Miniaturization Tests Show Propecia and Minoxidil Didn’t Work for Me – Balding Blog

I have been to every doctor in my country, untill i found one that does hair miniturization test. He took a test of my hair and said i have miniturization of 17% so he prescribed me to propecia. 1 year passed and back then I had 87% hair density and now i only have 69%. He said propecia just dosent work on me.

Now I have for the past 2 years an itch wiv acne on my scalp which no remedy was able to fix. Also I took blood tests which show I have copper deficancy although i eat alot of meat and food. Im 22 years old and my family have no sign of baldness besides my dad who started thinning in his mid 30s. This is the most details i could give you from you without looking at my head directly. Also I did take minoxidil for a year and it didnt help also, my balding does look genetic because my hair is thinning on my front sides, although my hairline is still there.

Thanks so much for listening and i hope this time you will be able to help me, because I dont know what else to do, my only last option is to fly and meet you but im a student and dont have much money. Thanks again

17% miniaturization may be within normal limits. Something is wrong here. I can’t believe that the medical community is unable to help you with a diagnosis — which is exactly what you need. The numbers you are supplying me make to sense to me. You need to have a doctor who explains what is going on with you in a logical way. Perhaps you should look into the new HairDX test for finasteride response.

Diet and vitamins are good, of course, but you have a series of questions which may or may not be related. I need good scientific baselines to determine what is going on and I can not get this over the Internet. Pay me a visit and I will be happy to help you if I can. I’m located in the US, so I’m sure there is someone closer. Try the physician search at the ISHRS for a doctor in your area.

Questioning the HairDX Finasteride Test – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Good day Dr.,

I’m just riddled with questions regarding this new HairDX test and although it’s brand new, I was wondering if you could help me clear up at least one. How accurate do they boast this test to be? They say: “Scientists discovered that among men that had the best response to Finasteride approximately 70% had a CAG score below 22 while among men that had a subtle response to Finasteride approximately 70% had a CAG score above 22″

Does that mean that even if someone has a score above 22, there’s still a chance at having a best response? I mean, say the score comes back above 22… is that the end of hope or is there still a chance the pill could work? And if someone scores below 22, does that mean it’s a slam dunk that it’ll work for them?

Thanks again for the great site.

HairDXYou do not need the HairDX test to find out if you have a balding gene if you already show miniaturization and/or balding. The CAG repeat test, however, does suggest how sensitive you will be to a drug like finasteride. This may have value in establishing expectations for finasteride, but any benefit of finasteride is better than none. I’m not completely familiar with the HairDX tests yet, as I’ve not used them, so I can’t give you specifics on what their descriptions mean.

If you believe you are balding without much physical evidence of balding (even after a miniaturization test), I would not recommend Propecia to you even if you test positive from the HairDX finasteride test, as we bald at different ages and although you may be positive for the genes for hair loss, if you are not yet losing hair, no treatment is needed until it starts.

Are My Hair Treatments Causing High Cholesterol? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi there Dr I have been taking Finastride, saw palmetto and rogaine. I need to know if any of these products cause high cholesterole or are damaging for the body in the long term.

I can not state anything about saw palmetto with any degree of certainty (I don’t recommend it), but Rogaine and finasteride are safe and are not known to cause high cholesterol.

Hair Loss Information » Platelet Rich Plasma to Treat Hair Loss? – Balding Blog

i have a question recently i have come in contact with this dr and i would like to know what you think about this new advance treatment.. http://doctorgreco.blogspot.com/

Aside from contributing to advertising the aforementioned site, my opinion are as follows…

The use of platelet rich plasma treatment, to my knowledge, is not FDA approved. Just making claims of hair growth would be a medical claim violation with the FDA. Publishing his results in the Hair Transplant Forum (which is not a peer reviewed journal) is not an endorsement of reputable editors in the academic community, so although it is a sharing forum format, it does not bring any credibility to his research. I would suspect that the claims in the website would be subject to actions by both the FDA (a few isolated cases are not an approved study) and the medical board in the state where the doctors who tried the treatment would be regulated. I am among the first to embrace new technologies, but I want to see science which shows safety and effectiveness… not hype. Human experimentation requires that special approvals be obtained through a hospital type facility under an institutional review board (IRB). What we are seeing on Dr. Greco’s site is not that!

