Can grafts fail to grow and if so, why?

The three most common causes of graft failures includes (1) exposure to air for more than 15 seconds when placing the grafts or when preparing the grafts, (2) rough handling of the grafts during placement, (3) a recipient site that is too tight. These problems most frequently arise when the surgical team is sloppy, inexperience, poorly supervised, has no quality control systems in place implemented by the surgeon.

Can I Go Directly to the Beach After a Hair Transplant?

Sun exposure directly on the grafts after any hair transplant is never a good idea. UV light negatively impacts healing and can burn the skin edge of the grafts. People often forget that these grafts, which are taken from the back of the head, have never been exposed to the sun for your entire life. You should wear a hat, and even after it has healed, you should use UV protection.

When Can I Go Back and Use My Turban After the FUE Is Done?

You should wait until all of the crusting (scabs) are off and the recipient site has healed before using your turban.

If I were your doctor, there would be no crusts because we give our patients hair washes after surgery, so you would be cleared to use a Turban in 10 days without any crusting.

When can I get a haircut after my FUE

How long after am I able to trim the implanted section so that the transplant does not look noticeable. I also have redness in the recipient area, why is that?

Most of my patients can trim their hair or get a hair cut in 2 weeks after an FUE. The presence of redness on the skin is either infection or just a histamine reaction in your skin. Your doctor can tell you which it is.

Can genetic hair loss start and stop?

You say it stops ” when you achieve your genetic hair loss pattern”. It is possible for the hair loss to happen in quantum jumps. Where a person reaches lets say 50% of their genetic pattern in one year and then the hair loss all of sudden pauses then starts up again after 5 years? I have had a NW4 for 5 years and my dad is at NW5/6. I haven’t had much balding since…

Genetec hair loss can go in phases, some phases with no hair loss and some phases with accelerated hair loss. Usually, genetic hair loss is slowly progressive. Looking to your family and identifying someone who you might be taking after, will help knowing where your hair loss is going

Can genetic hair loss reverse?

I’ve noticed some hair loss at the temples when I was about 17/18 and 3 years later it’s basically at the same level. Haven’t noticed thinning, hair at crown/on top is still fine. Is it possible for someone to lose a little bit of hair and for the balding to then stop for a (longer) period of time? Or will you always continue to lose hair, albeit it being at a slower rate? Cause if there is a chance my hair stays the way it is right now, I might be interested in a HT with +/-650 grafts to fix my hairline at the temples.

Bonus question: My hair at my temples was blonde, born that way. Rest of the head had brown hair. Is there any chance that that blonde hair might have been more easier affected by hair loss? Or just a coincidence?

Genetic balding is a progressive process that may stop when you achieve your inherited hair loss pattern but it can be reversed in younger men, sometimes for years but sooner or later a person with genetic balding will reach his final inherited pattern of balding. The different hair colors have nothing to do with what is happening to you.

Can Folliculitis Cause Hair Loss?

Hello Doctor!

I have a question about hair loss. I have been diagnosed with “folliculitis”. I’ve seen several dermatologists, and none has helped. Moreover, I am losing my hair. Can folliculitis cause hair loss? Is there any drug that can help me?

Thank you very much.

Folliculitis is an infection of your hair follicles. It can clear up on its own or your dermatologist can prescribe you medications to treat it. You shouldn’t lose hair from folliculitis unless it is chronically infected. Keep in mind though, the most common cause of hair loss in men is genetic hair loss.

Can Finasteride Thicken Hair, But Not Grow New Ones?

Hi,

I have read quite a few times individual people have said finasteride thickened their hair up but they did not actually grow new hairs. How can the hair thicken up without new hair growth. Does this mean the hair root expanded and got thicker making the hair on our head appear thicker or fatter?

Thank you.

Propecia (finasteride) generally thickens the miniaturized hairs, as well as grow new ones. For men that see thicker hair but no growth, there is probably some new growth that just isn’t being noticed.

Seeing results could also have to do with the age of the patient and the degree of hair loss they have. In general, the older you are, the less effective the drug will be. If you have early hair loss, the medication helps to reverse miniaturization (thus thickening the hair).

Can Finasteride Stop Further Hairline Recession?

I’m aware that fin isn’t as effective on thickening hairs at the hairline, but is it effective at halting further recession, as it is at stopping general thinning?

Finasteride (Propecia) may halt further hairline recession, but hairline recession is usually not reversed with this drug. It’s also usually not a permanent phenomenon, so over time you can expect more hairline recession even if it stops the recession initially.

In other words, even if you take Propecia every day without missing a step and have good results, you could eventually start seeing the loss start again. It’s not a hair loss cure, though some patients have been on the medication for over a decade while still seeing good results.
