Lost jobSorry to hear about losing your job and the stress that goes with it. There’s not much I can tell you about your hair loss though, because there’s not enough info available to me to give much help. It’s almost like calling an auto mechanic and saying, “My car is having problems. How much would it cost to fix it?”

In the great majority of men, hair loss is caused by genetics. Stress can exacerbate that loss. The textural change in your hair could be the hairs miniaturizing, but I don’t know what you’re feeling and I’ve not examined your scalp myself. The hat you’re wearing isn’t the cause… I know that much.

If you’re concerned about your hair, see a doctor. If there’s no free clinic in your area, try a hair transplant doctor that offers a free consultation (they’ll know hair loss). Check ISHRS.org for a hair doc in your area, but please note that not all doctors offer free consultations, so be sure to ask when setting up your appointment.

Hair Loss InformationIn the News – Austria Destroys Fake Hair Loss Drugs – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

AustriaAustrian authorities say they have destroyed 22,324 fake medications seized by customs officials over the past few months.

The Finance Ministry says the phoney products were sold online and mailed to customers in Austria from countries including China and India. Popular counterfeits included those billed as treatments for impotence and for hair loss.

This is bad news for those of you that wanted to purchase fake drugs online.

Keep news items like this in mind when you’re buying prescription drugs via the web without a doctor’s prescription. Fake Viagra and Propecia are out there… and although Austria has gotten rid of some of it, there’s plenty more counterfeit medication still floating around.

Hair Loss InformationPhytocyane – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am 23, female, and have been losing quite a bit of hair the past few months likely due to stress. My middle part became noticeably wider and my scalp pretty visible. I began using Phytocyane treatment for the hair loss (it is for hair loss due to stress, hormones, pregnancy, fatigue), which consists of shampoo, and 12 serum ampules to be applied to the scalp 3 times a week.

Once I began a week ago I noticed over 2x as much hair loss than before treatment, so about 100 strands in and after the shower compared to about 40 before treatment I asked Phyto if this was normal and of course they replied that it’s normal to lose more hair in the beginning of the treatment as it is cleaning out the pores and any dead hair caught in the scalp will be released. I feel they are supposed to say this to encourage you to continue to use their products, but I want to know whether this is likely true. I’ve read a lot of reviews and most people had experienced an immediate decrease in hair loss. It’s scaring me to lose this much hair. What is your opinion?

Thank you so much.

PhytocyanePhytocyane’s main ingredient appears to be grapeseed extract, which is presently being pushed for a variety of medical problems. In my opinion, you are wasting your money and hopes on a product that cannot deliver. It is in a nice packaging and they have a nice website to look credible, but in the end it is just an expensive lotion (among the other products in their line).

It’s probably good for your hair, but certainly will not regrow it. I see nothing listed in the ingredients that is a proven hair loss treatment. There are no regulatory agencies to police and validate these claims and since it is a free economy, someone is getting rich!

Sometimes you just need to go with your gut, and if you’re losing even more hair since starting these products and the online reviews don’t seem credible anymore, your answer should be obvious. It sounds like you’re asking me to vouch for this product line, which is something I won’t do. For women, there’s unfortunately only one FDA approved hair loss treatment (minoxidil), and if you see hair loss following pregnancy and a bout of stress, your hair could even regrow on its own in time.

I Have Frizzy Hair and Think I’d Be a Good Candidate for Surgery – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Male, 32. My hair has been thinning quite a bit in the front temple region and frontal area in general. Back region is fine. When I look at before and after pictures of hair transplants some I think…wow that is great….others I think I can’t believe he paid thousands of dollars for that. I have frizzy wavy hair and it doesn’t take much for it to look full with its color and texture.

My question is would it be possible for a surgeon to look and comb through my hair(which is pretty thin) now and see whether he thinks he may be able could duplicate this? I am happy with it now but much worse and I might consider HT. Its very thin but I’m happy with it now. I think I would have really good hair for a transplant because of the texture of my hair. Obviously there are other factors though.

Results do vary between patients (hair character, color, density) and surgeons (experience, technical staff), but if you have frizzy hair I’d believe you could have some full looking results. It’s not really possible at this stage to tell since I haven’t even seen you. Meet with a hair transplant doc and see what he/she thinks about your candidacy. Generally speaking though, people with wavy or curly hair will be able to achieve thicker looking results than a patient with fine hair.

Are you treating your hair loss right now? Propecia or even Rogaine could help to maintain the hair you’ve got now if you’re happy with that.

