Erectile Dysfunction with finasteride studied

The study was released by the Britich Medical Journal which reported that the association of finasteride and Erectile Dysfunction when used for Benigh Proetatic Hypertrophy stated: “Our findings should be reassuring that the risk of erectile dysfunction is not higher for men who are prescribed finasteride or dutasteride for BPH or finasteride 1 mg for alopecia. Clinicians should be aware that the longer a man has BPH, the higher his risk for developing erectile dysfunction,” Katrina Wilcox Hagberg of the Boston Collaborative Drug Surveillance Program at Boston University School of Public Health, told Reuters Health by email.

The same was suggested in men who used the drug for hair loss, which they said “Similarly, in the cohort of men with alopecia (n=12,346), the risk of ED was not increased for users of finasteride compared with unexposed men with alopecia (IRR, 1.03; OR, 0.95).”.

What this says is that these drugs do not cause Erectile dysfunction. I am not sure that I believe this as some of the patients who I ahve treated have reported real one-on-one relationships between ED, libido and the drug finasteride, and when they stopped it, the symptoms always went away.

Here is the article which you can read for yourself. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/869443?nlid=109620_1001&src=WNL_mdplsfeat_161004_mscpedit_urol&uac=90007MX&spon=15&impID=1209180&faf=1

Erectile Dysfunction Comes and Goes, And It Came Back Again.

I have gone back on finasteride. My first go was 1.25 ED and after three weeks I got erectile dysfunction and numb penis. This time, I switched to 0.25mg EOD and again got side effects after 22 days but they disappeared about 13 days later. Now, i am about 7 weeks in and I have gotten erectile dysfunction again and it has persisted for 3 days. Is it normal to get sides and have them go away, then come back again? Do you think I should keep taking finasteride and see if the side effects go away? I know once I stop the side effects go away. I really want stay in finasteride but im afraid to have an erection that is only 70% full.

Sounds like you are not a candidate for this drug. Taking it long term increases the risk of it becoming a permanent side effect

Erectile Dysfunction Can Possibly be Treated with Lifestyle Modifications

In the first journal of the International Society for Sexual Medicine, an article appeared titled, “The Incidence, Prevalence, and Natural History of Erectile Dysfunction“. The article (from Department of Urology, St. James University Hospital, Leeds, UK) covered some important points worth sharing with our readers:

1. “The varying methodologies, definitions, and populations make comparison difficult, but in high-quality studies there is a consistent association with age, and analytical studies suggest an association with cardiovascular risk factors, depression, and lower urinary tract symptoms. There is emerging evidence of a link with smoking and obesity.”

2. “Remission was commoner in younger men, suggesting that in these men psychological and lifestyle factors might be the cause of temporary self-limiting ED.”

3. “These studies also suggest that lifestyle modifications might be helpful in the prevention and treatment of ED.”

Erectile Dysfunction a Red Flag for Mortality, Cardiovascular Events

This isn’t hair loss related, but it is still important medical news —

Red flagIn a recent publication, erectile dysfunction (ED) was found to be a robust predictor of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in men with cardiovascular disease or those with risk factors for cardiac disease. The connection between the blood vessels of the heart and the penis show that the blood vessels of the penis mimic those of the heart when there is significant cardiovascular disease present. These findings were recently published online March 15 in the medical journal called Circulation.

Treatment of cardiac disease, once recognized, can reduce the risks of cardiac death. The findings suggest that ED is a manifestation of cardiovascular risk. They conclude: “ED is a powerful predictor of cardiovascular death and of major cardiovascular events in high-risk patients and represents a symptom of more advanced atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction.

What does this mean? If you have erectile dysfunction, get your heart checked for the presence of advanced heart disease. Taking Viagra may work to solve the ED, but your risk of sudden death is higher amongst men with ED and heart disease. Sudden death is often the first sign of heart disease in 70% of men.

Eqyss MegaTek

Hi Doc:

I am so sorry to bother you again. Can you please tell me if you ever heard of Eqyss Megatek? It is a conditioner & Shampoo for horses that folks claim grows hair stronger & faster. As I have mentioned before, I recently thinned rapidly and I need some help. I am hoping you have heard of this and can comment.

Interestingly, this is the second question I have received on horse hair products (see also: Mane-Tail-Groom Hair Products). I have no practical experience with horse hair products in humans, but from the inquiries I have made, some Europeans who had association with horses know about these products and swear by them. I would add horse hair grooming to what I offer my patients, but they may think that I am a horse’s ass for doing so.

Epidural Steroid with Hair Loss (Report by Patient of Her Experience)

I’ve been reading this website for a while now, trying to gauge how long this would take. I had one Kenalog injection on 12/21/16. In late April, I noticed my hair was falling out everywhere. I had many side effects including 90+ day menstrual cycle, GI problems, skin thinning, male hair growth, swelling all over despite weight loss, and many more. Obviously, no doctors believed this could be the product of one injection, but I know it was.

Well, it’s January 19, 2018 and my hair has finally slowed way down. I’ve lost about 60% of my previous extremely thick and beautiful hair. The texture is slowly returning back to normal. I do have some new growth, but I suspect it’ll take a long time to come back in any meaningful way. To those who are going through the shedding right now and reading this, IT WILL STOP. It just takes a long, long time.

Thanks. It’s good for people to hear stories like yours.

