Does Blood Flow Cause Hair Loss?

So just a quick question Parents both have full heads of hair and only 1 great grandfather died bald. I lead a pretty sedentary lifestyle and am probably even on the obese side. Does any of this have an effect on hair? I’ve been for a couple months now and it wasn’t until today that it finally started to affect my hairline. Fullness is basically gone. Will working out help?

The scalp has a very rich blood flow. Hair loss is not caused by inadequate blood flow. Hair loss is genetic. As the hair is lost, the body diverts the blood away from the hair as the hair volume reduces. We know this because when we put hair transplants into a bald area that had reduced its blood supply, the blood supply returns proportional to the hair we put back in.

Does Better Blood Flow on Side of the Scalp that I Sleep On Lead to Thicker Hair on that Side?

After 4700 FUs one side of head is clearly thicker then the other.

Hi Doctors,

I’m curious to see if you’ve heard of this before. I had two hair transplant sessions totalling 4700 FUs in the past 2 and 1/2 years. I’ve been noticing that the hair on the right side of my head are much thicker than the ones on my left. Someone said that it is because much more blood flows to my right side, since that’s the side I sleep on. I thought this was foolish, but I’ll try anything to get the left side as thick as the right. So I started to sleep on my left side and I’m hoping this will help. Do you think it is because more hairs ont the left side are going into the rest cycle? Any suggestions?

Thank you.

I do not believe that there is any difference with respect to sleeping on one side versus the other. What I do know is that in a hair transplant, the right side often grows more hair than the left. This is related to the teams of people placing the grafts — right handed people place more efficiently on the right side of the head and the left side is often a slower process. Most technicians are right handed and prefer to work on the right side. This is an important element in the quality control of the doctor’s team.

Does being poor mean I can’t get good hair treatments?

Just say that a cure was found, I am 100000000% sure that you’ll be only able to get it done in a professional environment (like PRP), also unless its patent drops it’ll be ridiculiously expensive (I think at least 300 bucks a month at best). Richer people will be cured, having hair will be a financial statement. Us, the middle class-lower class balders will be received even worse by the population.

AS PRP doesn’t work predictably, you are not losing out. Microneedling with minoxidil works as good if not better than PRP and it is far less expensive, see here: https://baldingblog.com/go-looking-prp-used-hair-transplant-good-thing/

Does Balding Change Your Personality?

There is no doubt that personalities change with balding, and when I do a hair transplant, they often change for the better radically. I see that in many celebrities I have done. They feel that the hair transplant not only changed their appearance but changed their effectiveness in their acting careers.

Does Avodart Minimize Shock Loss Like Propecia Would?

I stopped using Propecia (Generic) approx 2 yrs. ago & switched to Avodart as Finasteride was no longer effective after 10 + yrs. of use.

What is the possibility that Avodart would be comparable to Propecia in minimizing shock loss before another transplant? Also, although you have strong reservations about this, what are the “possibilities” Avodart would have a similar effect used in conjunction with 2% ketoconazole on hair growth as propecia does?

Just wondering if you have any feedback from other physicians. Thanks again for a superior forum!!

Avodart (dutasteride) is not approved for the treatment of androgenic alopecia, but I realize some doctors and patients out there use it for that purpose anyway. The results and its effectiveness over Propecia (finasteride) are unclear, but at best, in my opinion, you get about the same result with a higher side effect potential. Did you have your hair bulk measured before you started the Avodart so that you could compare it to today, 2 years later? I’m curious to know what you saw.

As to the minimization of shock loss from Avodart… I do not know, but I would expect it will have value at preventing it, just as Propecia does.

Do women ignore bald men?

Back when I had hair girls used to flirt with me and tell me how good looking I was. Now women see the bald head and don’t give me a second glance. It’s as if their minds are seeing my head and picturing their children with me coming out bald with a Norwood 6. Before I didn’t have to say more than 3 words to get a woman interested in me, but it takes so much effort now.

Society has always discriminated against men with balding. It goes back over 2000 years when tuberculosis was running rampant producing balding men because they were sickly. That set up a connection between balding on one side with a sickly man, and a healthy vibrant hairy man on the other side. So the norm has been propelled for centuries and it is somehow ingrained in our culture. Men wore wigs or hats to hide their balding so women wouldn’t be able to tell. Met wore top hats in the late 1800 and early 1900s. Today we wear baseball caps. We are still victims of this culturally, unfortunately.

Does alcohol cause hair loss

Do you think that drinking alcohol could be a factor (if not significant factor) in male hair loss? I am a senior at a major east coast university that is known for its student body’s tendency to drink alcohol. I started to make an observation that a lot of the people that I know that have drank heavily for the past couple of years (they are now approx. age 21-23) have some degree of noticeable hair loss compared to the people who were more moderate with their drinking. I myself used to drink fairly heavily for about a year in college and ever since I slowed down I have noticed that my hair has begun to grow back thicker (perhaps because lowered my alcohol consumption) although the hair I have lost has not grown back yet, if at all Another example of this would be if you were to take a look at any major “party” fraternity at XYZ College. Of course course the older brothers are going to look more aged/mature than their younger counterparts, however in my experience I started to notice that the a decent amount of the older brothers in the major “party” frats at my school definitely show a greater degree of hair loss than some of the other same aged males at my school who were not known to go out and drink every weekend.

If alcohol can be a significant factor in hair loss at a young age is it possible that it served as a catalyst to speed up the balding process since these people may have been genetically disposed to experience hair loss at some point in their lives?

Drinking alcohol doesn’t cause hair loss but stress does and many people with genetic hair loss who drink are stressed.

Does Adderall Increase Testosterone?

Can Adderall increase testosterone in men? Thanks drs

To my knowledge, Adderall does not affect testosterone levels. Adderall is prescribed for patients with ADHD and its mechanism of action has to do with dopamine uptake.

Does a Maturing Hairline Also Decrease the Total Volume of Scalp Hair?

hi doc

i’ve got a general question about maturing hairline. while a hairline is maturing, can the total volume of scalp hair diminish? is that possible?

If the hairline and the hair that disappears reflects 2% of your total hair count, then the reduction will be 2% of your hair (total volume measurement). While it is maturing, the impact (if you do not have genetic balding) will not affect you anywhere other than the first 1/2 inch of hairline. In other words, if you’re losing hair beyond the hairline it isn’t just a mature hairline.

Does a mature hairline really exist?

It doesn’t. If you only lose “some” of your hair, doesn’t mean you won’t lose anymore. Just means your hair loss hasn’t advanced to that point yet.

Of course it exists. I have a mature hairline and had balding in my crown which I treated with a hair transplant so now I am just a normal hairy guy.
