Why Can’t a Class 7 Patient Get a Good Hair Transplant?

I have heard you say that hair transplants are not an option for young men under 25. If you are confident about getting good results for NW7 people, why are young men who are heading to a Class 7 pattern not good candidates?

The supply of donor hair in a Class 7 pattern is only 20% of the total original hair. Only half of it can be used. That means that 10% of the original hair will have to cover the balding area (80% of your scalp). Unless you have great donor density, the math does not work out. If you combine it with Scalp Micropigmentation, the reduction of contrast can make it work.

So, let me contradict myself a bit, as there are few of Class 7 patients who had hair transplants (https://baldingblog.com/2007/05/25/difference-between-norwood-class-7-patients-with-photos/). The first one had 10,000 grafts and a very high donor density, so his results were fairly good. The last patient had very fine hair, about 5,000 grafts, and looked good from the front. He used a comb-back which he didn’t see in the mirror.

Cannabis and finasteride may produce Erectile Dysfunction

A hair transplant doctor I know has noticed that some of her finasteride patients who started taking cannabis, has seen ED appearing. The article states: “What’s good for the goose may be bad for the gander. Specifically, marijuana use may cause erectile dysfunction in men. Of note, erectile dysfunction is the most frequent male sexual disorder.” For men on finasteride and who are using marijuana and have sexual side effects, maybe there is a link that potentiates the ED in finasteride users.

Cancer findings occur in young and younger people

The findings come from a meta-analysis of 302 clinical trials with 262,354 participants enrolled between 1994 and 2015. The median age of these participants was 6.49 years younger (P < .001) than the median age of real-world patients with the same cancers in a federal database. That’s a “substantial difference,” the authors comment. (Taken from Medscape)

Cancer and Hair Transplants

Hi Doc,
I have written to you before. For a while I have been “shopping around” for the best techniques, as well as how cost effective the available procedures are. So far by comparison, NHI has the most natural looks I’ve seen. (in the mild or moderate cases, the more severe cases are less convinceing.) However, my question is this: If you have oily skin, is this a problem for surgery or healing. Also, I was close to have the transplant surgery. I postponed further pursuit of the surgery due to possible symptoms of cancer. (Tests were negative thank God). Now if that ever were the case, I am assumeing that if you had a transplant surgery, chemotheropy would cause all hair to fall out. In conclusion, Is scarring so severe, that being bald or even desireing a haircut style cut close (military style) would bring an alarming rate of attention? I thank you in advance for answering my concerns…

To begin, I am happy to hear that the recents test for cancer were negative. No, oily scalp is not a problem for a hair transplant.

If you drive your life in fear of cancer then you have a problem that needs professional help. Chemotherapy MAY cause hair loss anywhere in the body as chemo impacts rapidly growing cells in the body. Ask yourself what drives your life. When hair is lost with transplants, it almost always returns after the the course of chemotherapy is completed. You can live in fear of what may happen and play into those fears by creating a life around “what if”. Healthy people may have a worst case scenario, but live their lives for meaning, love, happiness, family, friends, and such.

As far as your concerns about scarring, I would suggest that you research the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure. You can find more information about this here, here, and here.

Can a Zinc Deficiency Cause Hair Loss in Men?

A girl I know started losing hair and it turned out she had a zinc deficiency. She takes tablets for it now and says its slowed down her hair loss. She says that it’s a form of alopecia that she has.

Yes, and if you know that you have a Zinc deficiency, then Zinc supplements will work. This is very rare in an American Diet.

Can Zinc Cause Hair Loss From Increased Testosterone?

I get oily skin and increased libido while on zinc 50mg/day. As Zinc increases testosterone so I fear that it may increase the progression rate of my baldness. Considering that I’m also on Finasteride, will the use of zinc negatively affect my hair?

zinc

The short answer to your question is that zinc does not necessarily negatively affect hair loss. Some studies show zinc supplements increase testosterone levels.
There are other studies that show zinc supplements do NOT affect testosterone levels.

For a normal healthy individual with genetic male pattern balding (MPB) taking over the counter supplements such as zinc would not negatively or positively affect their hair loss. It is always a good idea to follow up with your doctor if you have concerns.

Can You Use Rogaine for African American Hair

I am an African American woman and have braided hair…is it safe to use Rogaine on my scalp???

If you are losing hair, it would be advisable to find the cause for the hair loss before seeking treatment. Rogaine is a medication to grow hair. It does not matter if you are African American, a woman, or have braided hair. If you are concerned about hair loss, treatment options, or side effects associated with medications, please see a doctor.

Can You Use Leg or Body Hair for Eyebrow Transplants?

Can You Use Leg or Body Hair for Eyebrow Transplants? I understand that if you use head hair for eyebrow transplants, the hair will keep growing longer than the other hairs on the eyebrow and I don’t like cutting my eyebrows.

leg-hair

Leg hair has a different hair cycle than head hair. Some body hair has 70% of its life cycle in telogen (sleep) and does not appear on the recipient area transplanted therefore but 30% of the time. So a successful eyebrow transplant with body hair, will keep to its growth cycle. It will disappoint the recipient as only about 70% of the hair will grow at any one time, even if it was successfully transplanted. There is no way to stop head hair moved into the eyebrow from growing. I generally joke to my patients that they can grow a pony tail from an eyebrow transplant. So basically, you will have to cut these hairs twice a week or so, and when you cut them, they must be cut on an angle making the tip look sharp.
