there are a few bald spots.. What could of caused that? and is there anyway i can get them to grown back?

If you pluck out your eyebrows all the time, eventually some hairs may never grow back. Think of it as causing small trauma to the hair follicle over and over and eventually the hair follicle will stop producing hair. Wait it out for a full year. If it does not return, you can have a hair transplant to put them back, using hair from your scalp.

Eyebrow Hair Loss

Hi,
Please could you give me some advice on how I can encourage new eyebrow hair growth. My eyebrows have lately become very sparse. I am very concerned because no products have been working for me. I have used olive oil and bought Talika Eyebrow Lipocils and used the product, I used it for 28 days and it did not stimulate any new hair growth.
Please could you help me and send me some advice?
Thankyou.

Eyebrow hair loss can be from a series of causes. The most common is from plucking the eyebrow in women who try to shape it and eventually develop traction alopecia resulting in permanent loss of the eyebrow hair. A series of genetic and autoimmune causes also exist, so you might want to see a specialist who can look for miniaturization or the side effects from plucking which are very characteristic. There are no magic potions for stimulating eyebrow hair, though Minoxidil might help. Hair transplants work very nicely but have the disadvantage of growing longer than the normal eyebrow hair which means that they must be cut a few times a week.

Eyebrow Conditioner Caused My Eyebrows to Fall Out

Hi, I’m 22/M and have had thinning eyebrows for the past 6 months. I used a product called Brow Boost “conditioner” from Billiondollarbrows.com that was suppose to thicken eyebrows and promote new growth. After using the product for a week I was seeing new hairs growing in and old hairs getting thicker. Then on day 8 my eyebrows started to fall out. I discontinued use of the product 3 days ago and I’m still loosing eyebrow hair and eyelashes as well. The manufacturer gave me no help they could only say that “its extremely rare to loose your eyebrows using our product”. Can you please give me some advice, short term and long term? How long am I going to keep loosing my eyebrows for?

Conditioners usually have one or some of the following ingredients: moisturizers, reconstructors, acidifiers, thermal protectors, glossers and/or oils. Some of these will add small molecules to the hair shafts. I don’t know what the contents of the conditioner you used on your eyebrows are, but they shouldn’t cause any permanent damage to hair. It is difficult to say whether you are losing hair due to this new conditioner or this is only prolongation of your baseline loss. If any doubt, stop the product and hopefully your eyebrows will grow back in a few months. A series of autoimmune and genetic causes may be responsible for loss of eyebrows. If your eyebrow doesn’t grow back in 8-12 months, you can consult a hair transplant surgeon. Hair transplantation works nicely on eyebrows, but it has the disadvantage of growing longer than the normal eyebrow hair (since it is moved from the back of the scalp) and the hair must be cut every few days.

Extreme Shedding After Taking Avodart

Dr. Rassman

I’m male, early thirties and in the early stages of hair loss.

I am experiencing extreme shedding and I need your help. I took avodart for 6 weeks in January 2007. Because of the shedding I stopped it, but now it still continues as strong as ever, even thought it’s been almost 8 weeks since I took any. I’ve been losing about 200 hairs every day in the shower. 3 months ago I had so much more hair, what is going on? I heard that shedding can happen, but not like this. Could this have caused telogen effluvium, or something else? Please help doc, I don’t know what to do.

While Avodart (dutasteride) is currently being studied by the FDA for the treatment of hair loss, it is not yet approved for such treatment. I have heard others who have had some increased hair loss after starting Propecia, but as they continue taking it the benefits (more hair growth or stabilization of hair loss) become more evident. You should see a doctor to discuss these issues and get a good diagnosis of your condition before starting any medication regimen.

Extreme dieting and hair loss

I was starving myself for a year+ barely eating and it ruined my hair it’s a lot better then it was a few years ago but it never recovered fully

I have seen that particularly in those men with genetic balding, starvation pushes the Apoptosis of hair follicles.
