Does Thicker Diameter Hair Delay the Balding Process?

Dear Dr. Rassman
For a quite a lot of time I had been looking for information regarding hair diameter and its relation with hair loss (I know hair diameter can be used for diagnosis), my question is if thicker hair producing follicles need more time of exposure to dht to give the appearence of hair loss. In other words is thicker hair a a delayer/protective factor for baldness?

People with coarse hair may not show the reduction of hair shaft thickness that those with fine hair would, but DHT will impact the hair equally (regardless of hair character) once the genetic pattern is expressed.

Does the time of day taking finasteride make a difference?

No, I don’t believe that time of day you take the drug has anything to do with its effectiveness because the drug really works by its fixation on the hair follicle which holds for at least one week or more.

Does The SMP Scalp Micropigmentation Turn Green or Blue Over Time?

You mentioned in one of your posts that you generally use grey/black or grey/brown ink tones. I understand that they will fade over time but does the fading change the remaining pigment to a slight blue tone. This is the type of thing you see with tattoos that use black ink which generally fade to a blue tone over time. Or does the ink hold its colour integrity over time? Thanks

All pigments deposited under the skin will turn blue/ green over time. The time frame that this happens is within a week to a month (not years). And the blue I am referring to is nothing like the blue in this post, it is a black color with a tinge of blue to it.

Any claim that it does not is a marketing gimmick as the human body will react with the pigment as well as the layer of overlying skin will alter the perception of color. For example your red blood vessels will look green under your skin but the green you see is an absorption issue because these blood vessels contain red blood, yet these blood vessels don’t look red under the skin. There is actually a paper written on this topic HERE.

The green /blue that some may think of (or you may be referring to) are the old pigments or cheap brands that oxidize and actually change color dramatically. The green/ blue I’m referring to is generally not noticeable unless you have a keen sense of color. If the SMP pigment is high quality and the person applying them is experienced you should not have this issue. The best and ultimate test is to physically see a SMP patient up close in person. Don’t rely on advertisements or photos.

Does the Follicle Eventually Just Stop Producing Hair?

Hi doc,
is it true (..or partly true under certain conditions) that the follicle will go through the growth, release and snooze phases a specific amount of times and then stop to produce hair?

If so, MSM and it’s claimed increase in hairgrowth speed would actually do more harm then good in the long turn.

It is normal to lose 100 to even 200 hairs a day (though the average would be closer to 100, I’d say). As hair falls out, there are hairs that are also starting to grow. Hair may also grow in cycles and you may notice more hair falling out at different phases and seasons of the month. Hair follicle cells have three phases of growth:

  1. Growth phase (Anagen phase) which lasts anywhere from 2 to 6 years. This is the phase where your hair is actively growing at approximately 10cm per year. 85% of hair is at this phase at any given time.
  2. Transitional phase (Catagen phase) which lasts about 2 weeks. This is the phase where the hair follicle shrinks and prepares to enter the resting phase.
  3. Resting phase (Telogen phase) which lasts about 1- 6 months. This is the phase where hair does not grow but stays attached to the follicle. Some hairs are shed at this phase, but at the end the hair follicle re-enters the growth phase to start the cycle over again. 10-15% of hairs are at this phase at any given time.

Eventually, as we age, some of the hair follicles will die and stop producing hair. But keep in mind the life expectancy for a hair follicle can be over 100 years (provided that you live that long). My great grandmother had a full head of hair at 114 years of age, so clearly the hair can live longer than we do. I’ve written about this before — At What Age Does Hair Stop Growing Naturally?

Finally, there are no products or medications proven to speed up or increase hair growth. Drugs like minoxidil are thought to prolong the hair cycles and that might mean, in the long term, that hair treated with minoxidil might last more years. I would be interested to see product results on half a scalp to see if that half has faster hair growth, longer cycles, or whatever.

Does the crown respond slower than the front to drugs?

Everyone is different. For hair transplants, sometimes the crown grows slower than the front, sometimes it is the other way. For drugs like finasteride or minoxidil, again there is no rule.
There is a process called Apoptosis, the death of a hair cell in this case, is genetic and timed by the number of cycles it has in its lifetime. If your biologic clock dictates early death of some or all of the crown hairs and not the frontal hairs, then clearly, the drugs will work less well on the crown. The reverse is also true.

Does the ‘Cold Cap’ prevent hair loss in chemotherapy?

I have prescribed it for a number of family members. It is a cooling head system that keeps the blood circulation to the scalp low during chemotherapy. On the three family member I recommended using it, none of them lost all of their hair although there was some thinning on one woman with Breast Cancer Chemo, but unlike many of her friends, she kept almost all of her hair for the entire chemotherapy period. (see: https://baldingblog.com/cold-cap-is-now-fda-cleared-to-hold-on-to-ones-hair-during-chemotherapy/ and see other links: https://baldingblog.com/?s=cold+cap ). Psychologically it is a Godsend for women with breast cancer not to be reminded of their disease every time they look in the mirror and see a bald woman.

Does the Age You Start Balding Affect the Final Pattern?

Hi Doc,

Two-part question for you: Does genetics determine what age we get MPB (for example, was I destined to start losing my hair at 21), and also, how does a mans’ age at which he begins balding affect his final pattern, if at all?

Norwood 4AThe start of hair loss is mainly genetic (according to our general understanding), but recent studies suggest that diet, lifestyle and other factors such as stress, will also impact the start and rate of balding. It is believed that our final pattern is predetermined. That means if it is meant to be a Class 4A (see image at right), then the variable will be the rate of achieving that final pattern. A Class 7 will not evolve out of a Class 4A genetic pattern if the genes are not lined up that way.

Does taking testosterone cause hair loss?

I was curious if you believe in testosterone itself causing hair loss and this being raised by finasteride and dutasteride can worse things for some people? I got diagnosed with a folate deficiency, but addressing it the past two months doesn’t seem to have helped, so I’m wondering if this could be the case.

Exogenous testosterone can cause hair loss in men with the genes for hair loss and as testosterone goes up, so does the amount of DHT found in your body

Does Stress or Lack of Sleep Contribute to Gray Hair?

Hi Doc,

Is there anything (medicine or lifestyle related changes) that can be done to reverse or at least prevent greying of hair?

Does stress or inadequate sleep contribute to or accelerate greying of hair?

I can advise you to get adequate amounts of sleep to be healthy and figure out ways to reduce your stress, but that advice would not necessarily deal with your graying issue. Gray hair may be caused in whole or in part by genetics in your case.
