14 weeks on finasteride (photo)

Some nice early new hair can be seen in the crown area with more filling present. Give it more time and the picture show will become more and more evident

14 weeks minoxidil, microneedling and finasteride (photo)

Hair length alone can not produce such a dramatic effect in this 27 year old male. Great result. The frontal hairline is less sensitive to these treatments in this man. You would have to keep up the combined minoxidil and finasteride treatment after the hair transplant to maintain the gains you made in the top and crown of your head. Despite this, you should be congratulated for this spectacular turn around.

1/4 Tablet of Proscar with Breakfast

Dr Rassman
If i take 1/4 proscar with breakfast will it get absorbed in my blood streem or is the tablet just too small after it is mixed with food? Do you think it is better to take it on a empty stomach? Thanks

I’ve often said that in my opinion, it is best to take it before breakfast. I generally think that it is best taken on an empty stomach although it probably makes no difference on the absorption issue.

Some nice subtle results. Stay the course. The impact in the crown is heading in the right direction, but the frontal area may be just the result of longer hair. Finasteride doesn’t usually work well on the frontal hairline.

13 Year Old’s Crown Hair is Shorter Than the Rest of the Scalp

the hair in my crown area is short, not bald but shorter than the rest of my hair. everything else is fine. im only 13 and i dont want to be bald, especially at this age.

is there something wrong with me? and if there is how can i fix it?

I have yet to see a healthy 13 year old bald young man, but I can’t say if there’s something wrong with you. We haven’t established whether what you’re seeing is actually even hair loss. Perhaps you had a bad hair cut? Sometimes if you look at yourself in the mirror or woke up from sleep with bed-hair, your crown area can look thin. This does not mean you are balding. I’d give it some time and let the hair on your crown grow longer.

You should see a doctor for a mapping of your scalp and hopefully the examination will not show miniaturization in the crown. Get your parents involved and let them know what you’re going through. It could just be that you’re looking for something that isn’t there.

13 Year Old Getting White Hairs

Hi. I’m 13 years old and i’ve been having a lot of white hairs. about 5-10. I’m not sure if its because of stress. but i’ve only started to notice when i was about 11-12. Do you think it’s maybe generic or something on the lines of that? because my dad thinks i have an illness…

Getting white hair at an early age does not mean you have an illness. Some people will see their hair turn white or gray at a very early age. It is genetics. In very rare instances, if there are gray hairs in a patch it can sometimes signify a rare genetic disease such as Waardenburg Syndrome, but you are not describing that problem.

12.5% Minoxidil?

Hello. I recently came across a website claiming to sell Minoxidil 12.5% solution. Do you know if this is legit? I haven’t heard of the FDA approving such a solution, and if it is available on this one particular site, why isn’t it available at major drug/retail stores? Also, same question for 5% minoxidil solution w/out propylene glycol (which irritates my scalp)also “allegedly” available at this site. I just don’t want to get scammed if I do decide to purchase either of the above products. Thanks a lot for your time and information.

Note: I can’t really answer your question, as I have not researched the FDA issues and am just pulling from my general knowledge on the laws by which I practice under. That being said, I’m willing to take a stab at it…

Doctors have the ‘power’ to mix up medications for their patients under many state laws. These do not have to be FDA approved because they are not bottled and sold to the public. The FDA does not get into protecting one patient from one doctor, just lots of people from medications. The doctor should generally use medications that are safe and effective and if one doctor is producing 12.5% minoxidil, I would suggest that this doctor has special knowledge on the safety and effectiveness of this drug. Higher and higher doses of minoxidil can drop blood pressure, so it is not without risk when and if it is used. The same applies to the use of propylene glycol in the mix.

A couple years ago, I had a reader write in with a question about 15% minoxidil he could buy from his doctor, so apparently that is also available in some places. I don’t concoct my own minoxidil mixtures, so I’m not unfortunately not the most knowledgeable about this.

12 Year Old Has Alopecia — Is a Hair Transplant Possible?

Hello Dr.

I hope you answer my question. My 12 yrs. old daughter has been diagnosed with Androgenetic Alopecia at UCSF. Her hair has been thinning in the front and at the temples. We have been using the 2% Rogain for 3 weeks, as recommended by her Dermatologist. The hair in the back of her head seems normal. CBC, TSH, Iron, ANA were normal.Ferririn was 18, a bit below normal.

This is starting to affect her emotionally.

Is it too soon to think about hair transplant? should we wait until she is 18 or more? Please let me know.

Thank you for your time

It is extremely rare or unheard of for a 12 year old female to have androgenic alopecia. Androgenic alopecia (AGA) generally affects men past their puberty who are genetically susceptible to the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Does your daughter have hormonal irregularities? You need a good dermatologist to make an evaluation of her and I am not saying that the docs at UCSF are not good doctors, but a second opinion may have value. There are other forms of Alopecia and considering her age, I would want to explore all possibilities.
