Constant pulling back on my hair, will I develop traction alopecia?

Can you get traction aloepecia from checking your hairline. I probably pull my hair back to check my hair like 10 times a day, very infrequently it might even be for an entire hour total. Could this cause any permanent damage?

No, if you don’t pull on your hair, you will not get traction alopecia

Considering shaving my head

I am strongly considering a transplant, since I really am sad about my balding situation.

It is such a slow progression and at the moment It is only frontal part that will need transplant. I am 27 now and cannot tolerate the AR5 inhibitors (tried everything, including all different dosages). Crossing fingers for future treatments !

BUT I am afraid of the FUE scars (even with micro) if I eventually will have to shave it all off to the bare skin (if the balding continue, even on the side and back of the head). Can you share pictures of the FUE harvest area after a head has been shaven?

Most of those men who shave their heads after hair transplant either had: (1) poor or no growth, or (2) poor planning without a Personalized Master Plan and with unrealistic expectations that result. Also, if you shave your scalp very close after an FUE, you will see a lot of white dots, the scars left from the removal of the grafts which happens in 100% of FUE surgeries. FYI: any cut into the skin any place in the body will cause a visible scar.

Considering hair transplant. Would hair fibres and hairspray every day/two days for 10 years be harmful?

Inert hair fibers like Toppik do not cause harm to the hair. Hair spray does not do damage provided that when you style your hair that you don’t tug your hair as tugging on the hair can pull out the hair at its roots and in the long term cause permanent hair loss and/or hair damage

Considering a Hair Transplant and May Want to Shave My Head. Is FUE Scarless? (from Reddit)

The FUE is not scarless as it will produce some small, punctated scars. If the surgeon uses a small punch instrument, the scars will be small, but with a razor shaved head, the scars will show. We have performed SMP for patients with FUE or strip scars. Many of these people can now shave their head. I try to tell my patients that hair transplants don’t usually give back your original density, so a longer hairstyle works better than a shorter hairstyle since it will not reveal the lower density. To look at some patients who shaved their head with FUE and other scars, see here: https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/scar-covering/

Considering Future Hair Loss

i am 56/m, bald at the crown. with general thinning on the top and front. because my hair is still falling out i would expect to be compleatly bald in the norwood 6 area in 1 to 2 years. my hair is very fine. can i get a transplant that will also take into consideration my future hair loss, or will i have to repeat the process as my natural hair reduces to zero. if this is a stupid question please forgive my ignorance.

p.s. can you recommend a surgeon in the u.k. who is of your standard both ethically and medically. also i am a blue coller worker, so i would need a to get a loan, can you give me a estimate of a average price for a norward 6 transplant.

p.p.s. GREAT SITE.

At 56, it would be unlikely that you will complete your expected Class 6 pattern, because at your age, the hair loss is often very slow (almost to a stop) in most men. If you want to fill in the frontal and top areas, that would be the best place to start. The crown often takes a great deal of hair to fill in. With regard to a hair transplant surgeon in the UK, consider the physician search at ISHRS.org for a place to look and be sure to read The Truth About Cheap Hair Transplants as a buyer’s guide to selecting a doctor. Both the NHI site and my book also cover different aspects of the buyer’s challenge. Loans vary with the doctor, where some have arranged credit sources. Many of our patients put the hair transplant on a credit card.

Connection Between Early Balding and the Risk of Parkinson’s Disease

The authors of a recently published article show that a specific genetic locus was identified on Chromosome 20, which is associated with Parkinson’s disease, that is also a susceptibility locus for early-onset genetic balding. The study was conducted in 12,806 individuals of European ancestry who had early-onset genetic balding. There was a high degree of confidence in the reported statistics.

The suggestion is that individuals with early onset genetic balding have a 6 fold increase in the risk for Parkinson’s Disease (7,664 cases of Parkinson’s Disease was studied). This data was published in Public Library of Science, and you can read it here.

With the advent of wide scale genetic testing, we are now finding relationships between the genes we carry and various diseases that run in family lines. I registered on 23andMe some time ago. When you register on this site, you send saliva samples along with the registration. From this, the company compares you with an expanding database of people and their genetic make-up. Risk of disease is sent to you and as new genetic testing is developed, you can see your ever-changing risks of various diseases. What this means is that, for example, you have a higher risk of heart disease than the average person, you can take steps early in your life to mitigate that risk. I would suggest that you may find it interesting to look at the 23andMe site.

Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia and Hair Loss

I’m 32 years old/female. I have recently been diagnosed with CAH and wanted to find out if there is any chance my hair will grow back if my condition is being treated and the hormone levels (DHEA-S and 17a-OH Progesterone) return to normal levels. Does hair loss in the pubic region, eyebrows, and eyelashes also occur in patients with adrenal disorders?

The scope of hair loss varies with individuals that have CAH. If you happen to have the genes for hair loss in women, then CAH could activate the process. If you get your hormones under control, chances are that your hair loss may grow back. You might have to wait one or two hair cycles (5-12 months) to know one way of the other. Hair loss could occur anywhere on the body, including the pubic region, eyebrows, and eyelashes. See eMedicine for more information.

Confusion About Generic Propecia

Hi Dr.

This is a follow up question to the statement you just posted about generic 1mg finasteride. You mentioned a little while ago that Dr. Reddy’s lab received the right to make generic 1mg finasteride and that you called to find out when it would be available and said it may take a “couple of months” to get it out. Now you just said that the patent hasnt expired with Merck and it would take years. Im a bit confused now?

Sorry for the confusion. It was confusing for me as well. After doing more research and personally calling a Merck (makers of Propecia) representative, the story is that Propecia (finasteride 1mg) is still under patent protection. The confusion came from the FDA, which gave permission to allow generic Propecia on the market, but with patent monopoly controlled by Merck, the legality to sell it is in the hands of Merck. At least, this is how it was explained to me by Merck. If things change and generic Propecia becomes available (legally) in the US, I’ll certainly post about it here.