Does the Recipient Site Have White Marks Around the Grafts? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman,

I have a question about scars after one has healed from surgery. Mainly the recipient transplanted sites. I know a doctor will puncture holes to put the grafts in. And my guess is that these holes will eventually have some form of scarring. From your past experience how visible are these scars if one shaves his head, transplanted area not donor area. Will there be tiny white spots on the transplanted area with little holes from the punctures?

My second question relates to FUE mainly from thick coarse arm hair to a missing patch in my lip area. From your experience how is the scaring like on the arm? Since a doctor would removing the hairs on the arm out with FUE. Would the arm area scar less than using FUE hair from the scalp? Let me know, since I am considering using hair from this area. Thanks

Third question, I noticed scars from a hair transplant are usually white. How well does this blend in for asians, from your experience? I am asian with very pale skin.

Thanks!

The recipient sites are made with slits which heal very well and leave no visible scar in most people. The donor area does have whitish scars that can be seen on close inspection if the head was shaved, rarely with the hair long.

I would use scalp hair though, not arm hair for your lip area (I assume you mean moustache). On the arm, I imagine the scarring would be more evident with less hair to cover it.

Does Hairline Regrowth from Propecia Depend on the Miniaturization? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman,

I am a 26 year old man and I started Propecia about 1 month ago. I have a fair amount miniturazation in the frontal hairline Norwood 2&3 area. Does the chance of reversal in this area depend on how far along the minitauraztion has progressed? Is my age optimal for beginning treatment with Finasteride?

Block Quote

Propecia rarely reverses frontal hair loss, though it may happen on occasion for certain men. I have no idea how to determine before starting the medication if it’ll work to regrow in the frontal hairline for a specific patient. This rare regrowth is often not related to the degree of miniaturization.

The optimal age for starting treatment would be when early hair loss starts… and it sounds like that’s the case for you.

I Want a Hair Transplant Now So I Can Start College with Hair! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr. Rassman and staff. I am 19 years old and Just graduated high school and am all of a sudden noticing all my hair is turning baby fine. People are noticing that my hair is thinning on top but I still have quite a bit of hair. Hair loss runs in my family so I am probably going to be bald eventually but I didn’t think it would start this early! This is devastating to my self esteem and I just want to go to college with hair!

Some people say that my hair has always been this thin but I know it hasn’t. It can’t be normal to see scalp on the top of my head vertex area. Is it too early to get a hair transplant at my age before I go bald so no one will notice and I can get my hair thick again?

Block Quote

BelushiIf you’ve got early hair loss, that is when medication like Propecia (finasteride 1mg) works best. You might be able to take a pill each day and see better results than you could from a hair transplant surgery. The medication can stop the loss from progressing and possibly regrow hair. Besides, no surgeon should perform a transplant on a teenager with early hair loss like you describe. If you find a doctor that wants to rush you into cosmetic surgery at 19 years old with early hair loss, he’s just looking at you as a revenue source, not as a patient.

Hair loss is progressive, so if you had surgery today (hypothetically) you could end up continuing to lose hair around the transplants. You’d be doing yourself no favors in that case, because it would be a very short-term solution to a long-term problem.

Talk to a doctor about getting on Propecia (it is a prescription medication). That should be your first step… not surgery.

Combover Madness! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Saw this photo gallery someone put together of hilarious combovers. Thought you might like it too.

ComboverIt is important to understand that these hair styles evolve over years. I don’t think anyone just goes “Well, today is the day I finally cover up this bald head with some long hair from the side!”

This look starts when the hair loss is in the earliest stages and the changes brought about by these styles are barely seen. As the process of balding takes its toll and the balding pattern progresses, the combover becomes more evident until it’s an embarrassment for family and friends.

Those who produce these crazy styles never see them, practicing denial on a daily basis. What always amazed me was the wives, children and close friends never seemed to address the ridiculous appearance of the style with those who have them.

Hair Regrew from Chemo But It’s Still Falling Out at a Normal Rate – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Ive read a hair has a life of around 5 years, ive recently lost my hair due to chemo and it has now regrown so in theory no hair should fall for 5 years? But in actual fact my hair is falling at a normal rate. Can you explain this? Thanks

Block Quote

Chemo drugsThe average hair cycle is 3 years and the average person loses 100 hairs per day, which adds up to about the total hair population on an average head (100,000 hairs).

When hair growth starts after chemo, the point in the cycle may pick up at the point in the cycle that the chemo did its damage, so the hair that grows will be in many phases of the hair cycle. That means the daily loss will be equal to the daily regrowth once all of the hair has returned.
