2 Weeks After Using Hair Dye, My Hair Is Falling Out!

I’m a 28 year old female who has always had very long, thick and strong hair. I’ve dyed it for YEARS. Now, suddenly, my hair is falling out and baldness is not found on the woman’s side of my family. After I brush and after I wash I can literally pull out the hair by the handful. It’s scaring me to death. I dyed my hair about 5 weeks ago, and 3 weeks ago is when I began to notice this. Could it be connected? My scalp didn’t feel burned or hurt, so origially didn’t think it could be related to the coloring. However, I at a loss and I’m loosing my cool. Please help! Thanks so much.

It is normal to lose 100 hairs a day. You might consider stopping the hair coloring process to try to surround what is happening. That being said, I am sure you are noticing more hair falling out than what you are used to. It may be a phase or it may be a sign of a medical illness or a genetic balding process. Genetic balding does not necessary mean that your mother or father were balding. Hair loss in women can sometimes be caused by underlying medical conditions, so it is important for you to be evaluated by your own physician before we proceed. If clinically appropriate, the following disease processes should be considered: anemia, thyroid disease, connective tissue disease, gynecological conditions and emotional stress. It is also important to review the use of medications that can cause hair loss, such as oral contraceptives, beta-blockers, Vitamin A, thyroid drugs, coumadin and prednisone. The following laboratory tests are often useful if underlying problems are suspected: Estradiol, FSH, LH, SHBG, Prolactin, T4, TSH, ANA, Iron, TIBC, Ferritin, Free and Total Testosterone. You may benefit from a miniaturization study to examine your hair under a hair densitometer to document the health of your hair.

2 Weeks After My Hair Transplant, I See The Grafts Growing

Hello Doctor,
I have undergone HT 2 weeks back with 2 sessions of a total of 5000 grafts done. Till date, I don’t see a single transplanted hair being fallen out. Instead, I see them growing in length. Is this something to be worried?

I’m wondering why would you worry if you are seeing something positive like growth? You must have had a great donor density to get out 5,000 grafts in two sessions.

In general, most people see what appears to be graft growth in the first 2-3 weeks (it is actually the hair in the graft being pushed out of the scalp). As this is actually the shedding process of the hair which is going into telogen, most of the transplanted hairs will fall out in one month. Either way, follow up with your doctor as he/she can better assess your post operative course and progress.

2 Weeks After My 2800+ Graft Surgery, I Had Massive Shock Loss

hi, two weeks after a surgery with dr. rahal of 2846 grafts (888 1 hair, 1526 2-hairs, 429 3-hairs, and 3 4-hairs), i experienced a massive shock loss. it has been one month post surgery and i am very worried about even going to my original look, which at this point i would be happy with. i only take minoxidil, because of the side effects of finasteride.

do you see a lot of this shock loss from the pics as being temporary, because although i am thinning, i am not an entirely diffuse thinner, but lost everything. at this point would total of the 5239 hairs even be enough to fill in what i have lost? i should also note that the hairs that are remaining are ones from a previous surgery with ziering that was supposed to be around 2300 grafts, but i am not even entirely sure about his work.

thank you so much for your help and suggestions, greatly appreciated!

It is difficult to make many comments about your exact situation, because the before picture and the change in your hair length are confusing your situation. I will assume that you are young (under 30 years old). Were you afraid of possible side effects from finasteride, or did you actually experience them? Shock loss is common in young men after a hair transplant, unless the young man is protected with Propecia (finasteride). Prior to the appearance of this drug on the market, shock loss was a common problem for hair transplant surgeons. Since the use of finasteride, this type of report is relatively uncommon.

Shock loss usually appears in the first three months after a surgery, when it happens. I do not believe that the size (# of grafts) is related to the shock loss, as a hair transplant of any size can do it. Shock loss reflects your genetic timelines and often accelerates the timelines 1-3 years.

These are the remnants of the scabs (crusts) that you did not wash off. They are now filling up with water and are elevated. They should easily wash off with a good shampoo and gentle rubbing with your fingertips. I never see this problem in our patients because we wash off the crusts the day of and the day after the surgery so that they never form.

2 months on finasteride (photo)

Very nice. If you look carefully, you can see hairs that are about 1/2 inch in length suggesting that there is one month growth in them. This means that you are very sensitive to finasteride in a good way.

This young man is an excellent finasteride responder and should continue on this drug for the rest of his life. If he stops it, he will lose all that he gained.

This is an amazing response to finasteride and minoxidil in just 2 months suggesting that the stem cells were responsive to the 5 alpha reeducate blockade from finasteride.

So many men want to see benefits if they take finasteride and show it off, but they are not photographers and differences in views (position) and lighting make it impossible to see what they think they are seeing

2 months finasteride, minoxidil & microneedling

In just two months, this young man stimulated early hair growth that can only get better over time. It is always amazing how quickly microneedling accelerates the growth process. Of course, we never would know if it would have grow without the microneedling, but with the huge number of men who presented these results, one has to believe that the three approaches (finasteride, minoxidil and microneedling) are intertwined.