Will Testosterone Shots Make Me Lose Hair? – Balding Blog

If I start Testosterone shots and start to lose my hair will the hair loss stop if I stop the shots?

First of all I do not know why you are receiving testosterone shots. I would discuss all its negative side effects (including hair loss, liver damage, etc) with your doctor.

If you have the gene for androgenic balding, testosterone will increase the balding rate and possibly even continue on if you stop the testosterone therapy. If you do not have the balding gene, your hair should be safe with increasing amounts of testosterone, but your body may decay.

Hair Loss InformationA&G Hair Complex – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman what is your personal opinion on the product on this website.

Also, I am 24 years old, just got 500 grafts to fix receding on my sides and thinking about starting minoxidil to maybe thicken the rest of my hair? If I start with generic minoxidil and then switch to rogaine foam or vice versa does that have any negative effect? Also, does the drug work on the newly transplanted hair? I know these hairs are permanent, but is it at all possible to thicken that area up? Or is it as if that area is still bald and has little to no effect on a transplanted area. Thanks so much.

I looked at the A & G Hair Complex product’s website and I am not impressed at all. For starters, there are photography problems (it appears to be one patient, small photos, and no information about what other treatments were being used at the time). Plus, there is no science here to support their claims based on the ingredients they list. I wonder if the FDA was aware of the claims made, would this product still be on the market? From what little information is available, it seems that this is a once a year treatment for $200 (or is it a once a lifetime treatment?). They include a bar graph that is apparently from a study — but who conducted the study, where was it published, and how long was the study? It reeks of snake oil, and as a skeptic, you can assume where I’d file this product under.

Switching minoxidil from generic to foam or vice versa will not hurt you. Minoxidil does not work on transplanted hair at any point in time. If you had a good hair transplant with enough grafts to make a difference and used a respectable doctor, then you should get value from it to make a difference.

Hair is Growing in Different Directions on Each Side of My Head – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

hello,
on one side of my head the hair grows normally downwards to form a sideburn but on the other side my hair grows sidewards towards the back of my head. This starts from my facial area and continues in a sidewards movement to an inch above my ear. have you come across such an odd pattern before and is there anything i can do about it? I have put a link up to Hairfinder where i posted a message and a sketch about my problem. http://www.hairfinder.com/hair2/follicledirection.htm

Thanks

Everybody is different. Yes I have come across men and women with hairs growing in different directions, though the facial hair growth is generally found in my male patients. It is genetic, so thank your mom or dad for passing that on to you. There’s really nothing you can do except try conditioning your hair (even facial hair).

My Doctor Diagnosed Me with MPB Right Away – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hey Doctor Rassman, I have a question regarding early MPB. I’m 19 years old and my hair recently started thinning at the hairline and my temples have very slightly receded. It’s not at a stage where the untrained eye would notice, and my friends who I’ve pointed it out to think I’m crazy, to give you a picture of how early it is right now. But my dermatologist diagnosed it as early stage MPB right away when I asked her about it and she prescribed me propecia. So my question is:

Does thinning/receding at such an early age usually indicate a more serious case of balding? Does it generally mean more aggressive balding as well as a eventual higher NW# pattern? I know it can all be so very random sometimes, but I’m just wondering what the average case comparable to mine usually ends up at, if there is such a thing.

Starting age of your hair loss doesn’t indicate degree of future balding. You could start early and get to your pattern quickly… then stop losing hair. It’s different for each person, obviously.

Ookisa – Japanese Hair Formula – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Doc,

I just ran across this product on the Web and was wondering if you would give your thoughts. Is this just another form a snake oil or do you think it’s possible to get the type of results they claim? OOKISA.com

Thanks!

I wouldn’t say it is snake oil, because I haven’t seen any ridiculous claims on the Ookisa site about regrowing 100% of your hair (like I see with far too many products out there). Those are the snake oils, in my book. This Ookisa just looks like a shampoo and conditioner combo that promotes volumizing. It looks like hair repair, like for detangling and giving it more shine. There’s a bunch of products out there that anyone can get at a salon or pharmacy.

I found a press release from the company that states their products are a “fusion of Eastern extracts and Western science by utilizing a highly refined variety of anti-oxidants, bioflavonoids, amino acids, vitamins and minerals”. You can read the rest here.