The Entire Family Is Losing Hair

My wife and I and our 6-year-old and 3-year-old are experiencing all the same symptoms. We have owned our house for 8 years and we lived in it for 5 years before we moved out of state for 2 years. We left it the home fully furnished with a neighbor checking in for us every month. We are back living in our house for about a year, and we all started losing our hair 1 week ago. We all noticed that we started losing hair within one week of each other! What is going on? I can’t believe that no one person who has had this problem has not come back to update us! Does this just mean there is no hope for answers and a positive outcome?

There is clearly something that is causing this common problem, such as Black Mold growing in the house or toxic chemicals in the ground or air.

Speak with your doctor and ask to have someone from the department of health to look into it for you. There has to be a cause for this.

How to Ensure Health and Happiness from When You Are Not near a Family Member

If you have someone who is elder and needs help, here is an article sent to me to address this.

Long-Distance Care: Tips On How To Ensure A Loved One Is Healthy And Happy From Afar

When you live far away from a senior loved one, it can be difficult to ensure they receive the care they need and that their emotional needs are met. For many people, trying to plan for a family member from afar is stressful and comes with feelings of guilt because they can’t be there in person.

Fortunately, there are several simple things you can do to help make sure your senior loved one is well taken care of no matter where you live. Nowadays, technology makes it easier than ever to stay informed and maintain a presence in your family members’ lives, even from afar. For seniors who have health issues, mobility issues, or are ready to downsize their home so that they can age-in-place, this is imperative and can help you have more control over the situation.

Here are some of the best ways you can help your loved one.

Communicate with your family

If your family is scattered across the country, it may be hard to pin everyone down to share information and make decisions that will affect your loved one. Keep up communication as much as possible through email or by using an app like Skype so you can talk and see one another at the same time. Set up meetings to discuss any upcoming events or planning that needs to be done. Keeping everyone on the same page will ensure that the bulk of the work won’t fall on any one person’s shoulders.

Get organized…

Whether you have power of attorney for your loved one or are just the most responsible family member, it’s important to get organized and keep all valuable paperwork and info together regarding your loved one. Make copies for yourself so your family member can hold onto the originals, and make copies of any important keys as well so you’ll have access to the home or vehicles should you need it. Keep everything together, in one place.

Arrange for transportation

If you can’t be around to help get your loved one to doctor’s appointments or to go shopping and they don’t drive, arrange for transportation to help them stay independent. Many cities offer free bus rides for seniors, and there are also services offered by hospitals, senior care centers, and assisted living facilities.

You can find more information about arranging transportation for your loved one here.

Find the right apps

There are plenty of apps available for seniors who have a smartphone and feel comfortable using that technology. For instance, you might help your loved one download an app that will help them remember to take their medication or one that monitors and records blood pressure. There’s even an app that will help your loved one keep track of their medical records so there’s no confusion the next time they go to the doctor. Whatever your senior’s needs are, there’s likely an app that will help them with their daily activities.

Help them stay social

Maintaining a healthy, active social life is important for seniors of any age, no matter what their living situation is. For those who have issues with mobility or are battling a health problem, staying social can help boost their self-esteem and give them a sense of purpose, so help your loved one find clubs to join or activities to take part in where they live.

Making sure your senior loved one is healthy and happy isn’t always easy, but with a little planning, there are many ways you can be involved in their life and help them with everyday issues. Keep communication open and be prepared to ensure your family member will stay safe and enjoy each day.

Libido and Hair Loss

My husband is considering a transplant operation as one way to address his waning male libido – and yes, he has thinned quite a bit since he turned 50. A friend told him that since he (the friend) had hair transplants he was feeling more confident in ALL areas of his life, including his sex drive. Is this true? Better than Viagra?

Libido is a complex characteristic of the human male or female and is not related to just one factor. Clearly, what men think of their manhood, their attractiveness, their self-esteem, the influence of the woman in their life, directly impacts their libido. One of the important determining elements for libido has to do with a man’s emotional state and sense of well being. The second, is a man’s reaction to his hormonal influences and brain regulators that drive libido. We know that Testosterone is the most potent hormone that in determining the sex drive in men (and in women). Third, is the physical ability of a man’s penis to react to his sexual wants and needs. Penile function is another complex process and the failure of a penis to become erect, even in the motivated sexually driven male, will perpetuate (or make worse) sexual dysfunction.

With regard to your comment on the increased confidence of men who have had a hair transplant, well, this is a very common message my patients pass on to me. For example: One well known, rich, successful and happily married businessman came to me with a Class 6 (fairly bald) pattern. He had two transplant sessions totaling about 5000 grafts. He was dynamic and was known for his charismatic style in public – but there was a piece of the inner, sexual man what was influenced by his hair loss. His wife came to me a couple of years after I had finished his hair restoration process. When he told her of his decision to have a hair transplant, she was outwardly supportive, but secretly did not feel it was necessary. She told me that after her husband had his hair back, the man she married came back and her confession brought tears to my eyes. She told me that her love had never diminished as he was balding, because he was still the same man she fell in love with and married. Now she wanted me to share her joy in the decision and to thank me for my role in his restoration two years earlier.

This story should shed light on the secret inner man which is in every man. The inner man does not like aging, Balding is a reminder of the aging process that men hate. The problem for most men, however, is that the transplant route is imbued with negative connotations and men tend to be averse to the idea that their vanity is a problem for them. Facing their vanity without the support of a loving and understanding wife, can be a difficult decision for a married man. For the recently divorced man, on the other hand, hair transplantation is a common process during the post divorce period and with the change in their image (even the possibilities of a potentially painful surgery), a hair transplant is often moved to the forefront. With a change in the physical appearance that comes with a normal looking head of hair, comes a confidence and a libido to match provided the plumbing is in good condition.
